"AMICA" Pietro Mascagni-Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra & Choir-Complete Opera (2 Acts) - LIVE.
Recorded 26 October 1984-Kees BAKELS conducting/Lynne STROW PICCOLO (Amica)/Michael NEWMAN (Rinaldo)/Vincenzo PUMA (Giorgio)/Henk SMIT (Camoine)/Rachel-Ann MORGAN (Maddalena)/Choir Master: Peter SERPENTI. "Amica (Dramatic Poem)" premiered at the Opera du Casino de Monte Carlo (Monaco) 16 march 1905, in French, with Geraldine Farrar and a few months later at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, in Italian. Amica became so popular on stages around the world that a film director named Enrico Guazzone made a silent movie with Leda Gys, an Italian movie star, in the title role (several silent movies were made in that period from operas and Leda Gys starred also in La Boheme by Puccini).

"Maria Stuarda" is an opera composed by Gaetano Donizetti with lyrics by Giuseppe Bardari. It was meant for the San Carlo (Naples) stage but the censors refused approval of the subject. After many vicissitudes it was re-elaborated and presented under the name of "Buondelmonte" in 1834. The first performance of the work with the original name was held at La Scala in 1835 in a re-elaborated version.

Ripresa e incisa da Bakels con la orchestra della Radio Olandese nel 1986,questa opera ha rivelato pagine di grande interesse musicale..Speriamo in una ripresa anche in teatro ,ma almeno qui in Italia le speranze sono scarse.Mascagni continua ad essere considerato solo come il compositore di una sola opera "Cavalleria rusticana"
Conoscevo questa opera nella versione francese (Amica’, con l’ accento sulla a finale). Poco rappresentata ma interessante. Cantata in francese ,che fra l’altro dovrebbe essere la versione originale, la trovo più efficace e meno verista. Complimenti comunque per averla caricata.

Sorry to disappoint you but Lazaro ended his carrier in 1950, when Lynne Strow was still an infant. She sang in the seventies and eighties as reported on Wikipedia.

In the Corelli time there were no way to mediocrities that infest theatres today. Only good ones. Bello is a surprisingly good singer that now could be an embelishment to all great performances.

Magnificent voice, a true Verdian soprano, but I think it's better suited to later Verdi operas than this true bel canto opera. She was able to trill beautifully, but her technique isn't up to producing the rapid-fire trills Verdi wrote for this cabaletta. She must have been a magnificent Aida, Forza Leonora, Amelia, Desdemona, etc. What a great voice!
I agree. She manages the coloratura like most singers who attempt it. I love her vocal heft and control. I don't know why she isn't more well know. I think she retired for personal reasons... Brilliant and beautiful. I'm so grateful I came across Lynne Strow Piccolo.
Why haven't we heard of this magnificent voice before??? I just discovered her this morning, and I think she's one of the greatest spinto sopranos I've ever heard. I still think her coloratura technique falls a bit short for the demands of a true bel canto role like Norma, but I still enjoyed this. And she could also sing a beautiful trill!!
Record companies and opera directors only pursue the money. Making a few the big stars and other equally talented or even more talented suffer the politics.

This opera is not unknown: like Iris, it's never been out of the repertoire in Italy, there are several complete recordings available, and it's been performed outside of Italy several times in the last 30 years: Ireland, New York, Holland and other venues.
Its all relative, it unfortunately not quite as often performed as La Boheme or the Magic flute!

There were simply too many great sopranos in the 1970s and 80s overshadowed by Caballé and others pushed by the record industry. Strow Piccolo was insanely good. She deserves more fame.
