Dragonfly 28 Sport trimaran sailing with Code 0 on a beautiful Spring afternoon.
For my taste the heads are too often close to the boom , i would propose helmets in these conditions.
Cooking
As a motoryacht fan, this is the first sailing vessel I'd like to learn the ropes of.
Thank you and yes we still had a reef in the mainsail, after a big squall as we rounded the Needles
Second Nature!

Are folding amas built rugged enough for ocean crossings in rough seas?
@@chrisdaniel1339 thanks for your comment. Lots of Dragonfly trimarans have made ocean crossings. Dragonfly 32 and larger are CE Category A boats

very good boat very good and cool and i love it so much omg
Thanks for watching, and glad you like it. Check out our other videos of it sailing fast too
Beautiful impec very nice my Dreams
Dragonfly 25 is so much fun, and easy to sail fast - even solo

I’m curious what are the two lines on the tiller attached to the back of the boat?
It's just a length of shock-cord to steady the tiller while I deploy the Code 0, hoist the kite etc. I usually flick it off once back on the helm
@@DragonflyTrimarans-UK thank you. I used dual long tillers on a Tri I had during races. There was enough friction from bot tillers laying down the helm remained steady during maneauvers
This is why I love my tri. Flat out - by both measures.
OMG 😳
Thanks for watching. Dragonfly trimarans are extremely sea-worthy, and have crossed oceans, and even circumnavigated. That part of the race course is open to the Atlantic, and it was rougher earlier with up to 30 kts. We gybe close inshore there to keep clear of the tidal overfalls, so we can sail faster.
Where can we get one in UK near Lymington??? How much pls❤❤❤👍👍🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi Paul, the boat in the video is based in Hamble and I'd be delighted to show you around. Dragonfly trimarans are built to order in Denmark, and over 100 of this model have been built to date. Please drop an email to info@multihullsolutions.co.uk or call 01243 370707 so we can arrange to meet
That flag should not be flown on it's own. Mike indicates to other vessels "I am stopped". I can't tell whether Sierra is also being flown which would be appropriate for this scenario since both Mike and Sierra together indicates "I am undergoing speed trials".
Thanks for your comment. 'M' was the designated class flag for the Multihulls, in this annual race round the Isle of Wight (UK) with a fleet of nearly 1,000 boats.
Whats the smallest tri that could sail open ocean single handed? (not planning anything crazy, dont know anything about sailing lol) Just curious...
By 'open ocean sailing' do you mean crossing oceans? If so, there's a great difference between what is possible and what would be sensible for most of us. The skills and experience of the sailor would have a great influence. Although Dragonfly 25 was designed as a weekend cruiser & racer, but it is a very sea-worthy boat. However we'd recommend one of our larger models for comfortable ocean sailing.
Speed?
Thanks for watching. Max GPS speed was 15.8kts, in F4 breeze. This boat was also winner of Round the Island Race 2023, in the multihull category
I no longer dream of women. I dream to be in a boat like That, and this fast . Very beautiful.thank you.
Thanks for the video. Looks like a great boat to sail. What size asym were you flying in this race? Looks smaller than the 60m2 specified in Dragonfly brochure. Noticed the asym sheets lead inside the side stays(shrouds), is this the norm or was this because the angles were hotter in this race conditions? Thanks again for the video.... hoping for more of such videos to come.
Thanks for watching and well spotted - that asymmetric spinnaker is smaller and flatter than the factory one, but big enough that day! Spi sheets are usually led inboard, due to wide beam and relatively low apparent wind angle at speed
Thanks for taking time to reply. Much appreciated. Happy sailing! @@DragonflyTrimarans-UK
Now that's sailing. No engine and background music noise; just the sound of the wind and sail, and water brushing against the hull.
Thanks for watching, and glad you enjoyed it.
I could listen too that humming all day long ❤
Right ? I was thinking this humming was in my head, only sailed a dragonfly once but gosh what an experience...
These guys have skills!
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it. That was such a fun day
It's not even 0.5 meters and the boat is diving in the water. It would be impossible to go sailing on a gale.
Thanks for watching, but where’s the diving in that video? There’s some spray as the leeward bow cuts through the waves we overtook, but that’s about it and we stayed pretty dry. Waves were much bigger than 0.5m round the back of the island. However this clip is gybing inshore of the tidal overfalls off St Cats, where it was flatter. If it was windier, we’d have put another reef in, and taken the spinnaker down.
damn good sailing ,, I was wondering if i can use the asymmetrical spinnaker in those conditions
Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. A Dragonfly is incredibly stable and responsive, as well as fast. Therefore the spi is easy to fly, although we recommend building experience before flying it in stronger winds
It's certainly shifting, must be quite an exciting time.
Hi Geoff, it is exciting to sail at these speeds, but as you can see a Dragonfly is also very responsive and remarkably dry too

Looks quick and beautiful
Thanks. We were sailing at wind speed with the gennaker, and that's always fun
I like the tiller tamer. Does it come standard with the boat? Or is it aftermarket? If its aftermarket, who makes the device?
it’s simply a length of shock cord, hooked over the tiller extension mount.
Suggestion/question : where’s the kill cord for that engine? Do you think would be a good idea when “sailing” solo that, after any reverse manouvre is done, have a killcord , while motoring trough the harbour… a kill cord extended and dunken to transom with a floaty at the end… at least if you fall, you have hope to stop your vessel? Just wondering, everytime I see an engine on a boat… is there someone there 100% or not?
Hi Stefano, thanks for your comment and it's an interesting idea. However as you can see, there is no need to leave the DF 25 cockpit until the boat is unfolded. At this point it is an incredibly stable platform almost 6m wide, so the risk of falling is much lower than on some boats
Thanks for your comment. Dragonfly wings are supported by waterstays, which triangulate the wing and therefore remove bending loads in the Swing Wing mounts while sailing. These dyeform wires (with white plastic covers), run from low down on the centre hull to the outboard end of the wings, and are visible on the video.
Thanks for watching, and great to hear you enjoyed it
Fast, beautiful sailing. Btw, I broke my arm by handling a mainsheet like that. I more than broke it. I shattered it into pieces. Please be careful.
Sorry to hear about your injury, and hope you've made a full recovery. Thanks for your comments, and I agree no-one should stand in the way of the sheet during a gybe. It may be hard to see clearly in the video, but we pull the mainsheet falls aft mid-gybe, to flatten the sail and initiate an earlier (and therefore softer) gybe. The sheet pulls away from the helm as it loads up again, not towards anyone. When sailing with more crew (or when cruising), the mainsheet trimmer can sheet in pre-gybe for the same effect, then ease again when the sail crosses
@@DragonflyTrimarans-UK Thanks. It was over 40 years ago, so my arm did mend. It's not completely straight or as long as the other one, but it didn't stop me sailing. To be fair, my mainsheet had a little more slack than yours, so it was 100% my own fault. But I was concerned that others would see the way that you gybed, but not see the danger. Far safer to haul in on the tail of the sheet and let it out to absorb the shock.
WOW! Absolutely smokin'! BEAUTIFUL!
thanks for watching, and glad you enjoyed it
El 28 S, seria el mio....si tuviera $$$$$
If you like Dragonfly 28 S (Sport), you should try the new DF 28 Performance - that is another step up thanks to the new wave-piercing float design. DF 28 was winner of the Round the Island race 2023 (multihull class), as shown in the race video on our channel 👍
Round the Island race video is here: ua-cam.com/video/XwXGIqm8qjM/v-deo.html
Great! although just one camera position great!
Thanks for watching. We wanted to illustrate how the boat moves in the waves, to give a taste of sailing the boat. A continuous shot with 'horizon lock' also shows we haven't edited out any 'gnarly' bits
I’d love to see similar footage of the larger dragonfly designs. We are very interested in the 40.
Hi Craig, thanks for watching. There are some clips of DF 40 Ultimate during the same race on this highlight video: ua-cam.com/video/XwXGIqm8qjM/v-deo.html If you'd drop me an email at info@multihullsolutions.co.uk I would be pleased to send you other links too.
Brilliant thank you
You're very welcome
Very steady and fast. I wonder how long it would take from the UK to say outside of Mexico!?
Thanks for your comment, but I'd recommend a larger Dragonfly than this trailerable DF 25 for that trip. Dragonfly 40 would be a joy for long-range cruising.
Holy smokes wtg
Thanks Stuart, this boat's a LOT of fun to sail
Love these sailboats !!! GG Rebimik
Thank you, and we're with you there
The Speed !!! GG Rebimik
Thanks, that was such a fun sail 👍
What kind of speed were you doing? (Never mind - just saw the comment above...) And ditto the comment about how dry you looked! The sea state was lumpy and I would've expected a lot more water in the cockpit. And it looked like you had finger tip control. Very impressive.
Thanks for watching. The latest Dragonfly trimarans are remarkably dry for such fast boats, thanks to clever design and over 55 years experience. All the recent UK magazine tests have commented on this too
That looks like a lot of fun.. Slick Tri too ⚡🤟
It certainly was fun, and a great race for Dragonfly. Our Dragonfly 28 not only won the multihull class 🏆 but was 15th fastest out of all 1,100+ entries on elapsed time.
smokin!
🔥
Well balanced boat
Thanks for watching. A trimaran is naturally balanced. As a Dragonfly heels (to about 10 degrees max), the leeward hull is immersed deeper, so the centre of drag moves outboard to remain aligned below the centre of effort of the rig. Therefore the helm remains light, and the boat is agile and responsive.
