I play bass and write music in prog/psych band La Horsa Bianca, co-host Jethro Tull-related podcast Vernacular Verbose and do various other stuff, too.
This is my “serious” channel for bass transcriptions and other educational content, also to keep copyrighted material off my personal channel The Scary Moosh. We'll see how it goes.

Several things to say about this one:
1) At first, I just wanted to learn this part for my own practice, rather than something intended for the channel. But I quickly found that of all the transcriptions I could find, there were none I agreed with.
2) Don’t get me wrong: a lot what Shuggy played here feels very improvised, so it’s perfectly okay for anyone to put their own spin on the licks if they play it - especially when covering it in a performance.
3) I, however, never intend to perform it in public. I only set out to learn something from it, and if I truly want to get a glimpse of the way Shuggy was thinking, I better try and play it as close as possible. So I had to take all the transcriptions there were and verify them against what I thought was happening, changing a lot of small and not so small details, ultimately creating a transcription of my own. So now there's one more.
4) You may still disagree with how I interpreted the part, it's okay. I used two different masters and the isolated rhythm section from Hot Rats Sessions to try and zero in on some of the parts I wasn't sure about, but YMMV.
5) Also, there’s still a bunch of my own mannerisms in the way I articulate some of the notes, that’s inescapable.
6) I oscillated a lot between pick and fingers as I was learning the piece. I’m a pick player most of the time, but I decided to keep both versions.
7) There’s still war in Ukraine. I still can’t go home. Still recording in a friend’s kitchen in a different city.
With thanks and acknowledgments to:
John Fair and his transcription as published on Ultimate Guitar;
Chris & Kibble and their transcription as published on Songsterr;
Gustavo Perez and his UA-cam cover and transcription;
Andrew Brahin who helped me get through a tight spot here.

🇺🇦 Donation info below I had learned this song back when we covered it with Joey over on Vernacular Verbose (ua-cam.com/video/oz-NiHeRszY/v-deo.html). After I started this dedicated bass channel, I meant to transcribe the part one day, but had never got around to it. Fast-forward to now, when, driven away from home but recently reunited with my bass, I decided to take my mind off war for an aft...

The bass part John Glascock played on this track is crazy fun! I apologize for the webcam focus on this one, the webcam doesn't seem to like things that aren't people. I'll use something else next time. Many thanks to Amedeo S for teaching me how he makes his tab animation because it's the best. Here's Amedeo's channel: ua-cam.com/users/AmeKeSpacca I talk on a Tull podcast: ua-cam.com/channels/...
This video and song completely changed how I play bass, thank you so much. I’d love to see a bass tab for son of Mr. Green genes
Killer job on this!
Hot rats full album when ? This is on point. Great job.
This is unreal, way to go
Absolutely sublime.
I LOVE YOUR BASS SO MUCH OH MY GOD
here's to DIY paint jobs 🤘
An intelligent and thoughtful analysis of the bass part of Otis in this topic. Much better than I've met before. Otherwise: "One of my favorite philosophical tenets is that people will agree with you only if they already agree with you. You do not change people's minds." “The most important thing to do in your life is to not interfere with somebody else’s life.” "Well . . . Information is not knowledge Knowledge is not wisdom Wisdom is not truth Truth is not beauty Beauty is not love Love is not music Music is THE BEST . . ." Frank Vincent Zappa Thank you so much for your honest work and good luck!
“A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance of unsuspecting musicians” - The Real Frank Zappa book 😃
Thank you brother, your FABULOUS!!!❤
Haha man, i tried learning this a year ago and couldnt figure it out, but this week i figured ill download the song, mix it so i can hear the bass, after working with it for a while i thought to myself: What if someone has uploaded a good tab on it and what do you know! Thank you so much for this man, it helped me immensely and i think you got it 99% right if not 100!
And to think Shuggie Otis was 16 when Zappa had him record the original bass line. Zappa had such a good eye for talent.
gracias hermano!! te pasaste!!
Zappa was a composer at heart and literally started as one. That kind of knowledge of music translated really way to bass pieces in his music.
Amazing work. Thank you!
Thank You ! & Good Luck In All Your Endeavors...
Great Cover ! Please post more Zappa ! it’s sad to see how little Zappa covers and tabs are on UA-cam.
Awesome ! Pls more from Frank..good stuff
This is great and must have been a ton of work! Thank you and subscribed!
