In the 70s we had a visitor at a friend's place with a warrant to search for a TV set. He barged into the living room, where about 20 of us 'motorcyclists' were sleeping off last night's revelries. He left and came back with a policeman and they searched the house to no avail because he'd bought a TV set at the local store as a birthday present for his brother. The policeman did seem a little bit bemused... :D

A funny guy from my 70's childhood. Sadly died on stage on live TV. He was doing a live-broadcast show when at the end, he collapsed. The audience laughed, thought it was part of his act but after the commercial break was the news with the breaking story he'd died.

Great comedy often in which Tommy deliberately self-deprecates himself. Even his purposely-failed tricks were difficult to perform. In the 1960s and 70s, our family would sit down in the living room when his show came on. As kids and adults we all laughed when he came on the screen, and he hadn't actually done anything.

I used to watch these roasts all the time. It's really saddens me to realize that almost all the people who appeared on them are gone. RIP to all. They gave us some of the best humor on tv.

Alf Garnet was racist against everyone, that's why he was so popular. He would rant about the Government as much as anything else. You must understand at that time he was voicing what many people felt but would not say. In later series his racism was cut out for the most part or at least greatly subdued.

He explained once that his act was a guy who has too much to drink and is trying hard to be sober. Hilarious!.

Yes, it's racist but I like the way they always made him look like an idiot for his views. It meant that people started to laugh at the alf garnets they saw around them.
