I've been obsessed lately with pop tunes from that early Toto era. I believe this was written by members of Toto and recorded by Boz Scaggs.

Here's something that I don't practice enough, but I think it's helpful for seeing a key over the entire fretboard. PDF: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/zipvkn7ndl5l3b8ki3nlp/G-major-octave-displacement.pdf?rlkey=e0x78r0qxb02bm845twjqfj5n&st=7hefoqnd&dl=0

Here is a failed attempt to play in the style of Jim Hall. I think his version of this tune MUST be the way Cole Porter intended it to be sung/played.

Some REALLY basic stuff here - more fretboard awareness. Getting different sounds from the usual group of notes.
3 notes per string, octave displacement and other disconnected thoughts.

More fretboard awareness stuff. Please leave a comment to help me with that CAGED system question. Thanks! ...some sloppy playing in this video. Sorry about that.

I've been trying to get comfortable playing solo guitar. Every time I try playing an an actual solo chorus, I forget to leave space and play more chords/comp for myself. Obviously still a work in progress.

Another example of my inability to remember tunes. Not sure it's as much memory as it may be thinking too much. I need to trust my instincts.

Merry Cristmast
Beautiful tones coming out of your hands through that 135 (137 Premier?)...Merry Christmas
@@gtrbarbarian thanks so much! That guitar is actually a 1 pickup ES125. Hard to tell from that camera angle. I really appreciate the kind words. Merry Christmas to you, as well.
Very nice tune! Well played.
Interesting exercise. Break it down and explain what you are exactly doing please...🤔
Thanks for asking. It's really a G major scale. I play the first note on the 6th string, then notes 2 and 3 up an octave. Notss 4 and 5 are Back in the lower octave. That pattern continues. I think the PDF is correct, and it should match what i played. Cheers!
@@ScottM65 Thanks! I'll look it over.
Very pretty tune and well played. Beautiful guitar!
SMOOTH! Super nice job. Beautiful guitar. Much enjoyed...now subbed.
Thanks! Glad you like it. Cheers!
Smooth, lyrical.
Thanks so much!
So well played! I really enjoyed it!
Thank you! That's so nice to hear.
Ed Bickert is back 😊
Thanks for the kind words. Sure can’t say I deserve that, but it’s much appreciated.
Lovely Stuff.👌
Thanks!
Good feel and voicings, Is your guitar a Gibson 335 model?
@@lowcountrystrings thanks for the kind words. Yes, it’s a standard ES335. Just a few years old.
Always loved this song. Great rendition
Thank you so much. Some days this is my favorite song, ever!
Very nice!!!
Thank you!
@@ScottM65 Absolutely!!!
nice playing
Thanks! I really apprciate it.
Nice tone!
Thanks. Glad you like it. It's A Henriksen jazz amp 10 going direct out to the interface.
What interval is that B-bop note?
@@moeb4348 thanks for asking! I’m thinking the key of G major. The note is a passing tone between 5 & 6. So I suppose you could call it a minor 6th from the root. That Same note over the five chord is a flat nine between the root and 9 of that V chord. The more common “bebop note” over the V is a passing tone between its root and flat 7. In the tonal center/key of G, it would be a #4 (or flat 5, if you prefer). Not sure the interval label is as useful as the way it sits as a passing tone in the line construction. This video explains the concept (I hope). ua-cam.com/video/3EkSqwWuBxg/v-deo.htmlsi=SsPcj27Pj8ozOOlx
@@ScottM65 Thanks. That's what I gathered after watching a few times and playing along. It's a very cool note and works well with the B-bop progression. When I play it, it makes me sound like I really know how to solo in jazz! Even though, I am just a beginner. Great post.
I'm so glad you liked it. We're all students. I know I am.
wow🥰😍🌺🌝🌠..... i love it!!!
Thoughtful idea
Great control of the melody, and the comping is just a soft, sudden and stylistic addition to an already pretty solid chart. Keep up the good work dude!
Appreciate it! I wish I could remember to just stop with the lines and play a couple of chords to allow some space/breath. Comping for myself is not something I have ever done well. …a work in progress, I guess.
So cool. The lap steel looks pretty difficult to pick up, how was your first few times playing it? The intro was spot on by the way 🤙
Thanks for the kind words. So sorry I overlooked this comment. My Dad played pedal steel, so I have been around it all my life. Picking it up at age 55 was easier for me than it might have been for others because of that. I had never had any desire to learn because it was his thing. When he passed away, my whole attitude changed, and I have so many things I wish I could ask him about it, now.
Do you remember the name of that book by Warren Nunnes ,sir? By the way , I bumped into your channel by chance and it has great content. Your teaching way is enourmsly good, plain and usable. Thanks for your effort.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words. The book is called "Solo Improvisation Techniques for the Jazz Guitar." As I understand, It's been out of print for som time.
Very nice!! what amp are you using?
Thanks. If I recall correctly, I plugged directly into the interface, then into Logic with an amp simulator.
Stunning, really. Keep it up big man!
In G7 bebop I’m thinking Fmaj7. It serves no purpose for me to think diatonically for some reason…. I tried… But I’m thinking about starting points on Scale tones and Non Scale tones depending on where it’s going and the extension…. I may also be thinking altered bebop ST and NST which brings the b9 #9 nat7, #11 and b13…..back to what you’re saying about 2-5’a G7 works over the 2 because it’s a sub of Dm Aeolian not Dorian…..Barry said…. Which minor??? lol…
fantastic playing: just subscribed and best wishes....
Thanks for subscribing! I appreciate the kind words, too. Cheers!
Sweet and lovely. Merry Christmas to you ❤
Thank you!! Happy holidays!
such good energy, love it!

so cute

great tone!
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays!
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Sounds so full, and you play gracefully too.
Thanks for the kind words! Cheers!
Cool
Do you have the chords for this lovely tune? Trying to learn by ear but I'm not yet good enough to pick them out.
Sorry for the delay. Try this: www.swiss-jazz.ch/standards-jazz/WhatArDoing.pdf
quite nice. i forgot about this song, well done
Are you just improvising or does this piece have a name? It sounds so good
Thanks! Its actually called ‘what are you doing the rest of your life’ - a Michelle LeGrand tune. It probably sounds improvised, because I don’t play it very well. Especially the ending. Honestly, I’m trying to get better at quickly memorizing things. I played this from memory, but poorly.
Fantastic!
Great lesson, thanks.
Glad you liked it! I have not done enough videos demonstrating the concepts I cover, and I need to do this more. Thanks for the positive feedback!
nice lesson. Still learning so it helps a great deal. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I'm still learning, too, and I think we all are. Cheers, my friend!
I really enjoy your video lessons, keep sharing knowledge🙏🏼❤❤❤
Thank you! If you have anything you would like me to cover, please let me know. I certainly have weaknesses, but I’m happy to share what I can.
Great lesson, thanks.
Glad you liked it! I'm a lifelong student of guitar, and I hope sharing my perspective is helpful to some players.
lovely and so Jimmy.
Thanks! I'm certainly not much of a steel guitarist. That was my dad's thing, and he was VERY good. I started playing when he died about 2 1/2 years ago, and I really do enjoy it. Still can't make it sound smooth, like it should. Hope it gets better.
I find that much easier, as well. "Liked" & Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
That guitar sounds beautiful
Thank you! I am plugged into a DSM Humboldt Simplifier directly into the interface.
Very fine bebop playing, a good example what you can achieve with some serious studying and playing. Keep up your fine playing and teaching
Many thanks! I have about 6 different Charlie Parker blues tunes that I cant get out of my head. This one has been in the rotation. I love playing the heads, but soloing is not something I practice enough. I really appreciate your kind words.
Amazing
Thanks! I really appreciate it. I was just experimenting with the sound and did a clean and dirty version. Didn't really plan on recording a solo. I have been working on several Charlie Parker blues heads lately, but just the melody.
Brilliant....easy to follow... great tone...many thanks.
Thanks so much! I really do appreciate the kind words.
so glad ive found your channel, no nonsense short vids jam packed with what we need, cheers please keep doing things like this!
Thanks so much. Sorry I overlooked your comment. I will try to keep doing this. My idea was that others might learn from my mistakes. After playing for 40 some years, there are many things I believe I had made overly complicated, and it really set me back.
Indeed a very useful concept ,you're using Bb minor penta over G7 getting all 4 alterations and the 7th, very good
Glad you like it! I'm just hoping others can learn from my mistakes. ...the ones i've made by trying to make everything too complicated.
@@ScottM65 Complication is something relative, if you're really interested in outside playing, slowly you'll grasp the sound of tension and release.
this is a great musical idea. and i've heard it a lot in a lot of recordings. thank you sir!
Thank you for watching!
Great stuff!
Thanks so much.
