Not an anorak in sight.
Some highly interesting footage here... We (illegitimately it must be declared...!) joined the "Whitby Moors Wanderer" double-headed by No. 3442 'The Great Marquess' and K1 class No. 62005 when it was readying to leave Whitby on its return journey. One of my school friends from the Grangefield School Railway Society (near Stockton-on-Tees) simply asked on the platform: "Do you want to go on it?" No-one onboard expressed any concern at this and we hence had a most enjoyable ride. Another sound-recording colleague was I believe at Ruswarp that day and recorded a series of very sad and ghostly whistles near Ruswarp. I believe an English Electric Type 4 headed the final timetabled service train that day? (Perhaps D259???) The small (yet likely to have been crucial) part I played in the history of the NYMR when stationed for several years at BR's Thornaby Area Civil Engineer's Office was - following an order to go and measure up a couple of 'leads' (turnouts) at - I believe - Goathland for removal and installation of these "part-worn" assets elsewhere. ("Scrap" more likely in those times!?) The less-common angles of these switches and 'crossing' units in the two leads meant however that they'd very likely be suitable for re-use elsewhere. Well, I duly followed orders and took all relevant measurements BUT somehow failed to hand over this data on my return. And guess what? No further questions were ever asked about these switches and crossings and they fortuitously remained in situ. To conclude, many years later, a kindly Safety Manager I met on a Railway Safety Management(?) course gave me The Grand Tour of this wonderful railway, for which I shall remain ever-grateful.
What bloody awful music turn it off!
Amazing!
When Bradford was a great place to live I can remember the old station & the smell of the steam trains
Great footage of one of my favourite places
Love it!
Brilliant! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video. Thank you so much for bringing it to us .😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Happy memories of my Leeds-Glasgow train commuting in 1978. Always remember the guy walking down the side of the train at Carlisle tapping each wheel with a hammer on the Sunday 19.30 return. The 16.10 from Glasgow on Friday was like a private club in the buffet car. Same group of us all with our 8 cans of Tennants lager carry-on. #goodolddays
👍
Great video! Thank you.
👍
What date was this?
October steam gala, 2024.
WONDERFUL! Steam trains mean childhood memories, Will Hay in Oh Mr Porter, and the great Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson on their way to uncover some ghastly mystery on the Moor!
👍
Great video, love the colours of the Bristol Lodekkas and the instantly recognisable locations.
Glad you enjoyed it
Put up the Perth to Kinross footage again. It's fantastic.
That wasn't mine....
The railways back then were things of beauty unlike todays anodine, brutalist, functional hellscapes
They were. Wish I could have seen them...
@@locoshed1977 I wish I could go back, would have been the perfect hobby now I've finished work.
So many memories!
👍
Just Brilliant !
Thank you.
I was on that last train to whitby and back. Shame it was a diesel.
🙄
4:40, Hellifield shed after closure was used for long-term storage of around 12 of the National Collection of locomotives, such as the M.R. 4-2-2 Spinner" Crab 42700, EMU M28249M and a Kirtley 0-6-0
👍
Fantastic film Better days for sure Thanks for this😊😊😊😊
You're welcome.
Fantastic cafe now on the station platform. Passenger services in the guise of DalesRail used the Blackburn - Hellifield route with 4 trains on a Sunday only. This service was stopped by Northern in late 2023. Although the service had been suffering abrupt cancellations for some time before this, engineering this eventual ceasing of the service. For a couple of years this service also ran over the winter to link again with the S&C without Rambling Guides at selected stations on the S&C. Although the true reason maybe just that using this service from Preston for example made a Sunday Trip up the S&C with lunch at Carlisle and in winter a bit of snow spotting all for the cost of approx £20 with a railcard. Odd that or am I just cynical. The people of the area are lobbying for a link to Skipton / Leeds by reinstating this route along with opening of the stations beyond Clitheroe its there already.
👍
This is sensational !!!
Thank you.
As a now retired main line driver I used to 'sign' York to Scarborough. I loved the semaphore signals and Falsgrave Box. Wonderful memories.
I took some night shots of the Falsgrave box. Only later did I find out that the shots were taken in the last 3 hours of it's usage. Part of the gantry was re-located to the north end of Grosmont station.
It is a lovely line, still mechanically signalled I believe. The Whitby Middlesbrough line should never have been closed. I have walked the line from Whitby to Scarborough.
👍
Stunning old video, the old line from Scarborough to Whitby was one of the most scenic in the country. If not the best. I lovs steam trains! ❤
👍
Enjoyed.
👍
This excellent so pleased we have a record of this era.
👍
So many people milling around on the track. Not something that happens today . . .
'elf and safety....
Loved this vid as I traveled to Hornsea several times before closure. Swine is quiet near the station but has only a tiny group of houses - very little trade for the railway.
👍
Love your videos especially this one that includes Scarborough and the around areas as it my home brilliant stuff 😀
Thank you.
Great video on how things where 😊 Shame the madness of politicians chopped it all up 🥲
Actually it was the lack of use that chopped it all up. The private car was the biggest culprit.
👍
I was there in 1968 for the re opening of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. My father was the guard on the first train out of Keighley. Such a shame the GN line was closed.
👍
Brilliant stuff. I'm old enough to remember all this!
👍
Wonderful ❤it
👍
This film is a good companion to Philip Benham’s NYMR book, free at Internet Archive.
This line and the mkt.weighton to york line would seriously improve conditions too and from york to hull as there are times when the A1079 CANNOT COPE WITH THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC ON IT.
👍
I so wish I could go back in time with my iPhone and ride that DMU railtour!
Me too!
Great video. I heard correct that the intercity 225 was formed of 8 coaches but I counted 9.
Thank you. Not sure about the coach formation sorry...
I well remember Hellifield in the 1960's but at this distance in time it is distressing to see the sheer neglect of steam locomotives. Perhaps in those days we simply accepted it!
👍
Thanks , very interesting .
👍
what an absolute gem.if meltham etc open now would be real asset. elf and safety would throw a wobbler here lol
👍
Just love all this so good 👍❤️😊
👍
They did a marvelous restoration job on Hellifield Station in the 90's. Before that, it had got into a really dilapidated state!!
👍
Superb that film of a pair of 9fs was amazing
👍
Excellent, thanks for posting.
👍
Sad to see how run down n dirty the steam locos had got by thistime
Yep, on their way out...
Travelled from Blackburn to Hellifield many a time in early 60's. The highlight had to be the "Thames Clyde" and the 'Waverley' steam hauled in those days. Thank you for posting
👍
Stunningly good, much appreciated posting.
👍
