I'm Tessa, an artist from the UK creating semi-abstract watercolour portraits and other paintings. I'll be posting tutorials, real-time paintings, and other videos about my creative process.
Choosing A Colour Palette. Painting in weird colours & colour theory watercolour tutorial
I often get asked how I choose my colour palettes and make them look cohesive, despite using seemingly random colours. Well, in this tutorial I hope to give some insight into how I choose them and make them work! This isn’t a full tutorial as such - but I’ll explain some of the important things you should understand when starting to paint with bright colours. Bear in mind that I'm self-taught, and that the best way to learn is through practice!
NB: I filmed this back in 2023 so it's a little rough - please be kind! But constructive feedback is welcome!
Please let me know if you like this sort of video, and I’ll talk more about choosing specific colour palettes!

Beginner Watercolour Tutorial | The Basics Pt 1| Easy Watercolour Painting Techniques
Beautiful, any tips that can help me i just started painting and i want to get better
@@All48obss thank you! At the start I'd recommend just trying a bit of everything, practicing, experimenting, watch a few tutorials (I have a couple!) but not too many - don't overwhelm yourself. Get used to using the materials and play around with them without focusing too much on the end result. I think the best way to learn is trying new things. What medium are you working in? Watercolour?
Your art is amazing!! ❤

@_tkeh_ I love drawing and this is my first year love the process I would love to be like you 😉💓💓
@@ayamohamed4212 well it's all about practice! When you start it can be quiet overwhelming - there are so many mediums to try. But just keep working on it and you'll find what you love in no time 😊
@@_tkeh_ I will thanks ♥️♥️♥️

It looks AMAZING ❤
@@LPSmidnightmagic thanks so much 😊
Love the colour palette of this one! I saw in the other comment that you use arches cotton hot press paper- such a good paper! I prefer cold press, but arches is such a dream to work on. Do you happen to know if their hot press paper holds as much water as their cold press? I’ve always been curious!
@@elijah304 thank you! It doesn't hold water as well, no, as you might expect for a hot pressed paper. But I don't think it does badly - as you can tell - I like to paint like I'm using cold pressed paper and just deal with the warping later 😊
I do not fear warping, that’s what a big stack of books is for anyway! It’s been years since I’ve tried hot press, maybe it’s time to give it another chance 😅 thanks for the info!!
@elijah304 a big stack of books and a slightly damp sponge always does the trick! Definitely do. I think the way granulating paints and blooms work on hot pressed looks much nicer than cold - the smoothness makes the contrast ever better 😊

@ oooooOOOO I have so many granulating colours- now I’m definitely going to have to get some hot press arches!
What kind of paper do you use ? Its so amazing ❤❤❤
@@ayamohamed4212 this paper is Arches hot pressed 300gsm! I prefer hot pressed papers with not very much texture 😊
@_tkeh_ ok thanks I can find it online or in store
@ayamohamed4212 it should be widely available! It is an expensive paper, but very good. I would always recommend a 100% cotton paper if you can find and afford it as they are much better. If you're unsure about a brand feel free to ask!
@@_tkeh_ thanks can you recommend me your first sketch in watercolour so I can try it
@@ayamohamed4212 do you mean a good first painting to try? I have a tutorial for some watercolour techniques if that's helpful!
Its a very nice painting but some distinction between ger hair and the flaring could be better - not hating, i could never do anything like this and am very impressed at your job. Keep up good work
@@midasman3806 thanks! I appreciate the feedback, but it was really quite intentional for there not to be any distinction between them, as if she is part of it or coming through it 😊
Because it's so fantastic ❤❤❤

@Being_in_a_Shape thank you! 😊
I'm completely new to watercolour, and this video is one of the best I've seen thus far in teaching the fundamentals, thank you so much for filming and sharing this. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this series
@@ZedShah thank you so much for your kind words! I have just recently uploaded a second tutorial, looking at some more abstract techniques that might also be of interest to you!
@@_tkeh_ Thank you for the heads-up. You should seriously consider creating a detailed course for beginners. I have watched many watercolour UA-cam videos over the past couple of months, and yours was by far the easiest to follow. Do you offer any such courses or tuition?
@@ZedShah truly?? That's so nice to hear. At the moment I don't offer courses or anything, however I have been in talks with someone about starting an online course (but that wouldn't happen for months!). I also plan to continue uploading here - are there any watercolour topics in particular that you think I should cover? 😊
@ The issue I've encountered with most watercolour tutorials is that they assume I already know the absolute basics, but I don't. In this video, for example, you demonstrated fundamental brush techniques that I've not seen anyone else mention. Therefore, I believe a series of videos covering the absolute fundamentals would be fantastic. This could include the types of brushes, how to store and clean them, paint mixing, and how to approach painting itself. For instance, I find it difficult to know what paint to apply first and how to proceed, among other things
@@ZedShah okay I will take all of that into account! I suppose a lot of the time the focus is on the painting process, when actually there is a lot to do before that. I'll try to make a video on this soon 😊
Love this! Its so creative, I've missed seeing creative art 🩷💙
