A new device for safe application of glyphosate to woody weeds is being trialled at a number of small sites in Victoria, Australia. Instead if spraying, the device scrapes the stem of the weed and applies a small amount of glyphosate to the exposed cambium layer. This short video shows the device in operation. What do you do with the excess soil, rocks and wraps that may still be on the root ball, or other material from excavating, decompaction and aeriation? Is there a dumpyard for that stuff?

I work for Chalet in the Plant Health Care department and see this problem throughout the area. Sometimes it does start from the installation and other times they just keep adding mulch or compost. Good video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍🏼

terrible choice of trees to prune for demonstration purpose. That was your first mistake.. ONE OF MANY.. you said "epicormic shoots rob nutrients from the tree" ya right.. show some science to back that up... this is a perfect example of human centric thinking. Do you really think you know what's better for the tree than it does itself? Complete ignorance.. And did you ever bother to think why all those shoots popped up in the first place.... here's a little hint... over pruning... which is what you just did... You totally gutted that tree and it's only going to fill back in with more and more sprouts.. all those sprouts are going to look terrible. This is a perfect example of how not to prune a tree.. You and the guy who previously over-pruned this tree have created a long-term maintenance issue. Your focus on collar cuts also shows a lack of understanding. Deadwood won't rip into the trunk. Collar cuts are unnecessary on most of that small stuff, Leaving stubs on small cuts won't hurt the tree, and can actually be beneficial in fruit trees that get a heavy pruning. You basically just sat in the middle of the tree and massacred the interior growth... the only place I saw any crown reduction was in the title.. and low limbs do more than provide screening for the house and street. They serve an important purpose for the tree, but your human-centric viewpoint doesn't get it. Anyone watching should know that what you see in this video is not proper pruning. Gutting a tree like that is frowned upon. This is exactly the type of over-pruning that should be avoided.

At 34:35, I realize your proposed safe method is the same method I did a couple years ago where I did it without knowing the implications of sloppy cutting methods such as an insufficient undercut. I had an overhead rope clipped into my upoer ds, a lanyard around the branch clipped to lower ds. I still got pulled into and pinned against an approx. 10" oak branch. I tried to cut my wire core lanyard unsuccessfully to free myself, and then, because the branch tips were close to the ground, I had my ground guy lift up on the tips, which freed me. I've learned to always try to do a better undercut and sometimes 1 or more additional kerf /safety cuts when I have to cut a branch I'm on.

Small crispy dead wood generally doesn't tear and can be taken in one piece if you cut fast enough.

Yes yes yes, thank you 😊 🙏 I bought a 30 gallon shantung maple and had the nursery plant it (I was scared to screw something up) but they didn't pull any dirt away from the flare. I recently did that and found 3 roots that were digging into the tree already and it's only about 3 inches around. Got those cut off and put the mulch and dirt back carefully to avoid covering the flare. I hope it helps my little tree in the long run. I do think it's suffering from a bit of late frost, but the roots would have most assuredly caused an issue in a few years. Thanks for the video!

Found this wonderful video because I was looking for a picture of Rooti for a discussion of adventitious roots. It is going at the top of my "to share" list! I know this is for industry workers and arborists. I am trying to develop recommendations for homeowners and what, if anything they can to fix minor root problems themselves, if not too complex or long term. Also, what can they do to get their landscapers to start reversing this process. Is there any situation where it can be done gradually? People love their landscaping crews and don't like to criticize or tell them what to do. I am trying to get my city to tell homeowners to stop overmulching Right of Way trees. Thanks Daniel! You are always an inspiration to me.
