The Hag in the Blanket (piping version)
Переглядів 6821 день тому
I learned this from the very cool piper Stew in Calgary. Thanks, Stew in Calgary.
Langstrom's Pony (secret crooked slip jig version)
Переглядів 9121 день тому
I got this one from Danu, they actually call it "Longstrom's pony". Longstrom is probably Langstrom's evil twin or something.
Quarter tone fret modified guitar
Переглядів 5421 день тому
one-off to show off my extremely silly guitar I just moved the top 5 frets in between the first 5, probably because there's something wrong with me
The Road to Lisdoonvorna (Reel in D)
Переглядів 6221 день тому
It actually is the same tune as the slide in Em everyone knows, although I like this version much better. The slide feels like it always comes out sounding like a Taylor Swift song when I play it
Old Hag You Have Killed Me

10/10 tune name, 10/10 tune, very cool

Sometimes also called the maid at the spinning wheel, depending on your opinion of the individual in question
The Green Groves of Erin
Переглядів 8328 днів тому
Very green, very groves, definitely Erin. Pretty sure it was required by law to record this tune if you were a band or musician in Ireland during the 80s.
Cleaning the Henhouse

I got this one from Jackie Daly and/or Angelina Carberry. I used to play it crooked. I might still play it crooked, too - I'm too lazy to try counting it

Very cool tune, sometimes played in E minor for some reason

The Yellow Wattle (cursed Willie Clancy version)
Переглядів 62Місяць тому
I learned this from Liam O'Brian like five years ago, it's taken me that long to feel like I can play it sort of properly
The Yellow Wattle (normal-ish version)
Переглядів 32Місяць тому
It's so syncopated I have a hard time actually getting through it without doing weird stuff so this is as normal as you're going to get

Nicely rendered! Very confident playing. It's a shame your girlfriend doesn't like banjo music and makes you practice whilst sitting in your car in the driveway. Get yourself a nice dog to ride shotgun and keep you company. I suggest a little border collie, maybe...

    Where/ how do you learn?

it's mostly through listening, I try to listen to a lot of music and pay close attention to what's going on when I do. I've accidentally learned almost all the tunes I know doing that.

From reading, I think that "hag" is maybe just another word for woman. Nowadays it has a negative connotation, but maybe that wasn't the case in the past in Ireland.

You have talent. But you need to either come up with some lyrics or team up with someone who can create good lyrics. Without lyrics that people can relate to, you wont get the attention you deserve.

Loving your work dude! Thanks to you I discover new tunes every couple of days :) I don't know many banjoists, new to Irish Trad. But you and the great Barney McKenna have something in common. What instrument is that? Is it an open-back? Because I really like the sound of it. It has that proper plunk, but that could be the player too.

That's very nice of you to say! That's an old open back short-scale Vega, which is a pretty plunky instrument
