Axl founded the band (slash, duff and steven joined after several songs had been written) and he and izzy wrote the songs. Axl was a motivator to get the songs out, as izzy would cry because he wasn't sure what he wrote. Axl gets the most credit for dealing with drunks, ungrateful, drug addicts and insecure people.

Can’t deny that this line up was very strong as far as musicianship goes. Their jams and their takes on these songs were just phenomenal. I miss these years.

The era of GNR that lasted from 2011-2015 will forever be remembered as "The Mickey Mouse Era", because that's exactly who he sounded like during that era. I don't know why his performance took such a drastic drop during that timeframe, but for some reason or another it did. Axl had been labeled a lost cause, and rightfully so. It seemed that his voice was shredded beyond repair. Well, lo and behold, he sounds amazing again with Slash and Duff in the mix. I think that maybe he just couldn't get into performing anymore with this version of GNR. They had been basically downgraded to the status of a novelty act, doing residencies in Vegas and abroad, and Axl just wasn't feeling it anymore. But with Slash and Duff back in the mix, GNR is back on top of the music world, and the hottest band on the planet again for the first time in nearly 25 years...not to mention the fact that $3 million per gig is one hell of an incentive. I think he just found his passion again.

Yes, it sounds better. I don't know what caused it, perhaps he just wasn't bringing his a-game with this version of GNR. But check out the videos of his 2016 performances with Slash and Duff; especially the special show at the Troubadour in LA. He sounds 100 times better at Coachella than he does here, and sounds damn near as good as he did in his prime at the Troubadour show.
