The Hard Way
United States
Приєднався 23 вер 2015
Hello and welcome to The Hard Way! We are a husband and wife team who love to take on challenging projects. We have finished our skoolie conversion and are gearing up to take on homesteading in the Rocky Mountains! Upcoming projects include a 1980's International Semi and a 1930's Caterpillar Dozer. These projects are just the beginning! Come join us on our journey!
I'm Not A Logger, But I'll Do My Best!
Now that I've cut down the trees on our hillside, the real work begins. We need to clean up our mess. In this video I experiment with dragging the trees to our "landing" so that I can limb and cut to length all of the logs on flat ground. In the future I would like to get a set of chokers so that I can quicky grab multiple logs at once. This method sure beats limbing them up on the hillside and having to drag the limbs to one of our roads. This video was filmed in July 2024

I Bought a BURNED UP Telehandler

You can never have too many projects... right? When we first looked at our property, we drove past this burned out telehandler on our road. I ended up offering scrap price - $2,000- for this JCB 508-40. Now that I own it, the first step in this long project is to get the machine back to our place- which is no easy task. The machine weighs 25,000 pounds and we need to carefully move it down 1 mi...
Wildfire Prevention? Lets Start by Clearing Some Trees!

When we bought our property, the forest had almost completely overtaken the shop. We even had blackberry bushes growing in cracks in the concrete. Since then, we have been slowly reclaiming the area surrounding the shop and getting it better situated to survive a wildfire. Besides getting the building completely enclosed, the second most impactful work we can do is to clear the brush and trees ...

We cant wait to get power, as we are running a generator all day so that we have AC at the bus. We Need Water

It is July 2024 here on the homestead and the dry season has started. That is a problem for our garden which has survived off of rain water to this point. It took us weeks of tree clearing to re-open the road to the bottom of the property wide enough to get the backhoe through. Now it is time to fill our IBC totes to have water storage at the top of our property. We are a husband and wife team ...
This is a BIG Repair!

Things were going good until they weren't. With the backhoe down for repairs at a very inopportune time, we need to get this fixed fast! One plus side to this breakdown is that it forced me to fix the walked out bushing in the rod eye that I avoided during the hydraulic cylinder rebuild. This repair turned out better than I was expecting. Thank you for watching! We are a husband and wife team t...

In the last video, we trenched and installed our electrical conduit for our primary electrical service. Now it is time to pull the fish tape before we burry the conduit. I wanted to pull the fish tape first, so that we can insure the pipe is free from obstructions. After that is completed, we can backfill the trench so that we are ready for the power company. Not OFFGRID Much Longer!

In the last video, we prepared our electrical easement for trenching, now it is time to trench! We have to install 550 feet of 2" diameter PVC conduit. I believe that I only had to trench the conduit in 28" deep, but because I still have a bunch of grading to do on this property, ended up going 48" deep. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions! This video was filmed in June of 2024...

Our next big project we need to tackle is getting hooked up to the grid. We are responsible for clearing the proposed easement, grading the easement, digging the trench, installing the conduit, and backfilling the trench. Adding a Tongue & Groove Accent Wall to Our Pole Barn!

With the backhoe down for some repairs, it is a great time to install the tongue and groove 2x6 boards on the back wall of the shop. Josh i gave a thumbs up but i am not into re 🏃➡️ ATB from Perth
Mike, thank for letting me know and for watching
I really enjoy watching your videos, but I find it a bit odd that they show the homestead as it was months ago, even though you've made so much progress since then. It would be great to see updates closer to when the work is actually happening so we can follow the journey in real time-like many similar channels do. Just a thought!
Hi Rod, thank you for watching! I completely agree that it would be better to be current on my videos. I fell far behind on editing last year as I was working to get us established on the homestead and unfortunately the video editing took a back seat. My goal is to be caught up in the next month or so and then stay current from there on out. Thank you again for watching!
Just wanted to let you know, I've added your channel to our list of "Channels we love" on our UA-cam channel Home Page. Always some interesting content and enjoyable videos about it.
That’s really awesome, thank you for the support!
Wood chipper could be very helpful
You are right, a wood chipper would definitely make things a lot easier! Thank you for watching!
If you can lift the log from the butt end you will decrease the amount of dirt in the bark. Easier for sawmilling
That's great advise. I will need to be more mindful when dropping the trees to have them facing the right way to pull them out. Thank you for watching!
Wow that will be a lot of work. Can't wait to see the videos. 👍
Thanks for watching, it will be a lot of work for sure!

Do you really want that giant headache,so much money on spare parts just can’t see any value except you tube content sorry just my thoughts
@@jeffreygilchrist1330 I see your point, but I believe it will be worth the time and money to get it up and running. When it is done, it will basically be a new machine without all the new machine headaches (computers and def). I will also be able to swap out hard to get JCB parts for easier to obtain caterpillar parts. I hope to learn a lot along the way too. We are in no way able to take on something like this just for UA-cam content, it would not be work the time or money just for some views.
Looks like you guys are doing awesome. I appreciate the videos. I was just curious of what part of northern Idaho you’re at was born and raised in Orfino, terrain looks familiar. Just wondering how close to the hometown you are. Good luck in all your endeavors.
Thank you so much! We love it in North Idaho. You have a good eye for the area, we live within an hour an a half of Orfino. Thank you so much for watching!
So pleased to see you in the appropriate ppe _ chainsaw chaps and all! Better safe than sorry.
Yes, absolutely! The last thing I want is to get hurt and not be able to get our projects done. Thank you for watching!

Hi Mike! This video was filmed in July of last year. I am trying do get caught up on my editing. It was a busy year last year! Thank you so much for watching!
I am thinking of buying almost the same machine. I am on the Canadian side of the wire, East coast. I scanned your video and I did not see how many hrs are on it, or what you paid for it. Just wondering what they are going for so I can convert to Canadian dollars, and is there anything I should watch for when buying? NO surprises. Cheer's H
That's great! I love the machine and I highly recommended it. It had around 5,800 hours on it and I paid 25,000 usd. That price included the pallet forks and 2 spare used tires (1 with a rim). I think I got a fairly good deal on it. I would estimate my machine to be worth about 30k. I usually check websites like machinery trader to see roughly what the market price for a used machine is. I would check for excessive crankcase blowby, slippage in the transmission when digging into a pile and (no burnt oil smell), that the drivetrain/ AWD works correctly, and that the pins and bushings are reasonably tight. That is a high level overview, but you have to remember that a used machine will come with it's own problems that you will have to work through. My machine was owned by someone who wasn't the greatest with repairs/ maintenance so I have to work through all his previous repairs. Hope this helps!
I cant pick just one I LOVE THE WHOLE BUS ITS GORGEOUS... GREAT VIDEO N GREAT JOB , THANKS FOR SHARING THIS AMAZING JOURNEY N ADVENTURE WITH ME..... GOD BLESS YA'LL, SAFE TRAVELS ALWAYS, C YA DOWN THE ROAD !!!! ❤❤❤❤

Thanks! I am not sure at this point, I would like to use it to access a hard to get to section of the property. We also got a John Deere Gator a few weeks ago, and it would be able to easily use the trail without too much improvement. Thank you so much for watching!

“We”…….. what part of the cleaning did you do?
Are your parents cousins?
@ she filmed him clean all of the panels by himself and continually said “we”…. Do you understand what “we” means?
With all the wild animals in your area (you mentioned bears) I'm surprised you and Emily aren't carrying high caliber firearms with you at all times for protection. Hopefully you would never need to use a weapon, but if so you would be prepared. A former co-worker of mine moved from Maryland to Colorado and accidentally came across 2 small bear cubs while hiking, the mother was nearby and charged him. He received severe wounds across his back, neck and face. He was armed but unfortunately had to shoot the mother bear killing it, he was subsequently flown to a hospital for his injuries and eventually recovered. Cubs were rescued by the members of the Natural Resource Police (or whatever they are called in Colorado). Just a thought for your safety. Stanley in Md.
Emily is really good about taking bear spray when she leaves the clearing. I Usually carry when I leave the clearing also, but in this case I forgot to grab it for the first trip down to the creek. Thankfully we only have black bears, mountain lions and wolves to worry about. Currently, there are no grizzlies in our area. We are also members of Life flight, as the nearest hospital is about a 2 hour trip by ambulance from the point of (hopefully) calling 911. Thank you for concern and for watching!

@@freddiedaniel9225 We have starlink satellite internet! We work remotely full time and the internet is excellent. We actually have no cell service on our property, and rely on WiFi for texting a calling. Thank you for watching!
Josh things certainly seem the hard way @the moment but i am sure that time will solve all the problems, you could look @camlock fittings for the hoses might make life a little easier,do you carry any protection re the bears? ATB from Perth 👍👍👍👍
Haha, true! I have to contend with the 550 feet of elevation change and the 1500 feet of distance to get the water to the top. I hope a hydraulic ram pump will work, otherwise I am planning on using a solar powered deep well pump. I thought I had the correct fittings to attach my hose directly to the tote, but the totes use a special thread type that I needed to get adapters for. We are all set now! I usually carry when leaving our upper clearing, but forgot it on the first trip down. I also usually carry my fire department radio because the repeaters reach our valley. We have zero cell reception at our property. Thank you for watching!
We spent the first 4 months on our homestead hauling totes of water from a nearby spring to our rv while we began construction of our home. We've got a nice year round creek on the property, but the spring was easier to use since it was gravity fed through a pipe we'd just couple to and wait 10 minutes to fill 300 gallons. The day we got our $15K well dug was a happy one, even at that cost.
That sounds like you have a great setup! Unfortunately, our house build site is located at the top of our property, so gravity feed is not an option for us. I would love to have a well one day, but they are expensive, deep, and uncertain in our area. We gave friends that have spent well over 100k to get a well drilled and it was not a sure thing. Thank you for watching!
Get a pair of banjo fittings, male and female, install them onto the ibc outlet and pump hose, then couple and/or umcouple your pump hose....no hassle with squiting hose
I was panning to do that, but it turns out that the food grade totes that I bought used a course thread called male buttress. I didn't realize that until the day I filled the totes. I had to order the correct fittings online. Thank you so much for watching!
Josh ,job well done could last forever,i must say your problems are small compared to the California fires ,the people of Australia are very sympathetic towards your countrymen for we share the same problems re.bushfires ATB from Perth 👍
Thanks! I hope the repair lasts! The wildfires out in California are a tragedy and it will take years to rebuild. Perth had their own smaller tragedy a few days ago with the float plane crash. Thank you so much for watching
@ 👍
Excellent job, keep up the great work
Thank you for watching!
I'm thinking that you should do a few smaller, easier welding projects, like building me a nice backhoe. And a trailer to haul it on. Oh, and maybe a nice dually to pull all of it with. And then bring it across country to our place here in the Upstate. You know, when you have the time.... 😇
I will have to add that on my to-do list! Thanks for watching!
There is something wrong with this cylinder, maybe with the whole arm. Maybe it is bent entirely this would explain all three (four) issues the leaking cylinder the broken rod(for at least the second time) and the unprofessional bolt repair you showed in the end... 20+ years in maintenance thought me that multiple problems in the same area mostly have a common source... Also I have no real experience with excavators but also this "blocked" bushing is wired too maybe also do to a twisted stick or whole arm... Some newer excavators have cylinder eyes with ball scape so the can compensate for disalignment without bending the cylinder. Maybe this can be retrofitted but the space might be tight... Maybe you should investing in lathe? Anyway wish you both the best fulfilling your dreams!
I agree, I believe one of the mounting ears for the main stick pin is bent slightly causing the stick cylinder to be out of alignment. My plan is to separate the boom and stick this spring to bend the ear back and verify alignment and the wear status of the welded in pin. Thank you so much for watching!

I just have a 12” and 24” bucket for the back, and a 4-1 and forks for the front at the moment. I have plans to make a few more attachments. I really want to build a land plane, I think it would be incredibly useful. A side tilt bucket would also be nice. Thank you for watching.

Did you get the rock out of your pipe? Or was it small so you didn’t have to remove it.
It got caught in the plastic bag and fell out when Emily pulled the bag out of the conduit. It must have been in one of the pipes when I glued them together. Thanks for watching!
Roll roll roll the hoe, gently down the trench, merrily merrily merrily merrily, some times work ain't a cinch.
Haha, that's pretty good! Thanks for watching!
Hi I applaud your efforts but you would be better served in the future making these changes…use a smaller balloon and make the suction inset taped air tight once string appears then tie your ed to whatever you need to pull though….another trick is to place the couplings down hill to not obstruct what you are pulling I recently installed ,700 ft of underground main power to a plateau ….some lube and the cable went downhill so fast we feared the spool would come off the truck and at the power Poe termination it went upward over 20 ft
@@charlesdefrancisco5056 Those are all good suggestions! That’s a ton of momentum in your cable! I should have pulled the sting downhill, that way my couplings wouldn’t have been an issue. Thank you so much for watching!
Frick-n-frack :). I’ve been there. Congrats!
@tranquilitybase6417 Haha, it is not a good feeling! Thanks for watching!
Please don't say " sucks". Yer fortunate. I'm a farmer here in a typhoon infested Pacific, we often struggling. But still we call ourselves lucky.
Forgive me, I simply was using the term as a play on words. We used the vacuumed to suck the stringline through the conduit. I did not mean to offend. Thanks for watching!
When digging a trench, put two conduit in if you can afford the conduit. Always nice to have a spare and you could easily put fiber from there for a camera or something to monitor the power site.
I thought long and hard about that, but the power runs in a direction we don't plan to develop. I have plans to run power from the shop to a storage yard/ sawmill building. When I do that, I will also run water, a spare conduit, and a compressed air line. Thanks for watching!
AND some stout pulling rope
@ Yes! Absolutely!
To get a pull line in the conduit. Use a good shop vac, line cord and a plastic bag. Tye the bag to the cord like a parachute. That vac will suck that bag the hold way. When it is time to pull the wires in tie a rag just in front of the wires. Pour in liquid soap and add as necessary. Work smart not hard.
That's the plan! We are only responsible for getting a string line through the conduit. The power company will pull their fish tape using our line and then pull the wire through using their fish tape. I like the trick about using a bag with soap when pulling wires. Thanks for watching!
I'm intrigued see how you suck the string through the length of the conduit.... enjoying thr progress.
@@patrickhathaway6178 It actually wasn’t that bad! We will show the process in the next video. Thanks for watching!
Shop vac or blower. Many times I’ll just tie a plastic shopping bag to the string.
