Hello! My name is Emanuel Andreasson, and I'm a dart frog breeder based in Sweden. I make in-depth tutorials on dart frog care and vivarium keeping that I hope you'll find useful if you're new to the hobby. I've kept dart frogs for the past five years and I currently keep eight different dart frog species as well as some other exotic animals.

Simple Low-Tech Ranitomeya & Oophaga Vivariums - No Background!
In today's video, I'll be showing you how I set up two small and simple breeder vivariums for thumbnail poison dart frogs. These enclosures don't even have a background, and they only took me a few hours to complete! However their dimensions are designed in a very smart way to make the most out of the space, since they are very narrow and very deep.

[CHECK PINNED COMMENT] Making a BIOACTIVE Poison Dart Frog Enclosure
are you worried about any possible parasites or other disease from wild aphids?
Very nice. Thank you. I would love to see a video with the sound that each local of frog makes. That is how I choose if I want to keep them or not.
Grattis till dom nya grodorna och alla terrarier!
Yayy! I hope to see updates on how breeding is going
Two excellent choices of frogs.
Excellent builds. I always enjoy these videos. I am a keeper of multiple Oophaga pumilio locales, and in the American hobby it is recommended to keep them in much larger enclosures (30-40g, 18x18x24 inches or larger). I've not seen them kept in smaller enclosures like this, and I would really like to see how this goes, because space is a constraint for me.
We'll see how it goes. 18x18x24 is a really good starting size to recommend. In my personal, opinion, the tiny species can be kept in something smaller if it is set up optimally (at least the tiny Ranitomeya reticulata; I'd like to upgrade the Oophagas at some point in the future since they are a bit larger and need room for all the tadpole care but for now I think this is fine for them too), and I also think that these measurements are far more valuable than let's say a 12x12x18 despite both of them being a similar volume (though these are still larger)
another thing to point out, you are using most of the vertical space in thes enclosures instead of just having a background and floor space. this makes a hug difference. A lot of people waste this opportunity. some species climb into trees to deposit eggs in bromeliads. not providing climbing space just does not make sense.
@@billsmith1998 Oophaga pumilio are definitely the most arboreal dart frog species (apart from Oophaga arborea), so it may work very well. I would personally do something like this with a bit more height (24-30 inches), but you also said you'd like to upgrade them at some point, which I highly recommend doing, not because these terrariums are too small, but because with pumilio, you tend to see much cooler and more unique behaviors the larger you house them. I also like the depth; pumilio being a little more finnicky might really appreciate being able to put a bit more distance between themselves and the doors, especially breeding pumilio, as they may be more productive with some privacy. I've seen a lot of Ranitomeya kept in these "slot style" (thin but deep) vivariums, most likely for that reason, being a more shy genus.
Unfortunately, it seems like UA-cam has a technical issue making be unable to add subtitles at the moment, so there won’t be any for this video until that’s fixed. Sorry about that. Hopefully this issue will be fixed soon so I can at least add subtitles to the next one. It’ll be a few months until I upload my next video, but it will be one of my best ones ever that I think you’ll really appreciate. Follow me on Instagram for more frequent updates.
Great video, thank you! I’m looking forward to watching more of them
Hello ! First, happy new year :) thanks a lot for these tutorials, very clear and complete :) I didn’t know about hypertufa ! I heard various feedbacks on hygrolon. How is it going for you ? Also, how much space did you put approximately between the glass panels for the top ? Thanks in advance Best regards 🙌
I love the hygrolon, by far my favorite background. Everything grows well on it and no issues. As long as you let it go all the way to the bottom of the enclosure (so it can suck up water from the drainage layer). My most successful old setup is a 4 year old tank with only a hygrolon background (see my leucomelas vivarium in my frog room tour). I believe it’s like 6 cm between the glass panels on this one but I’m not entirely sure.
Very similar to Troy Goldberg. Nice work
Submission #8 here (46:40) here. Sorry for sending video instead of pictures, didn’t read your instructions properly. I setup the vivarium a little more over a year ago and the plants grew like weeds. I agree it looks a little bit overplanted although I trim once 1-2 weeks but I love plants and it is my first dart frog vivarium so that explains why I went crazy with plant diversity lol. The back and sides are made of treefern panels and are indeed completely overgrown. The full tank can be viewed on my channel. Thank you Emanuel for this awesome review session and the work and time you put into this video, all the vivs and your feedback are really inspirational to do things better! All the best, David from the Netherlands
I found you through this video! Liked and subbed right away. Will you do this more often?
I don't want to make too many, since I think people will lose interest, but I have done it as a new year's tradition for two years now and I'm most likely going to continue that way
I also turned last year's livestream into two videos, which you can check out if you want to see more reviews (in a slightly more condensed form)
i sent you a pm on insta!
I haven't received anything actually
@Tropical_Tutorials look at you chat request
@ I’ve received no message requests
@Tropical_Tutorials instagram said your account doesn't allow new message requests from anyone
I am submission #6. Thank you for your positive words. Planning on building another one this year. I want to house Auratus in the new one.
Nice video, fun idea
Thank you for the review! I’m submission 9! A couple things as well! I do have some peperomia emarginella and some ficus quercifolia growing in the back! Hopefully once they grow in, then it will look more ‘jungle’ like! I also do have filter foam and a small layer of my soil (lps tropical mix, charcoal, and some bark). Thank you for your time and rating!! :)
Thank you for watching! This time, I don't hink I'll edit the stream into videos, but you still have this VOD of the stream to look at. I'm going to keep doing these vivarium review livestreams as a New Year's tradition, so it'll be a while until the next one, and I'm not taking in submissions for the next one right now. However, once it's time to send in submissions for the next one I'll announce it on my Community page
Last one is me 2:20:57. Having a hard time with making a mostly bamboo hardscape look nice. If any future viewers have suggestions would love input.
@@Stwinky Good point. We had some discussions about palms in the middle of the stream (submission #16, but the discussion continued a bit in the chat after that one) which might be good to combine with bamboo
Great videos, love your attitude and approach. Liked, subscribed and commented.
Very beautiful terrarium! Are your terrariums equipped with an overflow system to evacuate waste water or do you not have this problem?
I use drainage pipes (I normally use the top half of a plastic bottle, since you have a good lid on it) where I can access the drainage layer, put a hose and siphon out the water. Drilling the tanks to allow for automatic drainage would be better though. You can see how I do it in my video "How to Set Up a Dart Frog Vivarium", and in my next video which releases in about a week. In tanks with filter foam, I don't use a drainage pipe, since you can just stick down a hose to the side of the filter foam.
Tropical tutorials would you tell me what the tadpole rack is called please? Cheers
It's just some random rack which you're supposed to put screws or other small parts in. Not intended for tadpoles. ChatGPT suggested to use the term "small parts organizer" or "storage cabinet for small parts" in English, because the Swedish word "skruvlåda" would directly translate to "screw box", which sounds a bit inappropriate in English :)
Alltid kul att se mer sånt här i Sverige!
Hello from norway. I will sub
Might just have to give this a try
Your videos primarily inspired me to start documenting and making my own videos here on UA-cam regarding vivariums/dart frogs. Amazing work as always~
@@ToxicTerrariums Awesome to hear, thanks man!
Sorry for my novice question. Is the bookshelf your using Ikea Ivar? Nice upload!
@@cyphercracker Yes it is indeed!

Yay
Awesome room man. What's the name of the climbing plant towards the center top of the vivarium at 1:30? I have seen it before but have no idea what its called.
Not sure which one you’re referring to (could perhaps be Begonia prismatocarpa, Peperomia emarginella och Ficus pumila Quercifolia), but I mention the name of every single plant in my collection in my video ”My entire vivarium plant collection”
@Tropical_Tutorials thanks it was Ficus pumila Quercifolia :)
Just discovered your channel. I really like Serpadesigns and ants canada. This scratches a similar itch and I love it! Keep up the great work!
You’re my fave channel currently, just got into darts and have 4 dendrobates tinctorius, and 3 phyllobates vitattus. Dart frogs are such cool pets and i love your terrariums!
This is great content man. I subscribed. Keep up the good work. Support from America🇺🇲
8:27 i can smell this frame lol
@Tropical_Tutorials Tackar,riktigt bra videos,massa goa tips
can i keep some lined day geckos with some thumb nail dart frogs?
It might not be impossible in a huge vivarium, but I wouldn't recommend it, due to their different temperature and humidity requirement. You'd need to make room for both microclimates There are some cases where small Phelsumas have successfully cohabitated with dart frogs but it's not as safe as widely tried and tested as dart frogs with mourning geckos. In general, there's a saying that "if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't mix species" which probably applies
Nevermind, I just saw that you wrote thumbnail dart frogs (I was imagining some medium-large dart frog species). I would absolutely not try or recommend that, since the size difference would very likely lead to an incident (the geckos attempting to eat the frogs)
OMG i have been waiting for this
Dart frog man returns
Love it 😊
In the very near future, it's finally time to do another Vivarium Review Livestream, where I'll be reviewing your vivariums! I did this a year ago (the livestream was also edited into two videos, which you can find on my channel) and I'm planning to continue doing it as a New Year's tradition. I haven't decided on what day I'll do the livestream, but most likely around the new year (maybe Dec 30th or Jan 1st). HOW TO PARTICIPATE: - Send some picture of your vivarium(s) to contact.tropical.tutorials@gmail.com - Max 3 pictures in total per person (could be multiple shots of the same tank, or different tanks, maybe also an overview of your frog room). - Mention in the email what species you're keeping in there/will keep in there. - I'm expecting mostly dart frog vivariums, but other animal species are allowed too. - You can expect constructive criticism. - If there is time, I might also take in submissions during the livestream, but your chance of being featured is significantly higher if you submit your pictures in advance. - If I get too many submissions, I can't guarantee that I'll have time to go through all of them.
1 minute in, let’s get it!
Been waiting for this!!!! Awesome!
Great vide/tutorial, very detailed and well done. Any chance you can make a video on how your plants are growing in the foam filter pad? Thanks
@@CJoefarhat I’ll definitely do like a 1 year update or something to show how it’s growing in, and this year’s collection tour is coming out in a few days so you’ll see it then too. But in terms of how I’m planting them in the foam, it’s literally just making a cut and squeezing it in like I show in the video
Great! Look forward to it !
I just got my first eggs from my Ranitomeya amazonica "Iquitos". I found this video so helpful. Thank you so much 😊!
Hey, question: do you think a 30x14x18 enclosure would be big enough for 4?
@@antwilon5699 If you mean inches, yes it would be suitable for around four. If it’s centimeters, it’s not big enough for a single one.
this might be a weird question, but seeing as most of them say “can be kept in groups” (minus the few you said prefer it) would it be fine to house some of them solo?
Dart frogs can be kept solo, however they tend to be more active in pairs/groups, and in general, with most of the species that can be kept in groups, it'll be more fun to keep them that way in my personal opinion
I'm in North America and I don't get aphids on my pea plants here, but I do get a lot of aphids on other plants such as brassicas and squashes. What a great idea to feed these buggers! I garden organically so I have no shortage of aphids during the growing season, and could easily sprout brassicas if i wanted to continue a culture in the winter. Thank you for the great idea!
