Papoo sain Intro By Kaleem Raza.
Kaleem Raza
Top contributor,,,
I have spent countless hours and days with this mysterious person in my life. He was a whole world in him. I witnessed almost on every occasion that people loved him overwhelmingly and interestingly from all classes as he was a heeler with his whirling Dhol. After Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pappu Sain got the true recognition in the Western world. He was a worldly player. He also had amazing sense of remembering and uttering of poetry of Sufis like waris shah, Bulay shah, bahoo sultan and mian Muhammad.... I can write more but will talk about aome other day..... He was a treasure gift of God to me as my first music guru,,,

Pakistan has never invested in any preservation of Kalash wood carving traditions like other countries with Indigenous wood work traditions like New Zealand were Māori have wood carving schools to teach the youth local styles & the like .Māori meeting houses & even NZ government buildings all have Māori statues of ancestors & mythic entities . Even Kalash altars & shrines are attacked by local misguided Muslims , its a very sad situation .

As I have written many a time on dhol today I want to write about the importance of dance in Sufi or Darvaish culture. Sufi dance is an expression as well as a technique to realize self. When Muhammad PBUH said to Ali "You are of me and I am of you". when he heard this. Ali became ecstatic and started dancing. What else to do. when he looked into the eyes of Ali, wajd must have been created. The transfer beyond the scripture happened. How to receive this. There is no way to receive it except by dancing. It would be impossible not to dance so Ali danced. The beat of dhol here resembles something beyond to grasp from the mind, so it resembles a divine power to compel the dervish to dance. It is not the dervish dance but God keeps dancing in him. Whenever a wave of such divine raptures or such divine happens and strikes the heart of the dervish then it creates great waves in the lake of the inner being of the dervish. He is just acceptable and to say that the dervish is dancing is wrong. The dervish is being danced. Something from the beyond is pouring into him and it starts overflowing in his dancing. He tired himself to become senseless. When all his senses cease to exist here he finds the path. He become almost enlightened. Similarly, we have stressed Indian dhol and music which has a great impact. In terms of understanding sound and using it to influence the human system, I have personally studied this aspect in all my travels. Nowhere else in the world has sound been looked at with the kind of depth as in Hindustani music. Within Indian classical music, there are two basic groups: Carnatic music, which is of the South, and Hindustani, of the North. Hindustani music is more about the sound; Carnatic is based on emotions. It is not that they have no understanding of sounds, definitely they do, but there is more emotion involved. It may not have been so earlier, but in the last four hundred years, Carnatic music has become more emotion-based because of the bhakti movement, the devotion movement that happened in southern India. Most of the existing Carnatic music was written by devotees like Thyagaraja or Purandara Dasa, so a lot of emotion was brought into the music. Hindustani music, however, avoided emotion and simply used sound the way it needs to be used. Within Hindustani there are different segments of music, highlighting the various ways that music can be used. If you really want to appreciate Hindustani music - not to learn, not to perform a concert - you would need at least one or two years of training. This is just to be able to appreciate the intricacies of this form of music. They have used sound in such ways that if you are willing to open up, it can do miraculous things to you. What does sound mean? In the subcontinent, we say Nada Brahma, which means Sound is Divine. This is because the basis of existence is in vibration, which is sound. This can be experienced by every human being. If you enter a certain state within yourself, the whole existence becomes sound. This music evolved out of such an experience and understanding. If you observe people who are deeply involved in classical music, you will see they are naturally meditative. They become sage-like; almost like saints. So, this music was not viewed as entertainment. It was a device for the spiritual process. The ragas were used to evolve a person into higher dimensions of perception, experience, and evolution from within.

Raag Darbar was the favorite of King Akbar the Great, Main Tansen is the classical legend of the subcontinent who used to render this raag every night, therefore the name of the raag changed from Hussiani to Darbari, it means that this raag was a must to perform by Tansen in the court

In Rag Darbar, the notes are sliding as ducks take to the water. The preservation of the Kalash Valley, nestled in the remote regions of Pakistan, holds immense cultural significance and historical value. The unique traditions and lifestyle of the Kalash people have been admired for centuries, drawing attention from around the world. To safeguard this cultural heritage, there have been various efforts to have the Kalash Valley declared a UN-protected site. One of the notable initiatives in this regard was an art activity organized in the years 1980, 1989, 2008, and 2012 to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the Kalash culture and traditions. These art activities brought together artists and community members to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of the Kalash Valley through various forms of art such as paintings, sculptures, music, dance, and poetry. One significant contributor to these efforts is Mr. MBugi, an artist and painter currently living in the Netherlands who has dedicated his life to promoting the preservation of cultural heritage in the Kalash Valley. Through his art and advocacy work, MBugi has raised awareness about the challenges the Kalash community faces and the urgent need to protect their way of life. MBugi's artistic contributions have not only highlighted the beauty of the Kalash Valley but have also sparked conversations about the importance of sustainable development and cultural preservation.

Vilayat Ali Khan, one of the best sitarists in the world. He used to practice from early morning, nearabout four o’clock, up to nine or ten o’clock - five to six hours every day. He was staying mostly in India, and just sitting in the garden, Someone asked him, “Now you are world famous; what is the need to practice?” He said, “You don’t know. If I don’t practice one day, I can see the difference. If I don’t practice two days, then those who understand music can see the difference. If I don’t practice three days, even those who don’t understand music can see the difference. It is such a subtle phenomenon that you have to continue to revive it, to live it, to go deeper and deeper into it. You cannot stop.”

Ustad Sharif Khan too, drank the intricacies of classical music from the family of Usatd Vilayat Khan. After dabbling with the tabla and harmonium, he became a musician at the court of the Maharaja of Poonch. He followed the path treaded by his father Ustad Rahim Buksh Khan who too was associated with the state of Poonch, and according to some accounts was the ustad of the maharaja himself. A virtuoso, Ustad Rahim Khan was from a family of vocalists but had switched to string instruments and become an outstanding instrumentalist under the tutelage of Ustad Imdad Khan, the grandfather of Ustad Vilayat Khan. Ustad Sharif Khan became a shagird of Ustad Inayat Khan, the son of Imdad Khan. In the 20th Century, the rise of the sitar has been attributed to three great musicians -Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Ravi Shanker and Ustad Sharif Khan. All three developed distinct angs. Ravi Shanker was influenced by the sarod and Sharif Khan by the veena to extend the scope of the instruments. Vilayat Khan stuck to the inherited excellence of incorporating the gaiki ang.
