Some outports were 100% destroyed by a tsunami and nobody came to help. there was also that.
I will not deepen anymore into Newfoundland history...Terra Nova...because of the Italian branch of clothing stores called this name.. who sell counterfeit products and is radiobroadcasted by gangsters and criminals in general. Year 2023/24.
Remember it was so poor I see rats 🐀 with tears in there eyes 👀. 😢😢
no persons of colour in this video..I am shocked..is this the Patriarchy? ...CBC please help..shut down this video...no diversity...been to macallum...seen all these places...now destroyed..PROGRESS IS A PROCESS OF LOSS..remember that....
lack of diversity here..I am triggered....no trans? shocking....
Basically some is true , Most is lies .
As a half Newf, Half Italian. Just came back from the Rock to the Mainland. This place has my heart and heritage . The people are Gold. I love this place and I will die here.
The English and French committed most of these horrific acts..not a Newfoundlander...
To go out on the ice for seals was a very dangerous job..one of the worst
Born there. I joined the Foreign Legion and served mostly in the Jungles or North Africa. I retired in Nfld with a Beer Saloon/where house. Not too shabby I say b'ys
One thing that is wrong is that the Beothuk were not the only native tribes on the island
Europeans brought death, despair and destruction everywhere they went.
The hardest but kindest ppl on earth back then anyway!!
I love the history Newfoundland.
What a good watch this was . I love Newfoundland I was born here and I’ll stay here. There’s no other place like it for me 🙂
There is something enchanted and harsh about this island fortress. It reminds me of the coast of Wales in a way. I will come here to visit with my next partner, this is the goal.
What a good watch. I love Newfoundland I was born here and I will stay here 🙂
Newfoundland people's are a hardy people. they knew how to feed their children, even if it was beans and dumplings, plus cod fish.
Thanks for the video I have a fishing trip planned there and CANNOT WAIT.
Let's play "how long until the indigenous people of the island are even mentioned in this video?" I'm a third of the way into it now and nope. Apparently the island was completely untouched until Europeans got there.
i mean they taught us the tragedies of the indigenous on the island in school, i havent forgotten. what you see in the news is a distraction
I live here and I must add a detail they forgot. The damn weather sucks bad
It's the international boats that destroyed our fishery. I wish we could put up a force field and keep everyone out. By land or sea.
Hello from Halifax, Nova Scotia! Love the stories. ☺
I live in Newfoundland and from here
Old World Order!!!
Lifesaver, need to create presentation about history of newfoundland
Watching these video makes me miss home in Central N.F.L.D.
N.F.L.D the place of my birth. Home Sweet Home.
my Mon Was born in St John’s and my self in 1937
It was extermination, not decimation.
Thank you very much for posting this.
I was station at that American Naval base 1969-71. I enjoy being there
I'd love to know where the filmmakers got the detail that "23 of Guy's colonists" died in the winter of 1612-1613 at Cupids. Every account I've seen is based on Henry Crout's journal which only lists 8 deaths that winter.
incredible video. Haiti revolutionan and battle for newfoundlAND are seldomly taught tales
Any history about Newfoundland and Labrador, home to two First Nation groups, the Mi'kmaq on Newfoundland island, and the Innu, living in central and northern Labrador, can hardly be complete.
Did the French bring the Mikmaq to newfoundland to get rid of English and wipe out the Beothic natives.
The MicMac were settlers in Newfoundland from Nova Scotia- I think they likely came over in the time period they disappeared from Nova Scotia-after they were driven out of Dartmouth, NS around 1750. They were married to French colonists who were also driven out of NS- when they came to Newfoundland. DNA results showed that the majority of MicMac of Conne River who recently tested their MT DNA had European MTDNA -not aboriginal DNA-therefore showing no connection to Beothuk.

The Sea Give'ith and it Take'ith.
Nice little change of pace and perspective on history. Glad I watched.
RIP Shawnadithit!!!
Love the video but find it hard to understand the facts shared by the french fella because of the volume of the music. Had to stop and listen a couple of times to get it all.
Thanks for the info in the description, it's a life saver!
my home and native land, Wouldn't leave it for the world.
What's the economy like there now??

Great, but the music takes away by its intrusion.
I feel the music is spectacular personally
There was very little contact between Europeans and Beothuk. The only group that actively hunted them were Micmac who had been brought to NL by the French. They took heads, but also women, so the Beothuk blood is not entirely dead.
I think you are wrong as all people taken died very soon after. There are no Beothuck alive today.
I agree with MySnaz, to an extent. Having the blood of a Beothuk does not make one Beothuk. To be Indigenous is to practice the culture and be a part of an Indigenous community, and the Beothuk culture and community has long been archived but no longer practiced. If Mi'kmaq people took Beothuk women and those women bore children, those children were taught the Mi'kmaq culture. It is a colonial notion to believe in blood quantum; it does not exist in Indigenous cultures as far as I know. -A Cree and Nakoda woman's opinion.
@@katiebird1980 Tell that to EVERY single person on the planet who may have one drop of indigenous blood somewhere in their family tree. They are the first ones to line up for benefits.
@@LaDeeDaLaDeeDa man no kidding. My great grandma was full black feet Indian which technically makes me 1/8. But I have absolutely no link to indigenous people and never practice any of their traditions or culture. And even though I technically qualify for benefits i would be a complete fraud if I were to ever pursue any. It's hilarious that a bunch of blue eyed casino owners are acting like they lived some struggle because their great great grandparents they never met were indigenous !
The mt DNA study done by Stephen Carr showed no connection between the Beothuk and the MicMac-mostly because most of the older MicMac DNA samples were European- likely french colonialists. I discovered that some of the MicMac lived with my Irish Ancestors in Placentia Bay- of course they shared religion. They both provided provisions and guides for James Howley. They also set up the postal service to central Newfoundland together. My relative was Philip Browne. The MicMac had strong connections with both the French and Irish in Newfoundland. They were not isolated from other communities as the Beothuk were. The Beothuk refused to use guns. The Micmac used guns through their history.
I'm a Newfoundlander. I'm 41 years old. my responsibility tells me a horrible crime against nature took place here. in my very home. We are responsible for the loss of an entire race. A benevolent people. May they ever be remembered in our flag and hearts for all future generations. We can never right this wrong.
Who is "we?" You weren't even alive.
Very interesting. James Winters is correct, however I don't feel guilty about some of the violent past because I had nothing to do with it. It's unfortunate but that's the way it was in just about every part of the world at some time.
Thank you for this, the island has allot of insterating facts and lost history
The fact that you are using the specific word for the Beothuk people is great, however, referring to them as Indian is not. Wish you could change that?
No.
I have removed abusive and profane comments as is my right.
Nflds do have filthy mouths thank you.
