This makes me feel pretty nostalgic because back in the early 2010s when I was just a little kid, I was at a railway museum looking at a big beautiful black steam train on display, and while it was standing still, I heard the sound of railroad crossing bells ringing in the distance, and sure enough a train came by blowing its whistle, of course, I am not used to loud train horns. 🚂🚃🚄🚅🚆🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🚟🚠🚡💺🧳🛤🛎🔔🔊🏫🌁🏙🚨🚥🚦🛑🚧🕰🕑

I live in West Sacramento about 6 blocks away from Old Sacramento and the California Railway Museum. There is a 4-8-4 Santa Fe non operational steam locomotive and tender on outdoor display and a wonderful 2-10-4 Santa Fe non operation steam locomotive and tender on outdoor display. One can walk up and touch them. They have all their access points covered over and keeping in high traffic areas does seem to cut down on vandalism. I love going over to observe them. I loved seeing this locomotive #3463 and maybe one day a better display outcome can happen for it. As it is now the cab is open and people will pilfer parts so that would be a great place to start. Also placing it in a high traffic area may help on vandalism as it does in Sacramento.

I'm old enough to remember Steam Engines. They literally lived and breathe. I lived at the east end of a lake and the trains went through on the west end. I can still hear the echo of them wheezing through in the night and see the smoke puffing above the forest. 👊😎👍

I remember going to the convention center in Topeka back in the late 80’s when the ATSF 3463 was on display and beautifully preserved. It’s really a shame it’s been allowed to deteriorate.

Worked on the stove line at Coleman's Wichita plant way back in 1994 for a short time though, I was only a temp.worker

Those horrible, finicky sobs!! You hated them ....even when they worked!! But like the smell of moldy canvas tents we used in Scouts they're a treasured memory!!

Very handsome 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive preserved by the Santa Fe rr, it must have been an awesome sight to see these engines in passenger service back during the steam era.

I saw this locomotive in Topeka in the late 90s. It was residing in an area just off the parking lot south of the city convention center. At that time, they were attempting to restore it. The engineer’s side of the tender had just been freshly repainted and lettered. Now I see that it’s all painted over. There was a volunteer working on it when I was visiting, and he actually allowed me into the fencing. He actually let me climb up on the running boards on the fireman’s side to look at the number on the sand dome. We were trying to determine if the lettering was actually white or silver. It was difficult to tell because it was so weathered. It’s so sad to see this in such a state of disrepair now. This magnificent locomotive needs to be preserved.

Santa Fe locomotive 3463 is in very rough shape and I really would love to see this locomotive be rebuilt/ restored and returned back to operation again. It's a shame that the 3463 doesn't have a shed built around it as this would protect the engine from vandalism, and the harsh weather conditions that take their toll on equipment sitting outside.

Some railroad museum and other related train restoration organizations must think "saving a steam locomotive" means letting it sit some more.
