Actual Participation - Session 14: Going Forwards or Backwards? Addressing Contemporary Questions
Recorded via livestream on March 5, 2024, this final session of the 14-part series of talks by Fr. Joel on worship and sacraments in the life of the Catholic Church seeks to bring to summary the central teachings of this series, particularly emphasizing how the way of worship and of the sacraments themselves has been given to us by God as our primary means in this life to partake of His divine life here and now, pointing us toward and granting us already a share in the eternal life of heaven. Said another way: through the sacramental worship of God, we “actually participate” in an exchange of covenant love which God wills for us to share for all eternity.
Specifically in this session, entitled “Going Forward or Backwards: Addressing Contemporary Questions,” Fr. Joel initially summarizes all that has been covered about the nature of who God made us to be, our eternal vocation in Him, and how through worship and the sacraments we share in what He promises. He once more presents these points from the foundation on God’s primacy as Creator, and how all that is both comes to be through Him and finds its final fulfillment in Him - through making right return to Him.
Most of the session, however, focuses upon applying the question of whether particular practices of the present-day Church, and specifically those which are understood by many as being “pre-Vatican II” or more traditional, are rooted in intentions that move the Church backward or truly can be a means to move us forward. After looking with some depth on the true nature of participation in worship and in the life of the Church by all of the faithful as presented in the Code of Canon Law, Fr. Joel focuses on the issues surrounding the general use of Latin and the present state of the Latin Mass, the manner by which Holy Communion is received, and the question of what direction the priest ought to face when offering Mass (either ad orientem [facing with the people “toward the east”], or by facing toward the people). In each of these issues, he proposes that “going forward” means moving toward God (which means humbling ourselves and allowing the primacy of God’s work to be our focus).
The session concludes with a brief time of questions and answers with the live audience.

Matthew 23:9! (Preacher, Pastor, Teacher, or Rabbi)
Fr Hastings, I would like to say how pleasantly surprised I was to find your podcast on the teachings of our Holy Catholic Apostolic Church. These videos are great refreshers for those who were not catachised properly or those contemplating joining the Church. I also wanted to thank you, your effort and love of mankind will be rewarded in Heaven. May God bless you Fr. Hastings!
"Men Can't Be Priests" By Rosemary Radford Ruether. A synod of bishops from the four corners of the earth, and a full panoply of Mother Superiors, recently converged on the Holy City of Rome to consider the vexed question of the ordination of men. The Holy See had received many tearful appeals from the cruder sex claiming to have a call to the priesthood directly from God Herself. But Her Holiness had firmly replied to these appeals that the call must have been a wrong number. Our Holy Mother in Heaven would never call to the ministry those so obiouslv disqualified by reason of gender. But the men had refused to take no for an answer Throwing down their picks and shovels, they had declared that they would do no more maintenance work for the Church until there was equality of rites. They sent petitions to the Holy See, filled with arguments for the ordination of men, both theological and practical. Atthough, of course, they could cite no example from Jesus himself, the incarnation of Holy Wisdom, since he most evidently had ordained no men to the priesthood (or women either). It was said that confining the ordained ministry to widowed women over sixty-five was causing a crisis throughout the world. More and more older women felt the juices still flowing after sixtyfive and were not willing to embrace blessed widowhood. Some preferred to run for Prime Minister or Chairwomen of the Board, rather than turn to the sacred service. Finally Her Holiness decided to gather the Holy Mothers of the Church together, with a number of the best qualified peritae, who had spent a lifetime studying the odd characteristics of the male gender, from a safe distance, of course. They hoped to come up with a definitive answer, once and for all, to the vexed guestion of the ordination of men. After long and careful study, in which the Holy Mothers had enjoyed a good many laughs on the subject of men and their foibles, a final decree was drawn up defining the reasons why men could not be ordained. Ihe decree was proclaimed by Her Holiness ad urbe et orbe, and the Holv Mothers departed for their respective seats of wisdom, feeling very pleased with themselves. The decree Ad Hominem stated to their satisfaction, and, hopefully, for all time the weighty reasons for their gut prejudices. The first part of the decree deduced a good many reasons from men’s biological and psychological natures that disqualified them from the priesthood. It was said, first of all, that men were too violent and emotional to be priests. .Anyone who has watched groups of men at football matches, ice hockey, soccer or cricket games, not to mention political conventions, has seen their volatile tendencies and penchant for solving conflicts with fisticuffs. To ordain such creatures would be to risk disgraceful brawls at the altar. The male proneness to violence surely disqualifies them to represent the One who incarnates graciousness and peace. The cruder and heavier physical frame of the male clearly marks him out for the physical tasks of society, digging ditches, mending roofs and the like. The finer more spiritual tasks of society are intended by our Mother in Heaven for those more refined spirits and bodies, women. This separation of roles is clearly evident in Scripture where the males are said to have been created from dirt, while women were created from human flesh. Moreover women were created last, clearly marking them out as the crown of God’s Creation. It was even suggested by one Mother Superior that Adam was a rough draft, Eve being the more refined and complete version of human nature. The Mothers had a good many laughs on that one, and some decided to make it into a bumper sticker. It was also felt that men were needed for military defence. A man’s place is in the army, declared one wise perita, and all the Holy Mothers nodded in agreement. Besides men would look silly in red dresses and lace. The sacred garb is clearly intended for women Profound matters of a theological nature were also discussed. One perita has prepared a long paper proving from the symbolic order that men could not be ordained. The division of humanity into male and female is a profound mystery that symbolizes the relationship of the transcendent and the immanent, the spiritual and the material. Women represent the spiritual realm, men the material. The material must be ruled by the spiritual, just as Holy Wisdom presides over the physical cosmos as her household. Moreover since the Church is female, those who represent the Church clearly should be female as well. There should be a physical resemblance between the priest and the Church as Holy Mother. Obviously this means that all priests should be mature women. The Church is also said to be the Bride of Christ, and brides are female. The priest, as representative of the Church in relation to Christ, represents Christ’s bride. Therefore only women can be priests. Finally it was noted that most of the people who come to church are women. Men tend to stand outside the doors of the church gossiping or else sneak off to sporting matches. To have a man on the altar might distract a woman from her prayers. It was solemnly noted that men are sexually attractive to some women. For women to have to sit listening to men preach or watching them stomping about the sanctuary might lead their thoughts to descend from the higher to the lower realms. It was hoped that with so many clear reasons, from both the natural and the theological realm, against the ordination of men, this would settle the matter. Male impertinence would be silenced, and they would slink back into their proper sphere. Roma locuta: cause finita.
Wow thank you Father. I’m learning so much! 🙏
This is so important. Thank you. We all need to keep learning to have adult understanding of our faith. Well done. I’m looking forward to all the videos.
So very interesting learning more in depth about our rich Catholic faith. Thank you for streaming these sessions so people like myself who can’t get there in person can still partake.

3 characteristics of The New Mass/ Lutheranism 1. Denial of the supernatural 2. Evolution of dogma; that dogma evolves 3. That the basis of religion is one’s personal experience with God = focus on us. Why priests face the people. All Protestantism.

Beautiful. Thank you Father Joel!
Thank you for recording and posting this.
Greetings, Fr. Joel. Praying all is well with you.
Best description of the subject ever
Thank you Father for a thorough detailed explanation of the escathology or the the last things which help to understand being a Catholic especially to those lacking in knowledge by mostly baptized Catholics. May God bless all your efforts and help more in inner conversion also new converts.
Pure lies. Catholics have actually removed the 2nd commandment which is "You shall make no idols" (or graven images) and call the 3rd commandment "You shall not take the Lord's name in vain" the 2nd commandment (check you bible, and you will see). Why you ask? Because Catholics practice idol worship and it is much easier to do this when you have actually removed the commandment from the list that makes idol worship a problem. Can you believe that? That Catholics have actually removed one of God's given commandments to mankind??? Unbelieveable!!! To make it even worse, to get back to 10 commandments, they took the 9th commandment and broke it into two parts. Again, UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! By very VERY careful my friends, and do not be mislead by the Satanic things Catholics do. READ YOUR BIBLE and be aware of what it says so you are not deceived. Always remember Sola Scriptura (scripture alone) to help keep you on guard from this warped religion full of deceptive teachings.
Education in Catholicism is very important through Bible studies and catechism studies. What I learned as a child is nothing compared to what I am learning now as my new goal to understand best what my spiritual journey should be. Thanks to Internal availability I am learning anew.

What a gem! I wish more people could know about your videos!
Thank you for helping me understand
so does this mean that the eucharist is christ sort of bio locating across time to every mass at once so we can partake in his sacrifice across time? or is it the risen and glorified christ in heaven being offered up over and over again?
could you explain that part about us being held until the person we have injured with our sins have been healed? (3:20) Its seems by that logic if i damage a person but end up in purgatory and they go to hell i could never be released. But it’s clear this must be a misunderstanding on my part so clarification would be appreciated
Father, I’m a practicing Catholic who, until recently, sought plenary indulgences for past sins. Only after reading some of the Canons of the Council of Trent a couple of days ago, I had an epiphany. I wouldn’t call it a divinely-inspired epiphany but a profound realization not brought about by any outside source. That epiphany is how indulgences and “debt of temporal punishment” cheapen the substitutionary death of our Lord Jesus Christ. I now have confidence in the all-sufficiency of our Lord’s salvific work to COMPLETELY satisfy justice. I am no longer operating under the fallacy of being saved by Christ and something else. There is no other thing we, as human beings, can do to make reparation to an all holy God. It’s Christ who bore ALL the penalty of sin. The only thing we are left with are sins’ consequences in this life and, as described in our Lord’s parable of the master beating his unfaithful servants after his return (a clear reference to Purgatory). In other words, there is no “debt of temporal punishment.” There is, therefore, no need for indulgences. Indulgences are the crypto currency of the spiritual realm, a phantasmagorical thing with no value whatsoever. As for a “treasury of merits,” that concept reduces the saving efforts of our Lord to so many bitcoins. Yes there is a Purgatory, but God Himself, will determine whether we are beaten severely or leniently. He cannot be bribed with indulgences.
Gregory, Thanks for your comment and insights. Might I acknowledge that one detail I should have included in this explanation is that to receive any indulgence, and in particular those which are plenary (that remove all consequences/temporal punishments), we must also have in our hearts a sincere desire to be completely detached from our former ways of sin and their effects. That detail being essential, might I invite your consideration of the following: While indulgences surely have the outward appearance being "something else" in addition to Christ's own saving work (through the outward prayers and pious actions by which they are gained), anyone who rightly receives an indulgence is simply (and properly) opening their hearts to more perfectly receive the grace of Jesus Christ that is offered through His saving works - including by their detachment from their sins. Indulgences do not operate in addition to the work of Jesus such that they depend upon our work - as the granting and gaining of an indulgence is only possible because they are rooted in and flow from Christ's saving grace in his one-time offering of Himself, which He always desires to make available. For as I said in the video, no one can play Christ for a fool as though if I "gain enough indulgences," I have my get out of jail free card, which does cheapen his offering - as such an approach is both presumptuous and quite arrogant (as though God will "owe" us these indulgence). Rather, the prayers and actions attached to gaining indulgences are simply the means to aid us in opening our hearts to God's saving grace which He wants to give us. Thus, when it comes to plenary indulgences that remove all temporal punishments, the plain truth is that in addition to the prayers and pious acts that are prescribed, one's soul fundamentally needs to be perfectly disposed to receive the complete healing of God to fully receive it - including through their sincere desire to be detached from all sin. However, what is more likely (and true) in real lived experience is that for each indulgence that is objectively gained by a member of the faithful, such individuals will only receive what they themselves are capable of receiving based on their disposition to receive the grace (and this disposition is to include the intention of total detachment from sin). Thus, gaining the intended effects of indulgences has more to do with our dispositions to receive the grace of God and less to do with the simply completion of a set of prayers or actions in addition to Christ's saving work - as God perfectly bestows His saving grace on those who are perfectly open to it; while those who are only imperfectly open will receive that which their disposition will allow. If you have not already done so, might I encourage you to look at paragraphs 1471-1479 of the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" for a clear and concise explanation of some of the the terms with which you express concern, particularly the reality of a "treasury." God bless you.
Please forgive my tirade. I wrote my comment after completely forgetting our Lord's parable in Luke 12:42-48. The parable referencing His judgment on His servants. It's clearly a reference to temporal punishment. Please excuse my error and inflammatory language. Your response was, as they say, "spot on." 🙂
Another way to approach it is as members of the Body of Jesus in the Catholic Church, it is us who should conform and adjust our views to her teachings and not the Church adjusting and conforming to our views. That is the Doctrine of Infallibility of the Catholic Church, we believe that her teachings are free from error. The Church is divinely operated by the Holy Spirit. God bless you.
Dear God, you've got it all wrong... the 7 Spirit of God is not a gift of the spirit, in fact He is the Holy Spirit Himself as one of the God Head. You must have confused with the 9 gift of the spirit. Learn more and repent, brother.
Thank you- I needed to hear this today ✝️
I hope and pray these videos have benefited (and will continue to benefit) all who have chosen to take them in, aiding each to grow in love of God. God bless you!
Unfortunately, the sound is very poor.
God the Most High: My Power exceeds all that is of this world and beyond it Saturday Jan 10, 2015 at 03:36 pm My dearest daughter, humanity has turned against Me and all that I created in My Image and for that My Sorrow is great. My children will be saved by the Intervention of My dearly beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and this will take place very soon. Before this day I ask all those who love Me to acknowledge the Truth; My Son and His Love; to pray for His Mercy. You, who love My Son, must remember His Promise to redeem the world and eradicate sin before His Glorious Kingdom descends. Life of the body and the soul will be eternal and those who accept My Son’s Mercy will gain this great Gift. Those who don’t, will not. Come, My children, and accept My Word, for it is eternal and nothing will destroy it. My adversary seethes with anger at this time, because he knows that the world will be rid of his influence and he will unleash terrible hardships upon those souls he desires to deny the Gift of Eternal Life. You will be tested beyond endurance in your faith in the Most Holy Blessed Trinity, and many of you will fall. True faith requires real trust and unless you trust in the promises made by My Son, you will become separated from Him. Every single child of Mine will be given the proof of My Existence shortly. When this sign is given, do not doubt it, for it is to bring you into My Refuge that I bequeath to you. Many signs have been given to the world of My Existence and now I bring you much more. Fear not, for I will pursue every soul and there is not one amongst you that I do not love with a tender Heart. I love My enemies, including those who torture Me with their wickedness. But, soon, the Gift I will bring them will awaken a dormant love for their Creator within their hearts. Their love and My Divine Love, combined, will defeat evil. I will wipe away all their fears and tears. You, My dear children, will be given this Gift when you are least expecting it. For that time is drawing nearer and the face of the world will be changed forever and for the good of all. My Power exceeds all that is of this world and beyond it. My Kingdom is everlasting. Your beloved Father God the Most High

This is a really great video with great information. I am considering using at least part to show my youth group. In the future, I would recommend a different eye-level camera angle from farther away. This would make it much more interesting showing more of you bookshelves and icons/statues but less awkward of a view. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the advice Hunter. I have made some adjustments over time and hopefully my current camera angle and backdrop are less problematic.
Who is the Holy Spirit ? Jesus says "But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, will not be forgiven...": to be more important than Jesus of course you must at least have A MIND. The Holy Spirit is thus NO "impersonal force" or "magical dust" as it sometimes unfortunately appears in the Scriptures. Accordingly, in the nicene creed the Holy Spirit has been identified as a third God-Person : "the Lord who gives life". But when Jesus was baptized, the Father (= the almighty God) said "...my beloved Son..." well, what did "the Lord who gives life" (who is supposed to be the Holy Spirit) do there, at the Jordan river? Something's wrong! We uncover now the truth. The Holy Spirit is equal to the Spirit of God (see the gospels). But who is the "Spirit of God"? He is GOD WHO IS A SPIRIT ("God is a spirit" John 4:24). In other terms, at the Jordan river simply God who is a spirit - and is namely called the Holy Spirit - said "...my beloved Son...". If God is a spirit, this logically means that He is NOT "normal", He is ONLY a spirit. What does it mean "He is a spirit" ? We could say He is "PRESENT but also ABSENT". It's like having someone at the phone: he is present, since you can talk to him, but he is also absent, because not in your room. Thus, in reality the person of God is somewhere else, where is He? God is IN THE PAST "the world has not known you". Therefore of course "no one has ever seen God" (not because "God is transcendent"). Even the Son "HAS SEEN the Father" and can NOT see the Father NOW. The Father thus dwells in a remote past, but from that past - by means of his power - He can reach us in our present time with his words and actions, He can SEE us now. He is in the past, this is why now everything must be carried out by the Holy Spirit (see the gospels). Only his power (a thing) is REALLY present and active here, separate from Him (because in the past) and from Jesus: the "POWER OF GOD". God is a spirit here, He is called the Holy Spirit (or Spirit of God, or Spirit of the Father). The Holy Spirit is thus a SPIRITUAL EXTENSION of God in our present time, only ONE MIND exists, not two: God and Holy Spirit are exactly the SAME almighty God. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (see above) thus is equal to blasphemy against the Father .
God is the Only Father. Pope is not in the bible. Mary was Jesus mother but he addressed her by name or woman. Catholicism is man made religion. You must be born again to inherent the kingdom of heaven. Follow Yeshua not man or religion. Glory to God
Are you Catholic now?
Very informative, Thank you Father!

Thank you Fr. Joel just came across this talk, from Johannesburg, South Africa. The Communion of Saints along with Mother Mary are in heaven looking down on us and cheering us on as we complete our race here on earth. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints... GOD bless!
Thank you
Less obstructive is fine wth me. Thank you for this mass, Father.
Yes, I think the new angle works, maybe move a little more to center, if you have some wiggle room.
Livestream camera was set up at a different angle for today....in preparation to continue to livestream the Mass in a less obstructive way to any who are in the pews once we can reopen Masses to the public. Let me know in the comments your observations about sightline, sound quality, etc. God bless you.
Thank you for this mass, Father.
Thank you for this mass, Father and those behind the scenes.
Bless the little ones who were to receive Jesus tomorrow.. . This recording here is so clear.. The Mass has such an echo it’s difficult to listen to. Thank you for all that you’re doing to keep us connected Fr. Joel. It must be very difficult for you.
