HDs only at the left side because you assume the lateral forces are coming from that direction and that side will be in tension ? Don't you need to cater for other side as well for symmetrical reasons?

Great webinar, very well done. You do have a slight math error in your example. At time 52:27 for the span you said 196, then changed to 210, but it is actually 216. That said with the added span does the new shape selection still work? The deflection was at 99% capacity. Also, have you heard of HVAC formed flanges TDC/TDF? Would you have those shapes in your database?

I try to change the area of cross section, but the result moment demand is not change at all, it is weird which means if we use the beam 150 and 300 does not means anything because of the result is not depends on area of cross section

Great webinar! Thanks for posting it to YT. Any chance you could post the followup answer to the question on nested sections? I'm keen to understand how a toe-to-toe built-up section like a closed box made up from a C-Section and a T-Section and affixed with screws through the flange would be analyzed. On the web crippling capacity and Table G5-2 and G5-3 (fastened vs. unfastened): which one to use if using a connector (e.g. angle bracket) with screws vs. bolts on the web of the CFS section, instead of having the bottom flange sit on a fixed support (e.g. beam)?

Cool... but (and I know it's probably dangerous to let n00bs even use this),... the "instructions" are basically gibberish to normal people "Second Moment of Area (Moment of Inertia) Defaulted in the Metric system to the second moment of area for 150 UB 14.0 Steel. Defaulted in the Imperial system to 722, the moment of inertia for a W14x68" ... you need to explain what it is and what it means, not just use technical terms and tell us about "defaults". And, on that, there should not even BE any "Defaults" at all. If you don't ask the user what they're doing, and instead make a guess by having defaults - that is going to all-but-guarantee you tell them something useless that's going to damage something or hurt someone if relied upon. For example - I've got a 4mm thick bit of stainless steel for a roof rack - it's 60mm wide and supported at 2 points 1.5m apart - I want to know how much it's going to bend from a 50kg load... so your tool needs to understand how to properly let me know which area is used for what (or better still - don't make me work that out - ask me my measurements, and your tool should work it out), how to tell it that my rail is flat (4mm high, and 60mm wide, as opposed to 60mm high and 4mm wide), and you probably should let people switch to g or Kg - newtons are cool and all, but nobody measures things they need that way - you're asking for trouble by forcing people to use unfamiliar numbers they didn't measure...

Are floor trusses an option?

could you explain how you get wind load +13.7 and -30.0, thank you if you can make video for steel beam design will be great
Hi there - thanks for reaching out! Regarding the wind loads of +13.7 and -30.0, David took a weighted average of the different values for different zones on the roof (Table 30.4-1 of ASCE 7-16). They're +13.7 in positive direction so that's where that comes from, and when looking in the negative direction, it comes out to approx -30.0 psf
@24:11 the notation "2x Rim Joist" does not mean (2) Rim Joists. it's 2-inches by blank inches... to be filled in by reading the plans and schedules. your first clue should be the figure. it shows ONE rim joist.

The Aluminum Design Manual also permits design of aluminum sections per the Finite Strip Method. I have never attempted it but would love to as it could be great for complex shapes like window mullions. The first big obstacle was the effort it would take to create cross sections for some of the more complex shapes. Do you have any references or examples of how that might be implemented? Is it possible that ClearCalcs might add this a design module? I don't believe there is anything like it on the market.
Hi Jim, thanks for your comments here! We don't really have any specific materials we can share at the moment but you can use our "Custom Thin-Walled Cross-Section" to do the finite strip analysis. However, as we don't currently have aluminium design module yet, you'll still have to do the actual design outside of ClearCalcs. Thank you for your question here! Here's the answer from our one of our engineers: "Distortional buckling is a bit tricky. A (perhaps oversimplified) explanation is that it's very similar to local buckling, but instead of just one element buckling (e.g. a slender flange), multiple elements buckle locally together as one - thus making the cross-section appear distorted. It's essentially just another failure mode - for members that have stiffened flanges (e.g. typical studs), this might govern - where the web and flanges buckle together instead of just the flange buckling." Hi, Thank you for this amazing webinar I have a question about the simple beam example.. the southern pine wood species allowable bending Fb from table 4B of NDS it shows for No.1 2"-4" wide should be 1500 psi but in the calc. it shows 1250? can you please advise

You are indeed correct-according to Table 4B of the NDS 2018, the allowable bending stress (Fb) for 2"-4" No.1 South Pine Wood species is 1500 psi. We appreciate your keen observation. There used to be a bug in the template when we created that webinar (which about 3 years ago). However, this bug had been corrected. I find the pricing worrysome. You have split parts of reinforced concrete design in various tiers. I would like one package just for reinforced concrete design and nothing else. No wood steel trusses etc. Just concrete.
