The Only Hero in Westeros [Game of Thrones Book Club, Jon V]
After just five chapters, Jon Snow has left a profound impression on us. His story is told differently than any other POV character, and in this episode we make the case that GRRM's sporadic, snapshot rendering of Jon gives him a heroic theatricality. Cam revisits the previous Jon chapters to analyze the character's escalating, revolving door of roles and companions. Is Jon meant to be a character we can believe in, or just another cautionary tale? Maggie elevates the discussion with some pointed Tolkien echoes and we work together to make sense of the relationship between Jon and Ghost as veiled hunters.

Diablo 4 Flourishes in Season of the Infernal Hordes
Переглядів 236День тому
Diablo IV is officially great. Last season overhauled the core systems and solidified the game's fun factor, but this season makes some equally vital investments in endgame content and class balancing. Barbarian is finally good! The art direction continues to be top tier! Gold finally matters! Discussion segments include: state of the game, campaign impressions, class update, wrap-up questions,...
The Justice Paradox [Game of Thrones Book Club, Catelyn VII]
Переглядів 109День тому
Here it is, the long-awaited trial by combat chapter! The fight itself inspires a conversation about whether or not 'justice' exists in the world of Westeros. Maggie also dives into the many mysteries of the Weeping Woman (or is there more than one?) Cam reframes our despised Robert Arryn as a kaleidoscopic political cartoon of the monarchy, and we examine the glorious, destabilizing suspicion ...
Strange Darling: A Symphony of Style & Surprise

The best movies are the ones that surprise you. Strange Darling was not at all what we expected, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Our spoiler-filled discussion dives deep into everything that made this movie fantastic, from stylized imagery and playful structure to deliciously subverted expectations and wonderfully robust characters. And the parallels to classics like Texas Chainsaw Massacr...
The Many Pyrrhic Victories of Ned Stark [Game of Thrones Book Club, Eddard X]
Переглядів 8614 днів тому
In six ruthlessly efficient pages, George R. R. Martin epitomizes his distinct brand of medieval fantasy. Ned Stark’s turning point becomes a breaking point as the ghosts of his past and horrors of his present force him to confront his bleak future. We break down this purgatorial distillation echo to make the case that Ned has become one of the ghosts in his dreams. We close by reviewing four m...
Sing Sing: A Staggering Dramatic Achievement

Tyrion: Sisyphus or Court Jester? [Game of Thrones Book Club, Tyrion V]
Переглядів 10921 день тому
Tyrion’s treacherous journey through the Eyrie pulls us in wildly different directions. Maggie is inspired to do a deep dive on court jesters and fools, the overlooked and underestimated wild cards of royal life. Cam base jumps into Greek mythology and the myth of Sisyphus, where he finds an eerie number of tragic parallels, not just to Tyrion, but to all the Lannisters. Together, we work to qu...
Alien Romulus: The Best Sixth Sequel Ever Made

Alien: Romulus isn't just a great horror movie or a great sci-fi movie, it's a fantastic Alien movie, and probably the best sixth sequel ever made. Then we zoom in to look at the elements of Romulus that feel so wonderfully authentic, and almost make the fi...
The Unsteady Hand of Fate [Game of Thrones Book Club]

Bran and Dany have always been the two most prophesied characters in this story, but this chapter draws the connections more explicitly than ever before. Rhaenyra Targaryen is seen standing with Syrax, Silverwing and a red dragon!? tell im wrong and i will for ever hold my tongue.. it could also be Caraxes. but that makes no sens tho Daemon and Rhaenyra is not on speaking thearms.......

Here’s a half formed thought( a veritable Quasimodo); long legs is some kind of hellish cuckoo bird. A cuckoo bird will hide its own eggs in the nest that doesn’t belong to it. The cuckoo bird will hatch shove the other babies out of the nest, and the mother bird winds up raising the cuckoo. Long legs visits houses with children and presents the family with a homunculus of their child. Later in the movie, we discover Kiernan Shipka’s doll hidden in the floorboards of a loft. And that’s when Kieran‘s character supposedly regains consciousness. Almost like a bird hatching.

Wow, I can not tell you how REFRESHING it is to hear people talking about their experience taking their time with Diablo 4. Most videos I find on UA-cam is someone talking about how to rush through the game at breakneck speed, playing the game like it’s a job, and then complain there is nothing to do in the endgame. I agree with you both, Diablo 4 is the best it’s ever been, and the future is bright! 👍🏽

Angel Heart, a little further down the literary food chain, yet still a Faustian tale is what came to my mind. Unwittingly an investigator is trying to solve a missing person/murder case- turns out he is the perp guided, step by step, by the Devil's hand. She IS the accomplice she is seeking. The proof is that in the end she fires only three shots but the gun fails to destroy the doll. Why? Because after killing her Mom her task is complete. "He will tell you where to look and what to not look at."

I think she gets off because it’s pretty clear the detective killed his family and she stopped him. Her mother being involved in the murders makes things more complicated but undoubtedly, there’s room for a sequel.

It also makes sense that a female Faustus would be younger and reluctant, as women have adulthood thrust upon them through menstruation, whereas males have to go out and find it. A Joseph Campbell take on it perhaps.

So interesting. Also her mom was so good in the one episode of the walking dead as Paula that she was that I never forgot her and she was in ONE episode and stole it. Love that actress hope to see her way more. Not a huge fan of the girl who plays Lee from it follows. She is just very boring and dull in each role I've seen her in, maybe she needs a new kind of role that asks more of her emotionally. She's hard to care about.

I finally read Piranesi... so now I get to listen to this! I have too many things to say about both these books. I would say they are... spiritual? Yeah, that's the right word for me. They are both descriptions of the world from a similar frame of reference that is uncommon and typically seen as crazy? Both of these authors nailed it. And, maybe this is narcissistic, but I heavily identified with both these characters, especially Piranesi. The labyrinth that gets talked about in so many myths gives me that homesick feeling, and it is exciting when an artist can blend the physiological and mythological, and ground it enough to share the logical world. It's almost like the conscious and subconscious parts of a mind are getting to have a chat. Anyway, excited to find a reader of similar tastes. If you haven't watched 'The Green Knight' by A24 films, you will probably love it too. Also, (spoilers for anyone reading) I think The Keeper was the narrator.

Happy birthday! I always compared Robert to the king. Even being wards at and taught in the Aerie. Whining and threatening violence to get a drink, to get a wans body as a thing not a person? King's done that. Cheering and inviting violence for their own amusement? Yeah this is the king but shorter. And no! There is no justice here! Varis Egen had to DIE just to stop a murder for the charge of, "I'm very suspicious of you!". There are interesting questions about why Varis was chosen, whether, despite her delusions, Lysa could be competent to understand the consequences of hurting or further imprisoning Tyrion on her sister's behalf.

Hard disagree on Harker going to jail. There is significant evidence that her boss stabbed his wife and charges her after doing so. The same with the mother who attacks with a knife. The mother killing the other agent with the shotgun will also have physical evidence associated with it. She solved the case, and saved the girl.

Saying you have endless sympathy for season 8 of GoT for not having source material to work with but not extending that same grace to HoTD when they had their budget cut, episodes reduced, and dealt with the writer's strike seems disingenuous and makes a lot of the comparative critiques incredibly hollow. Saying season 2 of this show is OBJECTIVELY worse than season 8 of GoT is laughable. We are all entitled to our opinions, but using the word "objectively" just makes it a false statement.

But like, WOULD Lee's life be ruined in this end, cus with the daughter as a witness, and what the crime scene would show, is that the dad killed the wife and was charging towards Lee and his daughter so she shot out of self defense. Those facts alone, without devil doll shit, would get Lee off. And maybe Lee knows better than to mention that devil doll shit, as a more logical person & her FBI mind.

I think Lee either becomes what her mother was in all of this and the child will be Longlegs, or the other way around... I don"t think she will be arrested at all. Longlegs knew this will happen, it was the plan of the devil from the start: to kill, make fun of police, stir s@hit up, and humiliate clean, young souls (aka Lee) and drag them down to hell and then repeat. Because eventually why does the devil do these things? because he can, from fun.

I have a different theory. What If lee is not Faust but Gretchen? The mother is Faust and has a deal with Mephisto and Gretchen/Lee is the one who gets involved and commits sin. In the Play Gretchen gets pregnant by Faust and drowns herself. Lee gets involved and doesn't now how to Help herself other than kill/commit sin. What If the movie is a alternative Version of Faust where Gretchen is "the final Girl" ?

Harker presumably does have her soul taken to hell in the end, because we know that she was "allowed to live" only because her mother was doing this work bringing the dolls to families and causing their deaths as part of some ritual for the devil. The *ONLY* reason her mom was doing that, was to stave off the devil, who had essentially claimed her daughter, Lee's soul. We got no indication. this process had ended, on the contrary, her mom was still doing the work for the devil, and was at the birthday parry in the end because presumably, she was continuing her work of staving off the devil from taking Lee's soul. again that's the only reason her mom was doing that at all. she would have no reason to continue bringing these dolls to birthday parties and bringing about the deaths of the families, if the connection between Lee and the devil had been severed. and as we know with faustian bargains, you can't back out of the agreement at the end, and you will eventually be dragged to hell. If Lee was 33 during the events of the film that would be 24 years after the bargain was made at her 9th birthday party anyway. So Lee killing her mom and stopping the ritual from taking place, all but guarantees that she will now no longer be "allowed" to live, and will be taken by the devil, which is essentially the same as being dragged to hell.

I think the name Longlegs comes from a Friedrich Nietzsche quote. He says, "In the mountains, the shortest way is from peak to peak. But for that one must have long legs." The peaks are meant to represent knowledge and truth. Those with long legs would be the few who know truth and are entitled to the sacrifices of others for their cause. One can't simply choose to have long legs, so knowledge and truth aren't for everyone, only the genetically gifted. Nietzsche believes only the strong have access to the truth, the strong would be predetermined at birth by their genetics, and have every right to enslave weaker men. He also said, "God is dead," which was meant to convey how our scientific advances were quickly destroying the need for faith and religion in the world. He was extremely anti-religion.

  • @johngleue
    @johngleue 14 днів тому

The unholy trinity is Satan (the dragon), the anti-christ (beast of the sea), and the false prophet (beast of the earth). I think it makes more sense for longlegs to be the false prophet. The false prophet creates idols of worship that aren't actually alive but are given a voice through the power of Satan. Longlegs' goal is to push people to embrace the anti-christ. This is what happens in the movie. The dolls enrapture the families and our then under Satan's spell. In their fight against God, the Sea Beast and the False Prophet join forces with the Dragon. They persecute the "saints" and those who do not "worship the image of the beast of the sea" and influence the kings of the earth through three unclean spirits to gather for the battle of Armageddon. Longlegs, the false prophet, targets homes he describes as "white." White is a symbol of purity, and the false prophet is tasked with destroying the faithful. He wants to destroy purity, and in the movie, he destroys families.
