Blowing Rock Art & History Museum
United States
Приєднався 22 жов 2014
BRAHM (Blowing Rock Art & History Museum) is an art and history museum nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. Open to the public in 2011, it serves as a community cultural center with a focus on engagement, enrichment and education for all who visit.
At BRAHM we build relationships between the visitors to the museum and artists of great talent and renown, to the voices of our regions rich heritage, and to our community. We connect people to the history and heritage of the Southern Appalachian region and enrich their appreciation of this region. BRAHM allows intimate exploration of both art and history to those who visit our museum.
Like our physical space, this page is a place of beauty but, also a place that invites you to look deeper, to challenge yourself, to question and ask questions, and to grow.

Making with Maud

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study under or work for a legendary artist like Maud Gatewood? Well on Thursday October 17, BRAHM Curator of Exhibitions and Collections, Ian Gabriel Wilson found out.
Wilson was joined in conversation with Charles Parker Boggs, former student and assistant of Maud Gatewood to find out what it was like making with Maud.
About the speaker: Charles Parker Boggs studied art under Maud Gatewood and Robert Marsh at Averett University, earning a B.A. degree for Art in 1991. He would go on to work for Gatewood in her studio for nearly a decade. Boggs earned his M.F.A. in painting from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1998 where he was awarded the Holderness Fellowship, the Howard Scholarship, and a Faculty Award. Charles was also awarded a VSC/UNCG Fellowship to participate in the Vermont Studio Center’s Residency Program. He is a native of Eastern Kentucky where he still maintains a studio.--

You tell it from the ❤, love you Kelly
Great job explaining Kelly
Thank you so much for this video. Years ago I bought the Carawan’s 1968 book “Freedom is a Constant Struggle. Songs of the Freedom Movement“ which has the same cover photo as the one you showed and sang from. Another addition, I assume. I had not really read the book, stories and songs, until a week ago. I then went looking for a video to put life into the words because, even tho I have a 7 decade love affair with music, several shelves of music books and a son who plays horn in symphony orchestras, the lines and dots above the words are just…lines and dots. You folks singing let me hear these songs, let me better feel the stories with them, and enlarged a little more my understanding of the fear, the hardship and bravery people had, fears this old white guy on the Pacific Coast can’t really imagine. Once more, thank you. Bill
Thanks for sharing Precious Jewel, you did a great job on this for sure.
You forgot Merle Travis.
Thank you, Sir. I absolutely enjoyed and appreciate this video.
If I'm gonna' learn about this type of dancing I want to learn from REAL men, manly-men. Yikes.
Doc was awesome
Doc couldn't have watched the kittens playing.
This is my absolute favourite version of Little Mathie Groves ❤️
13:01 Doc might have been fooling when he said he WATCHED a couple kittens playing
Thank you western Africa for this beautiful instrument!
Exactly!
Loved the presentation-Thank you.
Oh yes..I do remember the days of prince ike muirl the pearl and alfred gee. Think you Roy williams and one other guy lived behind Boss Websters Cafe. This is an old friend (George Hardy)!!!
Loved the presentation, really informative You should tighten up your playing on the African ones. It’s an odd look to go so in depth on the African side of the history and then look like you only practice on your modern one
Love the chicken in the background 😍
Thank you for sharing, Sheila!
Great job, Sheila.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So hard to find any videos about Boone, thank you so much for sharing and I will be sure to pick up a copy ASAP ❤
The Chinese invented this instrument over 5000 years ago and brought it to India and North Africa via ancient trade routes.
You don’t need sight to pay music....
You’re kin to Doc, right?
thank you
Very good
Dude just said that there were stones with holes drilled in them .😂😂😂 Sure, because they had drill bits back then.🙄
They had stone drill bits. If that stone was harder than the one being drilled, it worked very effectively.
@@Justme-qn2qw A Quartz Crystal is not a drill Bit. First you have to have a Drill, in order to have a Drill Bit. No Metal, or machining capability..=No Drill. What they had was Crystal twistie fingers.
I did not say they used quartz crystals. They had wood pump drills which the stone fit into. Thousands of drill points have been found. @@hime273
Awesome video buddy
Having played bluegrass music with some damn talented musicians, I learned a capo was used to allow open strings to ring, thus contributing to instrument sustain. It was not considered a "cheater" by bluegrass guitarists, who used a capo very often. Doc, Tony Rice and Norman Blake, three of the very best guitarists of their era, all used capos in their careers. The reason will become apparant by listening to the guitar and the sustain of the open strings during a lead break. I no longer play much guitar, but lean more on mandolin where a capo is not used. A mando has no need for one as a player has 4 fingers, a mando has 4 pairs of strings, and some shapes are repeats as one moves up the fret board for various keys.
Great point, I had not considered the value of the capo for letting the strings ring out. Thank you for watching and the thoughtful comment.
Excellent presentation. Good content nice delivery.
Thanks for this. Ms. McCoy is an inspiration. I've been fishing since I was four. Right now I'm using my Granddads spinning rod and a Mitchell 300 reel. The last time I fly fished was over ten years ago, but I've been studying at YT University to try and get my skills back. Tight lines. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Was not born in Deep Gap, duh.
My dad grew up on a 50 acre tomato farm just north of Pittsburgh ,Pa. He said when he plowed the one field and it rained , many , many arrow heads would turn up . I wish I had one . Who were they ?
Guys boobs are bigger then the girls.
What an incredibly detailed and great video!!!!! Thank you!!!
Love the song around 32-33 min. What is it called?
I love that song too! That is called "Reuben's Train"
Wonderful overview of an amazing artist! You did a great job presenting the highlights of Doc's career.
Thank you for posting this, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Where can you print these type of graphics or what company offers lettering services for these type of display letters?
The text was laid out with Adobe Illustrator. We sent the file to a local printing company, Creative Printing, and they were able to get us the print in a few days. We prefer to go local to keep the money in our community and because sometimes there can be issues with a letter or two, on their end or our end - it's easy to mess up.
Lol you’re no expert kid. Anyone can read a prompt in front of a bunch of doc records
You are the bomb. A wealth of knowledge and cool to boot. "Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon." I buy the pink one for my hat.
Many years ago I bought one of Stacy's Roosters on a Stump and commissioned him to create a likeness of my husband with our large black poodle sitting on a stump. Both never fail to make us smile for almost 30 years. Magic.
Cool video. Amazing website. Thank you. Lots of folks tie the old colorful wet flies, particularly the Ray Bergman wets. I don't think I (personally) know anybody who actually fishes them. I'm finding they work as well as anything. Which is interesting. What does that say about Matching the Hatch ideology?
Thanks for watching. While I cannot answer your question, I'm sure Fred Klein can. You can contact him via his website, www.grizzlykingfly.com/
From Boone Nice to see our history before our history Of that era brought out. Fascinating time. Ironically 95 Ish I remember hearing about those digs Just out of high school then. Maybe one day We will learn of the ancient tribe that used the ancient tribe that was around that now dry lake 10,000 years ago. So much history there
Where can I get the posters that are in the background?
Hello Irene, the posters are part of a traveling exhibition called "When All God's Children Get Together" BRAHM has the exhibit on loan from the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University. The exhibit will be on display at BRAHM through November 26. You can learn more about the exhibit at the following link: www.wnchistory.org/woodford/
