I am Carlos Gonzalez and I document the aesthetics and stories of vintage and struggling retail environments. Some of them still exist, some are fading and some have disappeared.

No mention of Centerpoint Mall?? 😂
Thats waz home town thank u so much
Who remembers Rocs?
I member ! You member ? 🍇
Borin in Ventura in 1999 and I would go to the Esplanade a lot when I was little, mainly for B.J.'s and the now defunct Borders. I went a long time without knowing it used to be a shopping mall.
Oxnard eventually had its revenge on Pacific View when the Collection opened. 😎
I enjoyed the video
Hey when T.O. Opened we drove all the way from Oxnard
The current “Esplanade Shopping Center” is the perfect example of why I hate minimalism. Every modern store/restaurant/mall now just looks like another corporate building.
A bunch of us military guys went up to Toons one night in '94 or 95. Epic.
I lived in Oxnard (at hollywood beach) in the 80s/early 90s and remember both the mall and that welcome to Oxnard sign (and that shopping center)
The Cactus Club started way before 1988, fyi...
I remember all things you’ve talked about bro
What happened to the old Blue Light Dance Club & Bar in San Jose, Ca ? They played oldies music from the 50s & 60s back in the 1980s
As a kid my parents wouldn't let us go to the Esplanade, because if the crime reports, especially at the movies.
😐?🎄2001, Phoenix Arizona
Bunch of gang violence in the 90s
I use to work at Video Concepts and the Att booth and would always have lunch at Yolies now it's just a cheap strip mall with less than half of the employees
This is so great thanks for this 👍🏼
I moved in 1999 man I miss Oxnard
The fact that we use to dress up for the clubs is insane to me. Seems like such a relic of the past now
It was definitely a different era. We followed the club promo mantra “dress to impress.” And many clubs wouldn’t let you in unless you had a collared shirt and dress shoes.
Awesome video !! ....and thankyou so very much Carlos !!
They should bring some of the kmarts back😂❤
If they did like a 90s retro pop-up, that would be cool! Or a Kmart museum. But I’m not holding my breath 😂 I just found out there’s only 2 left in the U.S.
Thanks for uploading this dawg, I was born in the late 2000’s and I’ve always wondered about the malls in Oxnard, never knew the Esplanade was a huge mall now it’s a passing site before the Collection
My mom used to take us to the theater for .50 matinees. We would sneak snacks in in a diaper bag or my moms HUGE purse.
Thanks for this fun walk down memory lane. I spent 37 consecutive days ditching classes my senior year in 1986 to play video games at the arcade at the Esplanade Mall. lol!
Does anyone remember the name of the two story arcade that was in this mall? I spent so much time there as a kid, but I've forgotten the name.
the 2 story arcade place was sick
Opening track name pls?
The song is called カセットエクスタシー - ダイヤモンド~♦~ by Dan Mason. It’s track 23 off his album “Lost.” The link to the album is in the video description.
oh my gawwwwwd! Oh. My. Gawd. Great video!
Should I say, great documentary!
😂 Thank you!!
I remember going to this mall in the 80s and picNsave across the street.
Great video man. I would go clubbing Thursday - Saturday from 2003 to 2011. Met my wife at the Agenda lounge.
Thank you! I love that you met your wife at Agenda. Awesome!
I remember those fountains!!
I really enjoyed this. This was my clubbing era.
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I heard about this from locals but haven't lived in this area that long interesting because now it's just shops 👍 closest sears I seen was thousands oaks or Santa Barbara had the sighn still up , crazy how malls are dying and thousand oaks Mall still crazy packed
Ventura malls alot of stores closed now too last time I was in was dead compared to the oaks
So sad this mall is no longer I have so many good memories and I think of it
Sweet memories. Used to hang out at the arcade and pick up chicks there lol.
Not true! The Neshaminy Mall, in Neshaminy, Pa, was the largest and Air Conditioned enclosed Mall in America, opened in 1967, and still alive and well! Check your history dude.
I remember getting busy with CO boys there, at both malls! Almost threw 1 off the second floor, lucky cops came..😅.. darn kids..Holding Ventura Down.. good old days.
I left Oxnard in 1984 to join the military and I was always amazed to see the changes in the city when I returned for a visit. The Esplanade Mall was the biggest and most surprising change to me. Thank you for sharing this story!
Excellent video Carlos! I’m from Orlando Florida. Just Subscribed.
I want kmart back
Fate is fickle- who would have guessed that the small outdated Centerpoint Mall would still be in operation while the newer more modern Esplande gave way to history.
Thank you for this video. I used to go there with my family when I was a little girl! It brought back so many memories. ❤
Hickory Farms was there too
I remember when air brushing first got big it was at the Esplanade and there was a store that sold Cross Colors...Sanio Suprise was my little cousin's favorite store. The movie theatre was cool too. Last movie I saw there was The Hand That Rocks The Craddle.
You guys memer? You memmer.
Thank you for this video. Our parents would take us there and we would always eat Chinese food. At the same spot
👍 great work
