Greetings from DFW Airport!
What a thrill to see the pews almost full!! Beautiful, well organized service. Extraordinary music as per usual. Steven Cooksey Ph.D. (organist First Pres.1966--1968)
Amazing choir
Thankful for this video to include us all in this beautiful liturgy. God bless Jerusha and all those who have helped love her into her full being, especially her family, her ministry colleagues, and her teachers and mentors. ❤
A joyous day for God's people!
Very nice concert! Thank you! ⛪
Where is the Cross displayed in this sanctuary? Is it suspended above our viewpoint or completely missing?
Bravo!!
Glad to be a part of a church that seeks to be a witness to a loving Creator and a loving community!
Love the rainbow of colorful umbrellas! Can we call a big bunch of umbrellas a "pride of parasols?!"
Blessings from Westminster Presbyterian in Portland Oregon
Well done. Great selections. Nice to hear this unique organ.
Great video. My second great grandfather, Rev. Wm. McCarer, was pastor of the Walnut Street PC starting in 1849 and retiring in 1868. This was around the time this church was being conceived and constructed. He came out of retirement to assist in this churches' mission work. Living In KY, I plan on visiting one day.

Thanks so much!
Where's this place
GLORIOUS music!!!! Good to see some familiar faces too!!
Merry Christmas
Beautiful
I would like to say that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Kevin's brother worships at my church in Gibsonia, PA, and he shared with us the news. This must have been a difficult service to lead. But it seems that you have a vital and effective church family there. Know that we are thinking of you now and as you move forward.
Thank you for your kind words.
Great message, Kevin. We should never be afraid of trying something new and finding our purpose.
Kevin, you've outdone yourself again!
lol that’s mee
Too bad we couldn't get a better view of the organ. What's up with that?
You mentioned Will C. MacFarlane as the editor of one of the pieces. He was organist of St. Bart's, NYC in the early 1900s. Do you know his anthem, "Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us"? Immense fun.
How wonderful the harpsichord and the violin sound. I really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing
John Edgar Roberts (b. 1890) was successively organist in Whitchurch and Wallingford in England and Forres in Scotland. He published his "Festal March" in 1924.
Thanks for this information, John. I'm not sure why this didn't rise to the top of my online search. Do you know the Melanie Bonis pieces?
Charity Boyles wasn't the only one! The band which played "Nearer, my God, to thee" when the "Titanic" went down included Sigfrid Karg-Elert's best friend as one of the string players. To commemorate this he wrote "Improvisation on 'Nearer, my God, to thee' W17 (available on IMSLP) in memory of his friend. The psalm "Out of the depths" also features as a motif.
Do you know Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722), Biblical Sonata No. 1: The Battle between David and Goliath?
I'm used singing "Spanish Hymn" to the text "Come, Christians, join to sing, Alleluia! Amen!"
We are too! Certain choir and congregation members do a Y-M-C-A-like hand motion on the "Amen" each time it comes, spelling out O-Hi-O! We have fun in church here. Thanks for watching.
Bells are so beautiful!
You are right that Firmin Swinnen intended his organ arrangement for a much larger organ. He was the organist-in-residence to the DuPont family whose massive 1930 Aeolian organ is still in situ at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, near Philadelphia.
I see quite a lot of promotion of that organ and have friends in the area who play it. It's spectacular! Thanks for filling in the details.
The French harmonium uses pressure, whereas the American reed organ uses suction. A consequence of this for the harmonium is that the harder you pump the louder it gets, making the harmonium more expressive than either the American reed organ or the pipe organ. I used the play the Arne piece myself; it is a lot more difficult than one might think from the music at first glance!
Thanks for clearing up my pressure/vacuum confusion, and for your understanding!
Rosalie Bonighton sadly died in 2011 after a long battle with cancer.
I saw that she had died on an Australian music website, which lists many of her, and many other composers' works.
Graham Cullen is such a class act, always a joy to listen to him!!
A very uplifting recital as usual, and as usual also very informative. I had no idea that Juliette Folville lived part of her life in Bournemouth, and it would be interesting to know more of what she got up to there.
Glad you discovered Kate Boundy.
Thanks, John. I downloaded a bunch of scores from your site the other day. You've probably noticed i have a particular interest in promoting the music of women composers, particularly those who have been completely ignored. If you have any leads on others, I know a number of young women organists who are actively searching this material out. Thanks!
Thank you for introducing us to Angela Becker, of whom I had not previously heard.
You can find quite a few of Emma Louise Ashford's organ works on my website: spellerweb.net/poindex/Ashford/Ashford.html
Yes, thank you so much! That's where I found "Lead Kindly Light" after going down a rabbit hole of exploring women composers for the organ. I was so pleasantly surprised to find 112 pieces by Emma Louise Ashford on your website. You must have a connection?
Thank you my compatriots for a wonderful program. I hope that 2021 will prove to be a better year for us all. At least it has the advantage of being shorter by one day than 2020. Happy New Year!
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and yours!
Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you!! Thanks for watching!
Thankyou for your kind words about me. Your recitals bring much comfort in these miserable covid days. In today's recital I particularly enjoyed the second Vierne improvisation, which I had never heard before. FYI the hymn-tune Rhosymedre is named after the village of Rhosymedre (meaning beautiful) in north-east Wales near Wrexham. Regards, John L. Speller, D.Phil. (Oxon.), Port Huron, Michigan.
Thank you for watching our offerings, and for joining us from Michigan. We appreciate your presence with us! Take care and stay safe!
I see that Peter has an outstanding von Beckerath organ at FPC in Nashville, and wish I had known about it the last time I was in Nashville. I did visit the Juget-Sinclair at Second Presbyterian.
I’d be happy to show you the organ when you’re back in Nashville. Hopefully, the pandemic will be over as well!
I used to love Sir Herbert Brewer's 1920 Harrison organ at Gloucester and thought that replacing it with the HNB organ in 1971 was an act of barbarism; Nicholson's have certainly improved things a lot, but I still prefer the old organ.
It's character really changed in 1971 - and then again with the most recent rebuild. It does have some beautiful voices.
In these days of "distress among nations with perplexity" your recitals provide some welcome calm.
I love the James Bremner piece, which I had never heard before. I continue to wonder about the Linley voluntary since, before the valve trumpet, trumpet voluntaries were invariably in C or D major; the Linley piece is in A major, and I wonder if it has been transposed. When I suggested this my friend Barbara Owen told me she doesn't think it was, so perhaps I am spouting nonsense!
John Christopher Moller played the dedicatory recital on the organ of Zion Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, on October 10 and 11, 1790. The organ, which had 3 manuals and pedals with 34 stops, and was the magnum opus of David Tannenberg of Lititz, Pennsylvania, the leading organ builder in the USA at the time. Sadly, the church and organ were destroyed by fire on December 26, 1794, and the instrument was not replaced until 1811.
I think Kendall's assertion that the voluntaries were by "Masters" of the instrument should be taken at face value. There were numerous manuscripts of such pieces circulating in the eighteenth, intended for students of the organ to play. This particular voluntary is very much in the style of John James (d. 1745).
