What's going on in Utah? Featuring Charlie Cummings of Swish Theory

"What's going on in Utah".... Brian Windhorst asked a few offseasons ago. As Windy hinted and finger pointed that change was afoot the NBA world giggled and scrambled to trade for the cream of the Jazz crop in Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. Utah got a haul that gave off OKC vibes and with Danny Ainge at helm a Western conference powerhouse was sure to be on the way. Except, two seasons and e...
Drafting Rookies with Dan Ollinger of The Draft Council!

A week of the 24/25 NBA season has taken place and as predicted; the 2024 rookie class has gotten off to a slow start. But, gaze into the future, peer, peak, draw back the curtain and try to envision a world in which Reed Sheppard is on fire in Houston, Zach Edey isn't fouling 4.7 times per game and Zaccharie Risacher can finish at the rim. That's exactly what Dan Olinger and I tried to do on t...
The Mental Side of Shooting Development with NBA Shooting Coach Dave Love

Square your shoulders to the basketball, tuck that elbow in, ten toes facing the rim, don't let that guide hand interfere with your shot! When I think of shooting development, like many other I focus on the physical side of things, correcting form, energy transfer, fluid motion, eliminating that funky footwork etc but there's so much more to it than that. I asked NBA Shooting Coach Dave Love on...

    As you said Hartenstein was 14th between Tatum (13th) & Booker (15th) for EPM Rtng. For Def EPM IHart was 2nd. Only J.Isaac was ahead of him & Isaac only played 58games.

      Incredible player, as we alluded to I am slightly worried that he compromises the offensive set up/backs Chet into a corner from a creation POV that he might not quite be ready for. Super exciting acquisition, I just hope that he isn’t a guaranteed starter/closer.

      @TheDropStep_NBA Good pts. Especially about the concerns w/ Chet guarding on the perimeter. I don't want Chet playing the '4' the majority of time. Hartensteins screens, Off reb, passing & floater will be very helpful, but we cant forget how great OKC played last yr when the Thunder played w/ Chet & four guys 6'6 & under. Their transition game will be slowed down w/ IHart. NTM Daigneaults played exclusively a '5-out' O' the entite season. For end of game l/u's OKC needs to mix & match Caruso, Dort, IHart & I.Joe to fill those last 2 spots.

      @@kevinscott9242 Couldn't agree more - If you've got time I'd watch some of Chet at Gonzaga where he played the 4 next to Drew Timme in the front court. Led the conference in FG% - took 3 3's per game and made 39% of them, casually averaged 3.7 Blocks per game too - if the Thunder play a combination of Caruso, JDub, Shai, Dort, Wallace in those first 3 spots you can have them play super aggressive knowing you have Ihart AND Chet to erase anything at the rim. It's the offensive side of the game for me, more difficult diet of 3's, slightly more mobile defenders on Chet if IHart is in the game, will need to tighten the handle/bully in A Gordon style to maximise double big lineups.

    There is no if. Shai is definetely not the best iso creator in the game. The guy who eliminated him is.

      I’m inclined to agree - love Luka - in the past when Dallas had that five out look he was unstoppable in isolation it’s just last year particularly post deadline I felt like he was always in PNR because either Gafford or Lively were on the floor whereas Shai got to operate in isolation a ton because Chet can pop to the perimeter. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe!

    If the Sixers go and sign Paul George and it doesn't work they're going to have to trade Embiid and they're not going to get any value. They'd still be nowhere near Boston and they'd be stuck with one of the worst contracts in basketball. They might just have to trade Maxey too because all their picks would be too far down the road. If they pick up tradable contracts they'd actually have the ammo to trade for a real max player. Daryl Morey can't be this dumb can he?

    • @TheDropStep_NBA
      @TheDropStep_NBA 7 місяців тому

      The thing is if you sign PG13 you maintain pick flexibility. Teams often hit the reset button when there’s nowhere left to go so in theory even if George had a bad season, team wasn’t going anywhere you’ll still have your picks, still would’ve signed another $25,000,000 worth of tradable contracts along with George this summer, you aren’t out of options. Who would you rather see Daryl target?

    • @sprucewayne10
      @sprucewayne10 7 місяців тому

      @@TheDropStep_NBA Bey, Beasley, Bruce Brown, KCP, Bertans, Claxton. Guys who fit, have upside, can run the floor an/or shoot. Guys that are tradable. I'd rather get Westbrook cheap than give a max to 34 year old Paul George I definitely agree that they need to keep their picks. The Sixers just aren't the kind of team that attracts a true max player. They have to draft them or trade for them.

    • @TheDropStep_NBA
      @TheDropStep_NBA 7 місяців тому

      @@sprucewayne10 KCP makes a ton of sense and if Toronto declines Brown’s TO I get making him a mid-level offer. Not a fan of the other suggestions personally. Are you just low on PG? What’re your thoughts on the others guys we discussed?

    • @sprucewayne10
      @sprucewayne10 7 місяців тому

      @TheDropStep_NBA PG is still a good player but giving a good player who is on the decline a max contract is a desperation move that could set this team back for years. The Sixers have 2 guys capable of All NBA play and a championship level coach. Going after undervalued guys who are athletic and can play a role or be traded for a true max contract player or high caliber 3rd option makes way more sense to me.

    • @TheDropStep_NBA
      @TheDropStep_NBA 7 місяців тому

      @@sprucewayne10 completely fair, it’s why I’d consider Ingram despite the fact that you’d have to invest picks to get him. Prolongs the window you have with Joel, about $20,000,000 cheaper than George/James/Butler too.

    This was fun! I thought Holiday was a no brainer and was surprised JJ didn't pick him. I also thought of OG being paired with Michael. Good video, although I think JJ's team would beat yours, but I enjoyed what you did. Also as a Cavs fan I LOVED the Sam Merrill appreciation.

    • @TheDropStep_NBA
      @TheDropStep_NBA 9 місяців тому

      Thanks man, that's much appreciated! To be honest I think that JJ's team is objectively better but the essence of building around these guys should be to pair them with the most complimentary players to their games not just really good complimentary players. Derrick White, Jalen Williams, they kind of fit around absolutely anyone and well, Jokic is Jokic but I found it more fun to try and build a team with a real identity. Being able to switch 1-4 with four guys that're insanely physical for their size with Chet behind would be super fun and help the team get our in transition a bunch. This also feels more like Michaels team. The issue with pairing him with Jokic is well, who's going to touch the ball the most out of those two? Putting MJ in Murray's role is super fun but for the purposes bof building around MJ I'd want to maximise his talents. I've got a new video coming based around the Shaq episode that JJ just dropped so consider subscribing!
