Swytch kit install on a Vintage Mountain Bike

This is my second Swytch kit install, this time on a beautiful vintage Claud Butler mountain back from the 1990’s. This bike has a very small frame, and is much loved by its current user, so it was the ideal candidate for a Swytch kit conversion. It’s a Swytch version 3 MAX kit with a 26inch wheel. It’s a long video, sorry, but I hope some of you will find it useful, or even just a small part o...
Swytch Wheel Resistance Test - Brompton versus 26inch wheel

you know it is hard to install this kit when Swytch failed to send me the handlbar mount bracket. you know the one piece that ties all the other pieces together.
Just wondering if you could update on how your Swytch kit has fared. Any problems with it etc ?
how much
It’s variable depending on the different kits, and how long you are prepared to wait for delivery. Check out the Swytch website for the latest price info.
Wish I knew this , got lost near that railway bridge cycling from sea .slept in a vineyard 🤣
I can understand how it was easy to get lost at the bridge cycling in the direction from the sea. It’s a pity that this route is not the official route, as the canal between the railway bridge and Narbonne was very pretty.
Does the swytch go kit comes with the mount on brompton handlebar
I don’t think that the new GO kit will work with a Brompton, check the Swytch website.
Will a front Brompton Bag still fit?
Yes. With the way I have it setup here, the luggage block is unaffected and you can use Brompton front bags. There is an optional mount from Swytch which replaces the luggage block, but with this, you cannot use Brompton front bags.
I've just purchased a Brompton and will be electrifying it in accordance with UK law soon lol and lol some more. 0n a side note can you please tell me what programme you use for your Insta 360 camera I've got a half decent laptop it's not an Apple laptop, I've had the 360 camera since late 2018 and have III filmed shed loads of stuff during the first lockdown as I reside in central London I was on a illegal electric bike at the time so I was covering central London In world record Never to be repeated Super Quicktime, With The camera and Invisible selfie stick strapped to my Chopa handlebars With zip ties. The police THOUGHT I was using some sort of radar or photo shooting Google Maps For Google, I was zipping in and out of Whitehal and the mall at that point. There were no 360 gadgets then Like there is now For securing your stick on your bike So I have to use zip ties However I have never viewed The now terabyte load of footage as my computer at the time was not powerful enough to accept the 360 programme, I'm pretty sure things have changed now so I if you Tell me what programme you use that will be most helpful,
I agree, the output from 360 cameras is cumbersome on a PC. My camera in an Insta 360 x3 and I view and edit the files using an Apple iPad Pro. It’s not the latest model, probably 6+ years old, so a more modern iPad would probably be even better. It all works on a iPhone, but the larger screen of the iPad makes it much easier. The app is simply the insta360 app which allows you to crop and change the viewpoint etc. the output files from the app can then be used in your preferred video editor. I use iMovie on iOS/Apple.
@@mikeknowles6063 Yeah now you've mentioned Apple I think Insta had some type of deal with them so that they could place a 360 app on Their platform as opposed to Android Which I did end up getting but its an incredibly poor second man to Apple, It took forever 2 render And it was terrible when I saw some of the footage so I just gave up and buried it. However post COVID I can afford an apple computer laptop now, I'll do some research and get with the programme My friends and family have been asking for that footage for years Thank you
Good video. I hope that you didn't pay for a license to use that music though
Thank you
Just on packaging alone I don’t think I can support this company.
Yes, lots of cardboard
How much of the route is shared with cars? Thanks.
In theory the route should entirely car free apart from the bits between the canal and your hotel. When we rode the route there were some closed sections of path due to tree felling alongside the Canal. We were able to use very minor, quiet roads to bypass the closures. This is a long running project which I would imagine is still progressing, felling diseased trees and planting new.
Very useful. I just received my Switch Kit two days ago and the bike shop that normally installs e-bike kits has stopped due to the fact that, in the owner's words, too labor intensive and he loses money. But from this tutorial, you made it seem simple and easy. Thanks for doing the research and hard work.
Thank you, I am glad you found my video useful. I never imagined that this video would be so popular.
Most shops in central London have stopped doing that now The owner told me the same thing didn't fit his business model I'll translate that for you They don't make any money from it The switch guys make all of the money
I cycled in France last year with my wife....never again... she was always miles behind even when I was going as slow as I could...😅 mind you we are in our 60's..😮
Since we made this video, we have done many more cycling holidays, but my wife has switched to using an e-bike. This has balanced our speeds nicely, and made cycling together less stressful.
Looks ratty. How good is the assistance ?
It’s no motorbike, but for me the gentle assist is just right.
Great video Mike, I’m still learning about Brompton world, and just landed to your video and swytch ones. What advice would you give for a puchase? buy a brand new c line and a swytch kit, or go directly for an electric born Brompton electric? (Talking about c line in both cases, I suppose) thank you and keep up making such great videos!
Buying a Brompton electric will cost you about 1k more
@@AlexWaite yes, this is pretty clear, matter is about performances, weight, autonomy and so on.
I have thought long and hard about this, and I think if you are starting from scratch, buy a real Brompton electric. Also check out the new G Line electric which has a rear motor. The real Brompton electric will have far superior range and warranty. The Swytch kit is great if you already have a bike and want to convert it. The Swytch kitted Brompton will be slightly lighter, and has the advantage of assistance control from the handlebars.
Very nice, did you feel a compomise on your knees with the battery facing inwards?
Thank you. No issues with knee clearance. I am 178cm / 5ft 10 in .
No need for the cameraman in the back of a Range Rover! Well done Mike!
Indeed, and 6 months on it’s still going strong. No major crashes and lots of memorable home videos.

Thank for your great comment. I hope your kit has arrived by now and you enjoying using it.
This helped in my decision making. Just ordered the switch Go for my Brommie. Thank you
OK great. I thought the new GO kit was not going to be Brompton compatible. Let us know how this works out.
Thank you for the video Mike, very helpful
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment Louis
Thanks, Mike. Your video has been of great help!
Thank you Saimiri, I am glad it was helpful. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
I am about to click pay for the new swytch go+. Your video has really helped. Maybe it is me but I am finding it hard to get info on a couple of things. Does the swytch damage the gearing? And do the brake blocks wear out quicker?
thanks for the info.@@wgh-cs2nw
It does not damage the gearing - you effectively have a 2 wheel drive bike. I guess that there may be a very minimal chance of increased brake wear if you travel faster and therefore brake from higher speeds.
Thank you Mike. Soooo helpful in giving a realistic sense of Swytch delivery times, fitting issues/solutions and folding issues and solutions. Having been looking at Swytch on and off for 2 years with so far unsatisfied concerns about battery position on Ptype/pretzel/butterfly bars I decided to go for it regardless and ordered a couple of weeks ago. Been having cold feet since then but feeling much more confident after seeing your video.
Rebecca, Thank you. Hopefully your kit has arrived by now and you have it fitted. Mine is still going strong and I have added a MAX battery and an OLED controller.
@@mikeknowles6063 Going to be my configuration, too Mike. Are you using the Swytch OLED, or did you find one that fits and is less $$ ? My kit arriving soon.

We hired a boat in 1994 for 4 weeks to cruise from the Etang de Thau almost to Toulouse and return, so it was interesting to see your video of the canal. Brought back many memories, altho it was our least favorite of all the canal trips we have done in France and England. But your nightly accommodations were fancier than ours!
Thank you. Coincidentally, as a child I had many holidays on boats on the waterways of France, Ireland, England and Scotland, but now we cycle, and stay in hotels. Glad you enjoyed the video.
hi i’ve also got the Swytch Air installed on a brompton bike and was puzzled why it gives up after only 12km on a flat terrain on light mode (level 1-2) … thinking my battery was faulty. has anyone actually reached 15 km with Air?
I agree, it’s a stretch to get 15km out of the air battery. You have to put in substantial effort yourself to achieve 15km. Since this video was made I purchased a Max battery, which is far superior.
Hello, and thank you for the video. My Brompton came with a front wheel dynamo providing power to both front and rear lights. However, after replacing it with the 16-inch Swytch tire motor, I'm unable to connect to my existing front and rear lights. Have you encountered this issue? If so, do you have any adapters that can link my existing electric cable for both lights to the Swytch battery? There are two new round connectors available, but I'm uncertain about their use. Thank you.
I use conventional rechargeable lights. I think this is the best option for the Swytch system. My wife has a Shimano powered electric bike and this does have terminals to wire lights, but this was a £3000 bike.
Perfe t vidoe exactly what I'm looking for
Thank you. I am really happy that the video has been useful for you and so many others.
@@mikeknowles6063May I ask if riding up a steep hill is Easy, Okay or Challenging
I’d say easy to OK, it’s no motorbike, but this is far more dependant on the fitness of the rider , the bike gearing, and the gradient rather than the Swytch kit
Can you do a comparison of the swytch and the Brompton Electric first party?
Sorry, no, I don’t have a Brompton electric to compare.
Too much clearer than the video available from Swytch 😅
Thank you. I am glad that you and many others have found this video useful.
Excellent video. I just installed a swytch kit on a vintage Raleigh Sports. Wish I had watched this video prior to my install.
Thank you, I hope you enjoy using your electrified bike.

Maybe get this checked out at a friendly bike shop
where is this city ? This city is amazing !
The outside shots were in Pontrhydyfen in Wales.
Thanks Mike for your useful video! It made me easier to install my Brompton Swytch kit. I noticed that the battery level shown in the display (I have stadard display as yours) is always different from the charge level shown on the battery. As an example on the battery a 3 led level is shown whereas on the display 1 led level (or blinking so no power available) is shown resulting in a limited range. Did you noticed the same behaviour with your kit? Another question: do you know if there is a front light compatible with Brompton frame that can be connected to throttle cable?
Yes, I saw similar differences between the display and the lights on the battery. This seems to be normal, and the correct and trusted level is that shown on the display. Since making the video, I have purchased and installed the OLED display, and this has the same characteristics. I don’t think there is any way to connect lights to the kit without taking it apart and hacking into the wiring which personally I wouldn’t do. There are some great rechargeable lights available these days, I’d recommend some Lezyne Zectos which I recently put on my wife’s bike.
what happens when you switch gears with the swytch on the bike?
Danny, Switching gears does not affect the assistance from the motor. A huge change in cadence could effect how much assistance you get, but if you are using the gears normally then there should be no huge differences in cadence. I suppose it’s a bit like having a two wheel drive bike. It all feels surprisingly normal and natural.
Great video, I am currently following along installing mine. One question: I find the front cable tie for the pedal sensor is obstructing the way for the seat tube when folding the bike... Did others struggle with that too? Any solutions? Sadly the adhesive on my sensor was no good, relying on cable ties.
where did you run the cable? under the frame?
@@danielezefiro7492 Yes, pretty much as seen on the video.
@@spet2904 my cable runs over the lower part of the frame so I do not have this issue.
Emilie, Thank you. This is a good question, and something that I should have shown in more detail on the video. So, for the pedal sensor I used two cable ties. The rearward one is easy, it goes behind the seat tube on top, and underneath. The front cable tie is the tricky one, if goes in front of the seat tube on the top, and then behind the seat tube underneath. It seems odd, as you thread them this way, but when they tighten it all seems secure. On the underside you should find that there is a slight protrusion of seat tube (not seat post) which prevents the ties from moving even when the seat post is fully extended. Finally I used a third small cable tie to secure the wire for the sensor to the rearward cable tie. This is to make sure there is no strain on the sensor during the folding/unfolding process. Hope this all helps.
Thank you- great video of terrain. Were you camping or hotel? Did you reserve places on your own or were they prearranged ? Thx!
Thank you for leaving a comment. We were using hotels, and with our luggage transferred each day. Bike hire, hotels and the luggage transfer were all part of a package by a Evazio. If you look up Evazio on the internet there is some more detail, prices, and many other tour routes they offer.
Really useful - especially the sensor placement! Anyone fitted the ‘broblock’ to the front for lower battery mounting? Appe[arently this should help with centre of gravity being a bit lower, but unhelpful no instructions on fitting.
Thank you, Personally, I didn’t order the parts to mount the battery in place of the luggage block because I regularly use a bag on the luggage block. In the future I may investigate fabricating a bracket in aluminium to combine the battery mount and a Brompton luggage mount. You are correct, it would lower the centre of gravity, but also don’t forget, the Swytch batteries are not as heavy as on most e-bikes.
Thanks for the video! Do you have any drag in the front wheel (when the battery is off)? I just bought one, but It can hardly turn 3-4 times before stopping...and it makes it very hard once you run out of battery...
Yes there is some drag in the wheel. I was also a bit worried about it initially. There is another video on my channel where I compare two Swytch wheels, one for a Brompton, and one for a 26inch bike. Have a look at this video and see if it looks similar to how your wheel behaves. After more riding I have become less worried about the resistance. It doesn’t seem to slow me down above 15mph.
Hello Mike Thanks for your video I have a question : when you fold your Brompton is there a part of the frame that puts pressure on the PAS causing this one to be tilted hence causing jerks in the engine when pedaling (this is the situation i am facing with my swytch kit mounted on my Brompton ) ? if no you may have a different version of Brompton (mine seems to be older than yours) , I could send you a photo if my question is not clear . Thanks Axel
Axel, I don’t seem to have any issues with the disk of magnets. I did initially have an issue where tension in the cable was moving the sensor during the fold. This was alleviated by allowing some slack in the cable. This doesn’t sound like the problem you have. I am aware that the Brompton design has changed very slightly over the years, but I don’t know what those changes were. If you’ve tried Swytch themselves for support and still have issues please can I suggest posting a question with picture on the ‘Swytch Bike Chat’ Facebook group. This is a big community of users and someone may be able to help.
Thank you Mike! I will be attempting this with two Bromptons tomorrow. You've just simplified the task.
No problem, thank you. I hope your stall went smoothly.
ARCC make a kit for the Brompton, they use Bosch power tool batteries.
Yes, I have seen the ARCC kit in another UA-cam vide, it looks good and I especially like the idea of using easily available power tool batteries.
the music is ok but not appropriate. Loved your time and effort explaining everything. well done. Silence is much better or sounds of the road/traffic.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment under my video. My audio quality from a GoPro camera is not the best, and I use music to hide as much wind noise and clicks and bangs as I can. Have a look at some of my cycle travel videos on my channel and see if you prefer the music tracks on these videos. Thanks again, I hope your Swytch install has gone well.
I watched the whole video but did jump ahead a couple of times. That crusty bike was transformed with a clean - nice job. The kit and your workmanship make the conversion seamless and so unobtrusive that such a cool vintage bike deserves. Well done. Thoughts on fitting the tires back on. Before the conversion, only the back wheel propelled the bike forward. The front wheel only slowed the bike down. Now the front wheel is also driving the bike forward (and slowing it down) so the rotation direction may be better being the same as the back tire .Close examination of the tread pattern could show which way around the front tire could/should go, or leave it as is until the next puncture. Replacing the quick release hubs with 17 mm nuts to me is a Major improvement - the very last thing you want is the front wheel coming off. In my opinion this applies to any bike. Nuts also make is harder for someone to steal your wheel - quite valuable now that it has a motor in it. Though carrying a 17mm spanner in case of punctures is a bit a faff. I’ve had several bikes with cadence sensors - like swytch - and hated the bikes for that reason. I now have an ebike with a torque sensor in the bottom bracket and love how the power comes on in proportion to how hard I pedal and does this automatically. I appreciate that a kit like swytch can’t easily do this, but if you ever get the chance to get a kit with torque sensing, grab it; it makes a world of difference in a very refined, enjoyable way. Good luck with your next conversion; I watched your brompton conversation too. You will have friends and family queuing at the door. BTW my kit came from ebike.ca Grin Tech in Canada; very knowledgeable ebike people.
Simon, thank you for taking the time to leave such a great comment under my video. Your point about the rotational direction of the front tyre is very interesting, and something that I am going to research further. Next time I am in a bike shop that has a factory front drive bike ride, such as a Brompton electric, I am going to try and see what they have done with the front tyre. You are correct, there is a difference between cadence and torque based sensors. We are lucky to have several e-bikes in the household, front hub drive, Mahle rear hub drive, Shimano mid drive, and a very clever Fazua system (recently bought by Porsche). All have subtle differences, and different sensors The most efficient seems to be the rear hub drive, with a cadence sensor, but I agree the bikes with torque sensors seem more natural. The Swytch kit in this case has done its job, a simple conversion, and the owner of the bike is cycling again and enjoying it. Thanks again !
how much extra is a 98 wH battery as a spare?
I have now been able to buy a MAX 180Wh battery for £280 including delivery from the Swytch shop. There is no option in there to buy the Air 90Wh battery separate from the kit.
Thanks so much! Writing from upper NY state - a place where the Brompton is essentially unknown. I've been agonizing over buying the Brompton electric - the one I would want is $5,000 American - kinda crazy. This Switch should make the difference although right now it is Out of Stock - I'll probably bite and buy the Brompton C and add the Swytch when its possible to do it. Watching your video gave me more nerve - I think I can do this myself. Warmest regards and keep on truckin on your Brompton Jennie
Jennie, Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. The Brompton itself is a great bike, I am sure you will like it, either Brompton Electric, a Swytch conversion, or even the standard non electrified version. The Brompton electric has a bigger battery with more range, and a torque based sensor. The Swytch is slightly lighter due to the smaller battery, and uses a Cadence based sensor. The conversion is a enjoyable process if you have a Brompton already, but don’t rule out the official Brompton Electric if you spot on 2nd hand or at a reduced price.
@@mikeknowles6063 I bought 2 Bromptons on sale and one Swytch kit! I'm going to throw them both in the trunk at our upcoming family vacation so we can all have fun and get the concept of how revolutionary the Brompton could be in our lives. Thanks again for the great video
Hi Mike I recently bought a Swytch kit.. and was having similar resistance issues. I went to a Bike shop in town - just in case i had over tightened something etc.. Apparently they DO indeed have resistance.. but this gradually lessens as the wheel gets used more.. the Bearings etc will settle. I asked Swytch (replied just now) and they agreed there is resistance - especially on Bromptons due to the smaller wheel. Time will tell if they truly "loosen up".. Hope that helps.
This is interesting. Thank you for your extra research. I don’t think that the resistance is too much of a problem , ot just seemed a bit disconcerting, especially when compared to a larger Swytch wheel.
@@mikeknowles6063 I've had mine for almost 300 miles on a 26 inch wheel. There has been no lessening of the resistance.
Hello Mike, I bought this kit for my Brompton in max version and I am very disappointed because I do not exceed 21 km distance with a full charge on flat and windless terrain, can you tell me what your autonomy is?
Dominique, when the video was made I had just the Air battery and the basic controller. My range with the Air battery was around 16km. I have now purchased the Max battery and the OLED controller. I have only used the bike once with this new configuration , making three journeys in one day, carrying laptop etc in front bag, and with some hills. The total was 35km and the display still showed I had 2 bars of battery remaining. It’s difficult to say for sure but I have the feeling the OLED display is improving my range too, but I have nothing scientific to back this up. I think I should point out that I consider myself a fairly strong rider, and weigh 70kg. I use mainly the lowest power level 1, only switching to level 3 for one short 12% hill. I do not have a throttle, and the kit is working pedal assist only. My tyres are inflated to the optimum pressure.
Thanks Mike - just installed my G3 Brompton kit (received after a year of painful waiting!) and referenced your video heavily. Much truer to reality than they Swytch install info. I had the same question about the positoning of the PAS sensor and went with your suggestion. Really appreciate you doing this for the benefit of others like me.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I am glad that you found the video helpful. It’s amazing how many people are buying 3D printed parts to fix the PAS sensor when there is an easy solution that we have both done, and it looks much neater. Enjoy your new electrified Brompton.
I feel silly asking but what is a G3 Brompton kit ??
@@lonestarlaurel 3rd generation Swytch kit
Wow last time i checked the kit costed 1200€ when i want to have it in 1 month and around 600€ when you want to have it in 9-12 months all only for that, that it doesnt fit in the front and back 👎👎👎
Yes I agree it does now seem expensive. There are now cheap e-bikes on the market which make converting a bike look less attractive,.It does work very well though.
Swytch boost no resistance without assist. That's your answer.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I’m not sure that I understand what you are saying, but thanks anyway.
@@mikeknowles6063 To Quote Swytch "With the brushless technology, you’ll notice no resistance while you’re out on the road - even if you’re riding with the Power Pack switched off. " Mike, Thanks for testing a showing the true state of affairs. Rather false advertising, though in practice, probably not noticeable with an adult's weight and gravity pushing the bike along. Did you notice the drag before you tested for it ?
@@SimonBrowneNZ The drag is not an issue whilst riding, and I hadn’t noticed it before someone commented on my build video. The Brompton is mine, and the 26 inch wheeled bike is for a family member. Whilst I had access to the two bikes I thought a comparison video would be useful.
Hi Mike, thanks for your video. I will have my set very soon. As reference, how is the performance during climbing. I will take the bike with this kit for a tour with lot of climbing.
Norman, thank you I am glad you found the video useful. It’s difficult to quantify the performance uphill, but I will try. I would call myself a strong rider, live in a hilly area, and mostly use the very lowest power level on the bike. I’m very much treating this kit as assistance rather than propulsion and have been pleasantly surprised . Out of the saddle under high effort you need to be careful not to knock your knees on the battery, but with electric assistance this level of effort is unusual. I can imagine that a user who was expecting this tiny motor and tiny battery to propel them up long steep hills without any user effort they might be disappointed. As I’m sure you’re aware tyre pressure is also critical for the performance of any Brompton, electrified or not. By far the best upgrade I made to the Brompton for climbing and everyday use was to switch from the standard 50 tooth chainring to a 44 tooth. To me, the Brompton with a 50 chainring seemed overgeared for the type of riding I used it for. Hope you enjoy your new electrified Brompton.
