Hack My Van!

Приєднався 16 сер 2014
LIFE ON THE GROUND? REALLY?
I spent my entire adult life jetting around the world for work and play. Airlines, hotels, rental cars, and more airlines. Then, the pandemic forced me to rethink everything. To stay busy, I bought a Sprinter Van and put my engineering, aeronautics, software, design, machining, mechanical and electronics skills to the task of building the perfect Class B Motorhome. It worked.
The big lesson learned from not consulting and coaching executives for a year is that I can live a happy, simple life without it.
Now, my new job is designing and building the most beautiful, efficient, thoughtful, and friendly Class B Motorhomes on earth. Welcome to Hack My Van. The best accidental company I ever built!

Van Update #1, CoasterDad Comments, Kingda Ka Off Ride
Переглядів 2004 роки тому
Quite a lot going on in this video. First, your comments are addressed! Next, let's have a look at the bare bones Sprinter Van we'll be using to create the CoasterTrekMobile! I don't think that'll really be the name, but it's accurate :)
That's quite comical when an American attempts to speak metric, more specifically;- 80mm is more than three inches I think the material might be 8mm. The black material, Norco Red, was quotes as 150mm which is 6" thick and I'm thinking that it may well be 1.5mm. Sorry Buddy I couldn't take you seriously but the demo was sound . . . PS I wouldn't shave with a craft knife i.e. your idea of a 'razor blade'.
80 mil is NOT 80 mm. It's 0.080 inches. A "mil" is a thousandth of an inch for us Americans.
Haha! Too right, mate! I lived in Australia for a while. Long enough to where I'm never sure which side of a hallway to walk down anymore. I'm the guy who bumps into you at airports and theme parks! Celsius, metric, kilo (meters and grams) are all too sensible for me to grasp!
Seems nice... looks it's costing much more than others. Anyway, it would be super nice to have sound insulation on driver cabin than back of the van. Most of us will spend tremendous amount of hours in driving and that's where sound deadening will be needed the most. Driving 80 mph with tall van make significant noise and it is stressful, I searched to replace windshield with acoustic glass but wasn't available.
I agree that the cab and engine compartment noise needs to be addressed better in most van builds, but a lot of noise does come from the back of the van and finds its way up front as well. The whole thing is a big resonating metal box.
Thank you for showing all the details and how to get the sound deadening material to conform to the shape of the area that it's being applied! I did not find any links to the Norco products below your video.
What happen to this channel?
8 and 15 mm thick
There is a natural bow to the ceiling. Are those metal strips bowed along with the ceiling or did you make those straight?
Just 1/8" thick steel, so it conforms to the shape of the van.
That amount of butyl is overkill and heavy! Use it just until metal do not rezonate but use other ligther materials to insulatation (noise and temperature).
Noico isn't butyl, it's asphalt. Not good in heat because it off gasses and smells stinky. I'm using Dynamat and Kilmat, which are butyl and less toxic. I'm not overdoing it because I have to watch the weight.
Why is weight a big deal? It’s not like carrying 2 spare tires.
And he's doing the wheel wells with it which are already rigid.🤦♂️
@@JedTaneoReally!!?? Because every single ounce of anything added onto/into the van .. ADDS UP!!! Just like coins in a cookie jar!!
0:43 Sorry but that's not how the source of vibration come into contact, go outside the cabin and hit the wheel, the shock will vibrate the suspension spring and the whole cabin will resonate.
Best sound insulation video. You went overboard on the wheels
I agree. It's way beyond the point of diminished return. Just adding weight and reducing space.
@@AZRockRunner Really think so? I mean he did a 1 and 2 insulation but didn't need to double on the deadening material.
@@zelowatch30 this is why. a. there will be some cabinet cover up the wheel well, b. unlikely anyone sleeping in the back while the van in motion c. nobody knocking on the wheel well like he demo'd.
@@AZRockRunner Yep, honestly i don't think it will do much for road noise but I'm no expert. He'd have to do it on the exterior part of the wheel wells as well in order for it to really insulate road noise.
Hey nice framing!.. what series aluminum is that? 10 series 1 inch? Or larger? Thanks
1.5 inch framing from the nice folks at framingtech.com.
Really enjoyed your vid and tips. Gotta say tho, with those kilmat logos on the side there, you kind of blew your cover on the Noico love. Good video regardless.
haha! Started with kilmat, learned some things, moved on to Noico.
Wonderful vid ❤👍 Is there a vid where it shows the whole vehicle acousticed?
Wonderful vid ❤👍 Is there a vid where it shows the whole vehicle acousticed?
I just did my car doors and trunk! Great stuff and very friendly to handle! But why klimat vs noico?
1:48 Look at that bulkhead!!
What glue do you use to adhere the aluminum joists to the metal painted floor? Thanks in advance for your response.
From where did you order this system?
what size magnets did you use?
Slide out galley under master bed for an outdoor kitchen that frees space in the interior?
Could even have a swing out grill with retractable awning
Hearing? Hear-ability?
Just a idea,I also use PU expansion form spray into the body structure box frame. It's reduced sound transmission and improve structure strength also omitting heat transfer.
Congrats, good job!! Cheers from Spain!!
On the secondary fuel tap option, you must make sure the dealer programs the fuel gauge to option code "K51"(I believe) in order to read actual fuel level. The stock gauge indicator is estimated by the ECM based on engine performance. Don't run out of fuel with your space heater!!
I have no idea how you lifted the battery onto the table on your own? I've just had 600Ah of Lifepo4 cells delivered in 2 boxes. The young delivery driver was foolish enough to walk the 30 meters up my driveway carrying both boxes at the same time. He was regretting it by the time he got to my gate. I got him to put them onto of the bins so I didn't have to lift them off the floor. I'm 6ft4 and I carried the boxes into the house one at a time.
Did you ever do a sound test after the van walls and ceiling were completed?
how can it be a vanderwaal bound if its on the floor? woudnt that be a vanderfloor bond? ;)
Hhahaaa!
Thank you for this wonderful video. Please help by providing suggestions for where the aluminum tubing and vinyl can be sourced.
Awesome thank you
Hey, Will well saw this video. What made you choose vs using Frost King duct insulation as 1st layer (insulation and sound deadening) and then a layer of Thinsulate? Also, could you use Nico Red as a bridge barrier on beams that acre connected directly to the body of the van?
Wait how did you convince a dealership to give you their time like that from their mechanics wow? I need something like that for the FORD TRANSIT!
Keep up the good work man
Thank you! 🙏 I've never had so much fun working on a kooky project as I'm having building vans! We're starting our next van soon!
Amazing!
Why can't you just use the Noico red? How did the noico red to with reducing heat?
Noico Silver (or Noico Black) are designed to deaden sound. It's a much thicker material than Noico Red. Noico Red is closed cell foam, which deadens higher frequency sounds and it insulates any heat or cold from the metal of the vehicle (in this case the wheel well) from being conducted. For exterior walls, we use 1 layer of Noico Silver, 1 Layer of Noico Red, 1 Layer of Thinsulate, and one layer of Refletix. IMHO, that's the most effective insulation you can get in a 2 inch thick wall, and there's a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/zxQ4vZRXoqo/v-deo.html
@@HackMyVan thanks! All those layers definitely add up. Trying to be as intentional with the installation as possible to not overspend
Noico red is a completely different thing.
Really nice video content. I love the different techniques you use. Thanks for taking the time to share the information.
Love the use of magnets for a number of reasons. I will be employing the use of magnet for my ceiling as well. The challenge is I will have a marine fabric wrapped panel behind my cedar plank revealing the fabric with a 1 inch space between my cedar planks. Not connected with a tongue and groove. Thoughts?
Hmmm. Perhaps some kind of spacer? I’m thinking of those plastic spacers that go between tiles when you install them, but in this case, 1 inch and invisible. Or you might use pairs of magnets on the van and the plank such that they “snap” in place? A wonderful challenge. Hope you share how it goes, and thanks for watching :)
Will you show us how you made the roof!?! with the rare earth magnets!?! PLEASE!
Absolutely! We shot this video already. Just gotta get the editing done. It'll happen in the next few weeks, I promise! So be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon so you get the news when it drops! Thanks for watching :)
Your videos are awesome I don't know why you aren't getting more views and subscribers! But I know you will. I'm uplifting a 2021 Sprinter 144 and your videos are a huge help. MORE PLEASE!!!
Ikr
Thank you! I love building stuff. Fun Fact: I have another channel where I build backyard roller coasters: ua-cam.com/users/willpemble. Very silly and lots of fun. Enjoy!
Will, Great video! Thanks for posting this. I have a 2021 170 on order that will arrive in July, so I am in the design phase now, and material procurement as well. What kind of adhesive did you use for the aluminum floor joists? I totally agree with you about the removal of the paint. A bad idea and it exposes bare metal. The floor system isn't going any where! I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to more watching. Thanks. Greg
Hi Greg, Thanks for the kind words. I've never had so much fun on a project as I'm having with this one! Can't wait to see your project unfold. I use Liquid Nails HD Construction Adhesive. Here's a link - amzn.to/3uFr5vd. For projects on the exterior of the van, you'll want to consider marine products. There's a saying in the van biz. "Earthquake on the inside, Hurricane on the outside!" Build everything with that in mind :)
@@HackMyVan Will, Thank you for the information on the adhesive. A couple of more questions for you when you get a moment... 1. What thickness plywood are you using? Is it Birch or Maple? 2. What about the edge joints, I think I might want to biscuit them so they don't have any differential movement. 3. What kind of fasteners did you use to attach the plywood to the joists? I appreciate your help. Still waiting for my van to show up, but trying to get things ordered and designed in the meantime. Also, did you find that your aluminum supplier was less expensive than using actual 80/20? Thanks Will.
Hi Greg, I used #10 x 1 inch stainless sheet metal screws countersunk into the plywood, which is 1/2 inch maple. I added supplemental aluminum joists at the joints instead of biscuits (which would have worked just fine, I suspect. My thinking on that was getting biscuits centered on 1/2 inch ply can be tricky and might weaken the wood? Plus, more different kinds of glue... Gravity and the van walls are your best friends in all this. I seriously doubt your floor is going anywhere :)
@@HackMyVan Will, OK, thank you. This is good information. I agree the biscuits might be a bit tricky with the 1/2" plywood. I will just plan on screwing it to the joists. I may elect to double up the joists at a plywood panel edges to provide some additional edge support. Thank you for your help and for the videos, they are very helpful.
Salutations, Coaster Dad! I'm glad to see you doing well and are opening new doors and possibilities. I know 2020 has been one Blunderence of a year, but take it from Blunderman, sometimes tough times make the good times that much better, if we never give up. "Many of life's failures were people who gave up not realizing how close they were to success". Blunder On my friend!
