I was curious on how similar they could sound, so I tried my best to get them to sound the same. That was not an easy task. They actually sound more different than my analog vs vst comparisons. Which synth do you like the best? I used Valhalla Vintage Verb and Valhalla Delay on the sends along with some U-he Satin and iZotope Ozone on the master. EQ-ing was kept to the minimum. Get the Repro-1 presets ( Repro-5 presets) here: gum.co/XpKVB Or at Sound7: bit.ly/3daCZY6 This is a full track comparison between the U-he Repro-1 and the Behringer Pro-1. Just some delay and reverb (Valhalla VintageVerb and Valhalla Delay). ...

Yamaha DX7 (1983) vs. Native Instruments FM8 (2006)
These sound great, so is the Rev2 just a more advanced version of the 08?
Thank you! :) I guess you can say that. To put it simple: Almost the same oscillators and filters (I believe the 08 sounds a bit more raw, Rev2 a bit more refined). The Rev2 adds sub oscillators, FX and a refined interface.
¿Cómo se llama el genero del track?
NOT EVEN CLOSE 😢
The Korg has more of an 80s sound to it. That is what I prefer. The Pro 2 sounds more modern like 2000s.
The physical DX7 sounds warmer to my ears. FM8 is good, but doesn't sound the same I think.
wow the bells were massively different. So much harsher on plugin. DX7 all the way.
FM8 first pad was so much more static. The tone was there but it's obviously not able to emulate modulation correctly. The DX7 sounded better therefore, richer, and the tone also was *ever* so slightly warmer.
1984.12
Doing an electronic 80’s dance right now. Cheers!
thank you for your video
That very much sounds like CHVRCHES ;)
In the 1988 Kids Incorporated version of the Foreigner song "Say You Will", the Yamaha DX7 internal patch "Electric Piano 1" was heard.
there are so many options for coloring VSTs these days with various preamp, distortion, and even digital sampler output stages. there is nothing inherently inferior about FM8, it just needs some treatment to sound as vibrant and interesting as a hardware synth.
I know! But the DX7 is already colored, so you don't need to put in the time. The DX7 sounds full and "right" to me, FM8 don't. Dexed VST and Korg Opsix (native and hardware) sound right to me as well, so it's not a software vs. hardware or analog vs. digital kind of thing.
This is a hilariously good example of why to use the DX7. I wonder how much of that would get fixed by throwing a simple lpf on the FM8 output
Thank you! :) You would need more coloring than a simple lpf to get the FM8 to sound similar, but not much. You can get very far in software today. The free Dexed VST is almost identical, but I'm still keeping my DX7.
Awesome song! One thing i dont understand.. when you switch the synths is it all of them or just the lead line? I did a similar comparison a few years ago and remember it sounding quite a bit different but maybe i did a bad job matching hah. Because here im like did you just switch out one sound? Because i almost cant hear the switch and im a synth vet hah
Thank you! I switch all the synths except the polysynth which is Repro-5 all the time (used the crossfader in Ableton). This shows that it doesn't make a big difference in the mix, but when you solo the tracks (especially the bass) there's a big difference in my opinion.
@@eivindengedal9830 ok yes i noticed that similar thing myself.. bunch of tracks together sounds close.. start stripping it back and sounds different.. especially the bass.. exactly.. Have u played with any of the "tweaks" if u still have ur pro 1 to make it sound closer? I also know there is the envelope length dial i think my hardware was towards the "longer" end
Sounds better than an M1.
Totally different beast. Crazy to think that they are only 3 years apart. M1 has 4 megs of samples, DW has a couple of bytes. M1 has a non resonant digital filter, DW has an analog resonant filter. M1 has a pretty advanced sequencer, velocity, aftertouch, miltitimbral... I could go on forever.
@@eivindengedal9830 Yeah, please go on for Eva. I never had a DW. Wish for one, though. In these 8ties a lot was happening. Very fast. After that mainly refinement. Bigger memory. With that better samples.
You can hear a slight difference, but nothing that can't be fixed with some EQ. Great demo!
Thank you! Not much in it. Roland Cloud is a little more midrangey and forward sounding.
got any presets for the juno 60? thanks
No. Sorry! I don't subscribe to the Roland Cloud anymore.
@@eivindengedal9830 Oh, I can just send you my software

Does Rolandnoffer a free trial of their juno 60 and jupiter 4 ?
DX'y sounding but not as sterile. Has little more hair on it.
These soundpacks fit perfectly well mainly for composing a Darksynth track
Glad you like it! :)
I wish the different voices were labeled with text. I have some old recordings I made with this synth and need help identifying the voices used, and ideally if there is a counterpart I might find on a modern virtual synth so I can recreate them as closely as possible with MIDI. I do have the ClusterSound virtual DW8000. Thanks!
Hi! Most of these patches are made from scratch. I have many VSTs, but none of them reminds me of this synth.
I used to have the Prophet '08... it can sound warm but also a bit fizzy sometimes.
Yes. Fizzy and on the edge of shrill sometimes. It's not exactly all sweet spot. It takes some time to get to know. That PWM-sound is great, though. And when you get the top end right it shines.
@@eivindengedal9830 The Prophet '08 certainly can sound great... it was revolutionary for its price and polyphony when it was launched in 2008. I bought one straight away and kept it for more than a decade, so I'm sure that says something!
@@lundsweden I love it! Sold it, but I want to own one again. I have been putting it side by side with a Prophet 6, and I chose the 08 over it several times.
The Pro1 sounds a bit better to me, but the Repro 1 saves space, money, is convienient with preset patches and patch storage and has in-the-box ease of use!
I agree! The Pro1 was sold. I still have Repro.
FM8 sounds so flat, dull and plasticky compared to the DX7. The hardware has so much more soul, liveliness and clarity. Not even comparable. In 2022 it’s even more embarrassing that NI can’t improve it.
I know! I tried FM8 again recently, and it was a waste of time. Flat, dull and plasticky as you say. The DX7 sounds 3D, organic and warm (how can a digital synth sound warm??!).
Wonderful demo! I think this keyboard is underrated and has some fantastic uses. Thanks for sharing!
Can you make a tutorial for how to make the melancholy pad? Sounds so nice. Regards
Don't these presets already come with dexed? or "why not" ? (and where are all the basic presets for dexed then? all the famous...)
Back when I made the video, there were few presets that came with Dexed. At least with the version I had at the time. I've seen that there is a huge bundle of sounds coming with the recent versions. I have stated that I didn't make these presets my self, since I don't enjoy programming the DX7 at all, but I have spent a lot of time treasure troving presets. These are some of my personal favorites. I use some more of the famous factory presets in my DX7 vs FM8 video.
Have you added more presets or is this still a 64 sound set?
It is 89 presets now. :)
@@eivindengedal9830 Price? Love your presets. Some of the best I've heard.
@@brucebaker3205 Thank you! :) There is a link to the store in the description.
@@eivindengedal9830 I just purchased this sound set. I was able to load it into banks 1 and 2, but not 3 and 4. Are those banks not accessible for your presets? Is this a Rev2 issue or something that I can fix? Thanks.
@@brucebaker3205 The presets were made on a Prophet 08, and it only has two banks (A and B). That's why you can't access bank 3 and 4. I can only fix this if I get my hands on a Rev2. Sorry!
what an amazing playing and video. One of the videos I come back just to hear again. Thanks!
Nice to hear! Thank you. :)
thanks for tame impala song
for a digital recreation, it's not that bad. i still gotta take a look at your new video. DX7 vs Dexed, but that video somehow refuses to play. no idea why.
That's strange. Hope you get it to work soon. Dexed is free, so you should take it for a spin if you haven't already. :)
At 3:00, the edited version of the Yamaha DX7 patch "Tub Bells".
I always think digital synths are no more than a midi controller with built-in vst plugin.
The old 80s converters have a certain sound, though. It's the same with 80s drum machines and samplers like the E-mu SP 1200. Modern digital synths are more like VSTs, but they probably put more into the software than with VSTs. They are also not reliant on a spesific OS, and does not need to be updated regularly.
@@eivindengedal9830 oh I don't know anything about the convertor and the sonic difference it makes!
roland sounds more like a real hardware.
I agree! It's got a fuller sound. I just bought the Softube Model 84. It's got that hardware-like sound, but you don't need to bother with the Roland Cloud subscription and all the problems that comes with it. The 106 sounds a little different than the 60, though. Anyway, I think they both fill the Juno-role well.
2021, enjoying my dual EX8000s w DW8P
I thought I was watching the intro and then I realized this is the whole video ☠️
FM8 sounds slightly brighter, but almost identical....I think much better than Arturia....
I haven't tried the Arturia DX7, but Dexed is a free plug-in that really is identical to the DX7. Hear for yourself: ua-cam.com/video/wbMzttE-jys/v-deo.html
what would you choose between this one and the dw8000?
I guess I would choose the DW8000, but I haven't tried it. The DW8000 has a lot more features, but I have read that some people prefer the high end of the DW6000. My impression is that the DW8000 is a more complete package and have a more balanced sound, and the DW6000 has more character. Don't take my word for it, though. I haven't tried the DW8000.
@@eivindengedal9830 thanks!
I actually prefer repro lol
Really nice track.
Thank you!
you can actually tell way more of a difference in the mix.. ive heard another comparison between one of Uhe plugins and an expensive analog and with the mix you could tell immediately.. but you just hear it solo.. not so much.. i think when people say things like "you cant even tell in the mix anyway vst vs analog" i think they are often thinking in terms of like a rock band with a keyboardist in the background, in which case no , you could probably use a cheap synthedit synth and nobody would care lol.. but make a whole synth only track yea you can tell
I think it's easier to mix analog synths. I feel that they take up less room in the mix. The newer vst's are much better, though, and you can carve out problematic frequences on the vst's.
Ugh soft synths are gross
Negligible differences. The Repro sounds slightly more dull, but that can be fixed with adding some saturation. I just sold my Berhinger Pro1 because I already own Repro, and patching the modulation on the Berhinger was a pain in the ass.
I agree! Still on the fence about selling the pro-1, though. I probably will.
@@eivindengedal9830 I can understand that. It is a great machine, but lately I've found that making it fit into my mixes has been difficult, and with Repro I can adjust parameters after I've recorded something. I sampled a bunch of sounds from the Pro1 before trading it and got a bunch of Eurorack gear for it.
@@zechs5079 Sounds like a wise decision!
