Fishing my small brook after the storms of December 23
Переглядів 3745 місяців тому
For those who have been following me for a while you will know that by my camp there was a major storm in December 2023 . I finally got the time to go in there and investigate the damage to the brook itself. I am curios on how it will effect the brook trout population.

I had an excellent time fishing Grand Lake Stream this past work. It was incredible. The fish were on and the catching was good too. I also went out when it got busy on the stream to a small river that was filled with smallmouth bass. lets start 2024 off with a bang!

Fly fishing Sebastian Inlet is best at night on an outgoing tide trout in the winter and snook in the summer
@@rmh9er I’m probably going back down sometime very soon and I’m going to give it another go
I grew up in Rumford but rarely fished in the Androscoggin river due to excess pollution (back then). It's great to see that decades of cleaning it up have revitalized the fishing.
@@stevephilbrick1237 I’d go as far as to say that it’s my favorite place to fish.
@@eastcoastflyfisherma I'm spoiled. I live near the main branch of the Penobscot river in Orono. A Smallie haven.
@ I caught my first smallmouth right around there when I was a kid
Fished there the second to the last week of the season this year for a couple days.. water was very warm and the smallmouth/fallfish were super active, the trout and salmon not as much as I’d hoped. Seems to be a better spring fishery?
@@kylejacques7753 it’s a good spring fishery, I’m pretty sure that the overwhelming majority of the fish go to the lower river in the fall and it’s closed to fishing in the fall.
There are rivers named rapid river in many states. Which are you in?
@@drewpackman2929 Maine
Great video man. Liked and subscribed to the channel for future videos. Keep up the good work and tight lines
good video. Like that LL! way to hang in there in the rain on the first day. been there lol

What river is this and what part are fishing at
Man thank you SOO much for sharing all this info. I typically fish the east and west outlet of the kennebec but I’m going to try making it over to the rapid the end of September. Could u suggest a good nymph for fall fishing, maybe a dry dropper? High vis caddies with a pheasant tail below it? Thanks again
@@scottbuck9348 I almost never fish a dry dropper rig. And the only time I do is on under pressured fish. My go to fall setup is a nymph rig alternating between caddis and mayfly nymphs of various sizes. Always one large and one small. I also fish streamers .
I've boated and canoe Mosselookmeguntic. Scouted Richardson lake in Andover. It is a sweet area.
@@scottandvon it’s an amazing area
i started going here at 14yrs i'm 70 now i think i will have my ashes spread here. Has not changed much but more people. At 14 I paid a guy from South Arm camp grounds 5$ to boat me over to Middle Dam and pick me up before dark. I think my forite place in the world
@@dpgalla2759 I love that! Thanks for sharing
So good to see that the upper Andy. is still doing well...Much respect to the fly fisher and to the bow hunters...Both are forms of art...What's the deal with the phone? Cheers from Auburn.
@@scottandvon thanks much. I suspect that the phone is from the storm last winter and it just got washed into the river
So dude...first n 2nd cast you catch yellow perch. Non native species that got thier start in Haley pond in Rangeley. Never catch and release perch or god forbid bass in the Rangeley lakes watershed. Kill them and feed to the Eagles. You releasing them is akin to illegal stocking of an evasive species. The watershed your fishing is brook trout and salmon habitat. Thks and hv a good day. Rb
I was taught that you put you thumb in their mouth and bend the head back and it snaps their neck right away. Sometimes the eagles will see you and come take them out of the water and eat them. I was on the rapid last August, the streams were so full of water the fishing everywhere else was pretty tough.
@@spennykcn that’s interesting. When fishing in appropriate places and I do catch and release I always hold them completely vertical because of that. It’s a good idea for the future
works on brookies for sure
Is that pond in the river?
yes just above
Enjoyed the video. Really good camera work. Heading up that way in a few days. Hope the conditions won't be too poor this time of year.
@@petercathain3326 thank you very much.
Nice slow video for a slow time of year. Maybe the storm dug out some new pools further up the stream? 🤔
insane that there’s fish in there. looks super fun
@@ReginaldJeremy in the past it was super filled with them
Nice videos, just found your channel. I have fished all of these western Maine spots. I think you balance showing some great spots without showing where they are. Question, where are the "red markers" that close off near where you are fishing in July? I would expect the water is too warm by then anyway.. Also I think your "English Tudor" camp is pretty sweet! 😁
@@neilfitch I don’t know of any warm water closed sections. There are red markers near dams that restrict where you can fish due to the fish stacking there. I almost never fish for trout in July and August due to water temperatures. There are a few small streams that I fish that stay cold all year though. I generally fish for smallmouth in the summer. I have had a few complaints about showing the exact spots I fish. It’s a hard balance to make a video that’s interesting to watch without showing where I am or describing where I am. I’m mostly fishing places that people know of or have fished themselves. I have been keeping to the rule that John Girrach uses, if you can cast across it don’t name it.
@@neilfitch also thank you for the kind words
@@eastcoastflyfisherma I was talking about the P in the R being closed in the summer. There are red markers (somewhere) that show where the no fishing zone starts. I fished this spot this spring, and also slogged down the other path/stream to the "lower" area. I'm going to a Western Maine Bottom release tail-water eeearly Friday. Could still be a few fish before it warms up...
@@neilfitch ahh, I remember that they are supposed to be there now. I just don’t fish that area when you need to know. Good luck this week.
Could never find a spot to wade for an old timer
By the boat launches there is easy wading
And fish
Thanks
Invasive?
Smallmouth were not native to Maine. They wound up in the rapid river system in the 90’s I believe. There was a crash in the brook trout population then. They have bounced back, but the fisheries department wants the removed from the system
@@eastcoastflyfisherma okay thanks for answering
@@mattstringer4966 no problem

Paracite from bird droppings.... Ok to eat if cooked well. Though w/ bird flu now, I wouldn't chance it.

Place looks real familiar. Beautiful fish.
Well done my friend.
Nothing like it, What kind of flies were you using? If you don't mind me asking.
Nothing like it? What do you mean? I was using all different streamers. Some bigger types , clousers and a marabou black ghost
@@eastcoastflyfishermanothing like it as in there’s nothing like being on the water in woods.
Great video. I enjoyed seeing the camp and the dining area. Makes me homesick man.
❤❤❤
Thanks much. It was great. I loved the weather as well, cool and rainy. Perfect New England spring!
If you folks keep showing all the fishing spots in Maine on the internet the brook trout and salmon will take a big hit after making a big comeback in the last ten years.
Pan shot to really show you the location. Love it.
🎣
Nice fish..I have to get back to the Rapid used to stay at Aldro's camp but that is closed now..
Isn’t Lakewood an Option?
Oh my God dude. I know where you are but don’t tell anyone else. People from away will be stacked there with spinning gear
Shhhh. But most that fish there know where it is too. You should definitely see the video I’m editing as we speak. I went up to Grand Lake Stream and SLAYED the salmon. It’s probably the best video I’ve done so far!
Try inlet quantum quincy and Thompson s
Incredible
Loved seeing your reaction
Thanks much
Way super cool!!! Awesome Dan thank you, hope to see you and that country soon!!!
Would be nice if you'd stop posting, or at least stop so fully listing your location. You show an incredible lack of intelligence and respect by burning up spots that are so special.
I lived in Sebastian for about 40 years and fished all over the river. If you ever get there again a good place to wade fish is go south of the inlet bridge until you come to the end of the mangrove trees on the east side of the road and you have a long clear stretch of the river on the east side. Park where the mangroves start and wade north towards the inlet. That whole area towards the inlet and way out into the river is only waist deep or less. Be sure and shuffle your feet for stingrays. I'm heading up to the Moose lake area in May. Plan on staying until fall fishing the area. Another good area to wade fish for snook, reddish and trout is just south of the Sebastian River Bridge on the east side there is a pullout on the east side. Park there and go down the hill to the river(the hill is actually a huge mound of oyster shells the Indians piled up there hundreds of years ago.) When you get to the river walk south along the shore until you get near the docks.i usually waded about half the docks length from shore and cast into wards the shore and towards the ends and all along the docks. The snook like to lay up under the docks. I enjoy your videos on the Maine fishing.
A great video with big brookies guys in other states can only dream about.
Its a great place to be
I notice you have a little trouble removing the hooks, Have you ever considered barbless hooks, especially with those little trout?
I use barbless hooks most of the time, but always pinch at a minimum. Possibly a tiny bit of the barb snags a little.
Was the feeder stream at the beginning of the video the Peabody?
it isn't. I don't even know where that is
I’ve caught a 5 lb smallies in this area
ohh yeah
I would like to take you on a new adventure, into Big Island! Mfgc I know every pond, and yes their stupid rules!
That’s brutal, so sorry for you. Will it be fixed by next year?
There are a few camps in my area and we have a road association. We are going to be having a meeting to discuss what is going to happen. Most likely we are going to have the work done in the spring. A little work was already done to divert water to minimize continued erosion. It’s probably going to be a rough start next season
I feel for you….how is it in the north woods of Maine you have to fight for a spot to fish? Great lookin brookies up there!
The fish there are great, anywhere you have a realistic shot at a 3+ lb brookie that you can drive to attracts lots of people
@@eastcoastflyfisherma I’ll have to get up there one day, I did fish the androscoggin in Errol this summer, lots of fun catching small brookies . Thanks !
