Hi, I'm Col. My partner Deb and I live in Liverpool, but have for many years now enjoyed visiting #Scotland and immersing ourselves in its incredible #scenery. I've recently started making films of the locations we visit and hoped they might just be worth sharing. In these films, the scenery is the star, so I rarely appear in them. The emphasis is on #serenity, so I use captions and #soothing music to provide the narrative and information, rather than speaking, for now, anyway. There is little action, just the #landscapes really, so hopefully they are #relaxing short bursts of #wellbeing material for anyone trying to look after their #mentalhealth, possibly as an aid to sleep. That's the aim anyway. I hope you enjoy the films.

The Cowal Peninsular is an area of Argyll in Scotland, flanked by Loch Long on one side and Loch Fyne on the other. There are 3 ‘arms’ to Cowal, meaning it is not just one peninsula, but 3, with Cowal East, which includes Dunoon on one side and Cowal West which includes Colintraive and Tighnabruaich on the other, each on a separate ‘arm’, but both in Cowal West. The Isle of Bute fits snugly between the two arms of Cowal West.
There is a good road (A886) to Colintraive, however, we chose to take the more scenic single track coastal road (B8000) down Loch Fyne. While this was slower, the road itself is ok and was very beautiful at this time of year, with the bluebells lining many sections.
We initially missed the junction for Old Castle Lachlan, which we had intended to visit, so had to go back on another day to film that. Fortunately, it’s not far down the road. It was definitely worth the effort to see the castle, which is possibly the most historically significant I have seen, since its owner the Chief of Clan Maclachlan was killed at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, having backed Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, arguably the most significant event in Scottish history, which ended the Jacobite cause and led to the suppression of Scottish clans and culture. There is a report that a Government warship sailed up Loch Fyne soon after the battle and bombarded the castle and some of the damaged walls would appear to support that. The castle was abandoned immediately after Culloden and never inhabited again. The Maclachlans were allowed to keep their lands after the Duke of Argyll intervened on their behalf after the battle. Thus, another Castle Lachlan, a townhouse, was built nearby in 1790 by the Maclachlans and is still inhabited today. The Old Castle represents a moment frozen in time when the fabric of the Scottish nation changed to this day. Links to articles about the castle below.

We stopped at Otter Ferry to take in some views of Loch Fyne, but were too early for the Oystercatcher pub, which wasn’t open yet.
Further along the road is a crossroads, right to Portavadie, left to Tighnabruaich and straight on to Ardlamont Point at the end of this ‘arm’. We went to Portavadie, the harbour from where the ferry to Tarbert on Kintyre sails, but there wasn’t much to see, though we’d love to get that ferry some time. We decided to try to get to the end of the peninsula at Ardlamont Point, but didn’t find a way to that, however, we had read about a beach in an IG post from Chris Paul Lawler and stopped at Kilbride Farm, then took a 20 min walk to Kilbride Bay to the stunning white sand beach with spectacular views out to the Isle of Arran. Unfortunately, the tide was a long way out so we didn’t get the best view of the turquoise water, but the beach was stunning and sparsely populated, so well worth a visit.
We then went to Tighnabruaich, which is a lovely little village, looking out onto the Isle of Bute, separated only by the narrow Kyles of Bute channel.
Outside Tighnabruaich there are spectacular, elevated views down onto the village and Bute. There is also a public work of art ‘The Ark’ by David Blair, a comment on climate change and the impact of rising sea levels. Looking out to sea, from the hill it is quite easy to imagine the sea filling the bay and then sailing off in the Arc. It is a powerful statement and beautifully constructed wooden frame made from European larch.
I hope you enjoy the film.

Hi! Excellent footage my friend. Great flight + 4 Kind regards.
@@TanyaDelaVida thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. 😀
Beautiful video! And the gentle music was a perfect accompaniment. I am also thinking to take this trip - did you use the Turus Mara ferry company since you started in Oban (which is what I plan to do)? Or another company? And did the boat actually pull up to the metal walkway on Lunga that you showed? If not, how did you get from the boat to the beach there? Thanks so much for creating such a serene AND informative video!
@@elizabethwu8668 thank you for your lovely comment. I’m pleased you enjoyed the video. We used Staffa Tours and the CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull was included as part of the ticket. Their tour boat then went from Tobermory on Mull. They also sail from Fionnphort on Mull which is much closer to Staffa, so you may get to spend more time on the islands if your trip goes from there. The journey from Craignure to Fionnphort also has nicer scenery than to Tobermory in my view and you are near the Isle of Iona there if you wanted to visit there too (recommended). The puffins are there between May and August, so that is the best time to visit. At Lunga, there was a floating gangway waiting at the island and the tour team collected that and helped passengers use that to get onto the island. It is still quite difficult to get on and off the island, though, as the way to the path is rocky and uneven. I hope if you go there, that you enjoy your trip as much as we did. 😀
Awesome video 👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Beautiful scenery and great that you captured the bird of prey activity.
@@Catherine-tg4es thanks mum. Yes that appeared completely out of the blue. xx
So beautfiul there. Have been there this May during my hike on the Rob Roy Way. Thx for sharing. Greetings from Poland.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and hope it brought back some nice memories of your trip. 😀
@@cols_serenescapes It did bring back a lot of good memories. Just like Robert Burns, I left my heart in the Highlands.
Stunning footage 😊 looks a real treat to walk about there. I must visit sometine. Gave you a sub my friend number 61 👍👍
@@sneakysweeno thank you. It’s a magical place. Sub much appreciated. 😀
Absolutely breathtaking. A real serenescape.
@@Catherine-r8r Thanks mum. Glad you liked it.
Absolutely enchanting! The Birks of Aberfeldy is such a beautiful spot, and it’s amazing to see the landscapes that inspired Robert Burns. Thank you friend for sharing this stunning journey through nature’s wonders!Big Like! We join your channel! ❤

Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. A place id like to visit one day. Looks so peaceful 😊👍
@@sneakysweeno thanks for watching. Peaceful it is and there’s also the whole north and west of the island which we didn’t get to. 😀

Wonderful video. What a fantastic place to visit. Great footage of the castle. Most enjoyable video. Thank you. 😊❤
@@ladyintheskyuk thank you LF. Drone flight was a bit of a mess, actually . I flew it perfectly before realising I hadn’t pressed record 😵 It all went a bit awry after that, but looks ok in the edit I hope. We had a great day. Nice walk. 😀
Lovely journey. I once spent a wonderful holiday in Oban and on the isles of Mull and Iona...
@@TheJessierb thank you. We did the same a couple of years ago, but weather was atrocious. A more successful visit in recent times is the subject of the video about Staffa and The Treshnish Isles on the channel if that might interest you. 😀

My ancestors are the McMillans of CARA, taken off the island around 1930, the only house on the island was theirs .. must have been a long winter. Gail Drummond -Millan
Thank you for this fascinating comment, Gail. We didn’t seem to be able to visit Cara on the day, but would love to one day. Do you have a link to some info on your ancestors? I couldn’t find anything in a quick google search just now. One of my other videos, the North Knapdale film includes a link to an article about the village of Arichonan and the resistance to the clearance of the residents, one of whom was Neil Macmillan, whose carved name in a stone in his dwelling can be seen today, though we didn’t find that on our visit.
Love it!
So cool 😁👍 loved the drone footage would be awesome flying there 😊👍
Thank you for your kind comment. I was pleased to get the footage in the windy conditions. Would be nice to go back on a calmer day.
Lovely footage of this beautiful place 😍 great video 👍
Thank you for this lovely comment.
Lovely video 👍 bit of a rough boat trip. Fantastic footage 👏
Many thanks LF. Glad you liked it. I was pleased with the twin beaches drone flight given the windy conditions.
Bute is one of my favourite places and I just randomly came across your video after typing it into UA-cam's search box. I'm very glad I did because you have created a visual feast for the eyes and I'm in love with your work. The name of your channel is as perfect as the video and you've gained a new subscriber. Anyway, enough embarrassing praise from me; I'm off to look at the other vids you've uploaded.🙂
@@iankogneeto4882 thank you for this lovely comment. We were very lucky with the weather that day and it really showed Bute off at its best. Thank you for subscribing. Hope you enjoy the other films and the ones coming up. 🙂
You captured it beautifully 😊 such a stunning place and fantastic capture of the deer 🦌

Fabulous scenery 👌 Beautifully captured 👌 ❤
Thank you for the kind comment. Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Wow. I have yet to do this road and yet to fly the beauty. Fabulous footage 👌 Been passed it twice this year, and the weather has been shocking 😲 lovely video and flying ❤
Thank you for your lovely comment. I’ve watched the amazing flying in your films and subscribed. If you think I’ve flown well, then I’m absolutely delighted with that. I loved this drive, but it can get busy these days, so I recommend an early start.
Again a beautiful video. Love it. I agree that the climb was worth that fantastic view.
Thanks mum. We really enjoyed the day after we made it back down! The hike up the hill was tough, the weather much warmer than it looks in the film. xx
This is a lovely video Serenescapes, thanks for sharing, we're hoping to get up to Scotland next year for some adventuring and looking for videos for inspiration, we've subscribed, thanks for sharing !
@@HotubHobos thank you for your lovely comment and for subscribing. If it’s your first time visiting Scotland, Glencoe, (with Ballachulish and Kinlochleven, the place in the video close by) is a good starting point. Glad you enjoyed the film and hope you like the next ones up on the channel. Much appreciated.
The weather was mixed but not too bad generally, just windy, which I think is common on the Moray Coast. So no drone footage in this one. Thanks for the lovely comments, mum. xx
Even the awful weather cannot disguise the beauty of Scotland. Well done for your perseverance. The light is so different from the other videos but you have captured true Scottish weather! I was born and raised in Scotland but I never knew very much about these places outside of the city. I have learned so much. Thank you.
I find these old slate landscapes quite fascinating since I learned about them through your videos. The contrast between the remains of the buildings being reclaimed by nature and the pretty, very tidy village and church is remarkable. The view from the bridge is magnificent and awe inspiring. I love it all.
Thanks mum. Glad you’re enjoying them. xx
I think this is your best yet. You have really captured the magnificent majesty of Staff and Fingal's Cave. Those close ups of the puffins are fantastic and to catch the fish in the mouth of a feeding adult is wonderful. Now this REALLY will entice people to go there.
Thanks mum. You're very kind. Still being my biggest cheerleader even at my age! Great to hear that you think this film has turned out well. The amazing location obviously makes for an interesting subject.
What a beautiful walk! Love the squelching! The heron makes a beautiful study. Do you know that the collective for herons is a ‘ Siege’?
@@Catherine-tg4es No, I didn’t know that. Thank you. I like an unusual collective noun. 😄
Beautiful!
Beautiful. Love the early views of the Isle of Arran where you ca see the full length of the ‘Sleeping Warrior’.
Thanks Catherine. Yes some fabulous views of the sleeping warrior from Bute, especially on a glorious day like we were fortunate enough to get on that occasion.
Wow! Magnificent and hauntingly beautiful location. The video shows the textures to perfection and the water pools so clear. You have captured this fascinating island and its history so well. It is a very emotional experience.
Thank you very much. It’s an amazing place. 😃
Lovely video of this awe inspiring scenery. I hope to do this soon and to be lucky enough to come across a stag. Now that is awesome!
Thank you! It’s a fabulous drive.
Love this video. It is so beautiful and informative. Love the map too. It has made me understand why I love Arran so much and given me excellent guidance for future visits.
Thank you! Hope you manage to get back soon.
Looks absolutely glorious! Makes me want to go there and the drone footage looks great. Very nicely done.
Thanks Ciaran. Yes drone was better on this one, I think. It’s a great drive.
