Argument to Beethoven's 5th
No cue cards, no teleprompters, and no second takes--legendary funnyman Sid Caesar pioneered live television sketch comedy with his 1950s sitcoms Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour. This classic sketch is "Argument to Beethoven's 5th," Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray play a married couple in a argument with pantomimed action and the dialogue is classic music.Enjoy!

    Absolutely brilliant. I was totally absorbed. I loved especially the "yes" and "no" back-and-forth, and the point at which Nanette very clearly mouthed "my mother!" giving context to at least the first part of the argument.

    I saw it when it was broadcast on "Your Shows of Show." It's just as funny today and I'll be rewatching many more. (Aug 8, 2024)

    Can anybody lipread what they're saying (apart from the obvious 'yes' and 'no' bits)?

    My word, why haven't a bunch of other comedians stolen this, as they have everything else Sid Caesar ever did. They wouldn't be 10% as good, but 10% would seem like millions to most people who watched.

    Still one of the best interpretations and commentary on Beethoven's Fifth, opening movement.

    Haha...though I think there are perhaps some other pieces that would suit it better...not sure I can think of one, though...perhaps something by Prokofiev...

    • @archangecamilien1879
      @archangecamilien1879 5 років тому

      Ok, haha...I don't know about the piece itself being the most suited to the whole idea, but the way they choreographed it is fitting...

    • @archangecamilien1879
      @archangecamilien1879 5 років тому

      I mean...it really fits, the way they did it...but the piece in itself might be a little too grandiose for something like that...there might be something by Prokofiev, perhaps in his Romeo and Juliet suite, that fits this much better...

    • @archangecamilien1879
      @archangecamilien1879 5 років тому

      Hell...there might be something by Haydn...I just feel like something about something like this should sound less grandiose...well, not always, I guess, especially if the culmination of a conflict that started since quite some time, perhaps...but it should sound petty, haha...strings alone might do the trick...

      There's a tad more to out than that: add it to more innocence and a greater attention span - collectively, in any case - than today and perhaps you'll be a tad more forgiving.

    Sid Caesar was my role model or idol as a kid. Loved this show immensely. One reason I went into acting was because of him. A genius in many ways.
