Returning some Returnables with the Tomra T-9 at Kiwi Langenes.
Filmed on the 13th of September 2024.
These were given to me by my grandparents to redeem. I was going to check the rejects here anyway, and figured i may as well redeem these.

Filmed on the 11th of September 2024. I collected these returnables today and wanted to get them returned. One bottle wouldn’t cooperate, the other 44 went through. I ended up redeeming 44 containers for a total of 88 Norwegian Kroner.

Filmed on the 6th of September 2024. While going to this location to check the rejects and do some manual redemption, i saw this bag sitting on the floor clear full of bottles. This was a tad rushed as my phone’s battery was low, and i wanted to document this awesome find. I made 51kr (just over 5 USD) from these bottles. The thing i threw in the rejects bin was a steel corrugated food can, pos...

Is that Danish the ingen pant?
Nope. Most likely USA.
Ok thanks
@@dogeteam123 I save all my Danish returnables and redeem them in Denmark - because they’re not accepted either. Some Swedish and taxfree stuff is accepted, but has no Norwegian deposit, therefore no refund.
Boutta 3d print a fuck ton
Pffft, good luck with that, there’s material recognition and compaction monitoring 😆
Well done how your returnable going and bloopers
Bloopera? Did you find a blooper? 😆 At some point once more stuff is out i may dig through it all and make a blooper reel out of it 🤣
@@TruckFan542 I got a lot of road kills
I don’t get that many flat returnables anymore, but a few here and there
Cut your nails.
Pffft, didn’t even notice that 😆 blooper
Thays $0.10 usa
1kr is probably around 10c yeah
For them money buy some nailclippers
I’m such a doofus sometimes 😆 missing trivial things like that
@@TruckFan542 dont worry, just take care of yourself boss
@@WatchingTriple I have been insanely busy/kaput these last few days, so by the time i can do things like this I’m tired as a trucker 😆
Update: These were manually redeemed at Meny.
3 euros??? In Hong Kong, it's 10 cents Hong Kong dollar. Converting to euro its 0.012
I am not getting 3 euros, I’m probably getting more like 30 eurocents. (2 Norwegian Kroner for <500ml and 3 Norwegian Kroner for >50lml)
3 euros!?!?! Its 20 eurocent in the netherlands
Isn’t it 10 eurocents? Also i am not getting 3 euros, I’m probably getting more like 30 eurocents. (2 Norwegian Kroner for <500ml and 3 Norwegian Kroner for >50lml)
@@TruckFan542it's 15 cents for small bottles and cans and 25 cents for large bottles
It’s not euro.. its NOK (KR) So about 0.25 euro
There’s no flat rate on what NOKis in €, it’s extremely jumpy.
Nerds. The payout price on the bottles stays the same, so if you’re not going to invest in waste bottles; the 15/25 cent price example is a fair comment
U throw it down far enough to accept it
All that will do is cause problems and possibly error out the system.
@@TruckFan542 nah not in Denmark at least
@@First_person_shooter And this ain’t denmark, it’s Norwsy. Also i would probably not get a refund for the container.
Can you explain how it works with cans from different countries? Here in the netherlands you cannot return german cans
Here, Swedish cans/bottles are sometimes accepted. Other countries’ returnables are rejected. (Danish, German, etc) Occasionally certain taxfree cans are accepted too. Stuff that is foreign but accepted does not give out a refund, since no deposit was paid on it here, however certain Swedish containers also have a Norwegian deposit and therefore do refund that deposit (which is double the Swedish deposit 😆)
Plastic bottle goes into the same chute as the cans.... Nice... At that point just stop the return schemes if you dont do anything with the recyclables.
They are sorted after collection here. Trucks take the material to Infinitum’s plants, which sort and bale the material. Some machines like T-70’s and T-63H’s do sort the stuff though. (These T-9’s do not need to do that as they use mix crushers, unlike T-70’s and T-63HCp’s which have a dedicated compactor for each material.)
In the US we only do things well if they make money. If they are things that are socially beneficial we either underfund it and forget about it or, in the case of recycling, provide no reason to do it. At least not on a small scale.
Unfortunately that’s the case, yeah. A few US sates have bottle deposits but their machines are hella picky compared to how ours are configured.
I remember these things from my time studying in Norway :)
They’re basically everywhere - any grocery store will have one.
You getting 8 cents a can
Indeed. For anything <50lml i grt 2kr, for anything >500ml i get 3kr.
Great video use a long screw driver to straighten the can works for me
Yeah i do “untaco” the flat ones.
You seriously do realize that the amount of energy you consumed to dispose of the can, the paper and the ink, far outweigh any environmental impact you might have had recycling the can😂😂😂 Having said that, if you did it for the money🫡🫡🫡
Eh, it’s hard to explain how it all works, but I’ll give a few corrections: -No ink was used, the machine has a thermal printer. -While yes, the machine uses electrons, it’s still a lot less than even landfilling it. -Deposit return systems produce very clean material that can ACTUALLY be recycled effectively, unlike single stream recycling which is very impure. Fun fact: Trucks that drop off products to the store take the empties for processing instead of returning empty, thus saving fuel.
Youre right about a lot of recyclables however aluminum cans specifically are incredibly efficient to recycle
@@Borbborbborb Indeed they are! Iirc it takes the same amount of energy to make 1 can from virgin (new) aluminum to make 20 cans from recycled aluminum.
Clearly states that you are to put them in bottom first, maybe that’s your issue.
Nope, that’s only with bottles, not cans. Also generally doesn’t apply with Tomra T-9’s.
I just looked it up. GOOGLE says 100 Krone is $9.40 dollars 🇺🇸 😊
It’s around there yeah, usually more like 10 USD as the exchange rate is quite jumpy.
You can also hand it in here in the Netherlands 😀
Yep! I’ve found a few Dutch returnables in reject tubs. Actually the first can i redeemed had a Dutch deposit on it, in addition to Swedish and Norwegian deposits.
It’s in Norway
Indeed it is.
How much does it give and how much is it to mail things there? They took away our can recycler due to people cheating and stealing
Don’t really know what the question is here, but the rates are 2kr for <500ml and 3kr for >500ml If people wee cheesing the machines that much, they were probably junk machines.
4 dollars for two cans damn how much is it in the store 10 dollars a soda??
Norwegian Kroner os not CLOSE to USD. 1 NOK is about 10 US cents. So i get about 20c per can. Containers over 500ml are worth around 30c.
You are supposed to keep the labels on so the machine can read the barcode
I know that 😆 The bottle was in the reject bin to the right of the machine.
Did you know all you need is the barcode to fault the machines.
Yeah sometimes they get confused. I did however redeem a bottle with no label and get the deposit!
Im very confused by this.
This is a Norwegian machine, and the bottle is Swedish. Therefore, it has no deposit and is not accepted.
NORWAY! Also funny thing is that i think a few machines in Sweden accept Norwegian pant (From what i remember, can be wrong though) but not the other way around.
There are a bunch of returnables with Norwegian and Swedish deposits. Iirc, 7up, Powerade, TRST and some beers do that
Our machines do take some Swedish stuff like the 330ml Pepsis and i believe Aqua d’Or, as well as some random things like lemon-lime Prime cans (US) and Taxfree coke cans. But there’s no reward for them, you just get them recycled.
Actually I only use glass only on tomra t-820 on my Sweden 🇸🇪 it’s said it’s allow Glass only so people already drink glass that why
Norway gas no deposits on glass anymore. I have used a T-820, still need to film one
UPDATE: I was able to get these to go through by inserting them top-first.
We have some similar machines here, but they're called tare-o-matics (taromat). It's a well known tactic for homeless people to fish out recyclable cans thrown in the trash by careless people and turn them in.
I used to “mine” returnables from trashes, but reject dumpsters are more profitable and easier to deal with
We also mostly have Tomra machines with a few RVM Systems units here and there
@@TruckFan542 I've never even heard of RVM... Can only find Tomra machines around
You’re lucky, RVM Systems machines SUCK! Tomra is the best.

The same happens to me all the time. Those damn T-63HCp's!
This TriSort unit is actually very well behaved, that can’s barcode had a printing error which is why it was misbehaving. But the through-wall T-63HCp Duals, i hate those things sometimes. Sometimes very unreliable and they always have the bottom end first crap!
3kr
Yep. That bottle was at a Tomra T-9 and seemed to have some barcode screwiness. TriSort took it just fine.
It should say TriSort, not TruSort. Typo!

After some recent feedback, i will be adding a pinned comment explaining what everything is! Q: What is this machine called and what does it do? A: A reverse vending machine (RVM). These machines take empty bottles and cans and allow you to redeem them for a receipt. This receipt can then be cashed out or used towards your purchase at the store. Q: Where can you find RVM’s? A: Most grocery stores have them. Supermarkets also usually have them. In some places like Australia and the US, they have redemption centers full of the things. Keep in mind not everywhere has a bottle bill / deposit return system. Q: Are these machines reliable? A: If cleaned regularly, serviced and maintained, RVM’s can last for decades. Some stores or machines have their quirks, likbe this one having bin status, which is rare for a Tomra T-9. Q: How does an RVM work? A: There are 3 main types: Spinners: These split the conveyor and spin the returnable round and round to zap it’s barcode before it gets sucked up and squashed. Hoovers: These use a 360-degree scanner, like Tomra’s OneRing to zap the barcodes. Then they suck the returnables up and squash them. Bucket Wheel Excavators: These use a singular wheel to scoop up returnables onto a conveyor, then the process is the same as the Hoovers.

Can we please have like an intro video about what these machines are. I think I get the gist of it, it’s like if the junkyard was a vending machine 😅
They’re known as reverse vending machines, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You stick the empties in the tunnel, they get sucked up and squashed, and then it prints a receipt you take to the checkout and either cash it out or use it to discount your purchase at the store.
However @BobsTheBuild3r i might make an into video later, good suggestion.
@@TruckFan542 do you know why they have to be in tact if they will get crushed anyways? I want to assume it’s fraud avoidance. But wouldn’t it have to be the same material anyways? So it would sort of be no different right?
@@spray_cheese Sometimes you’ll get returnables hat are quite smashed up to go through. They usually only sneeze out the really flat stuff.
This happens all the time since cans were also added to the deposite scheme in the netherlands. Anoying
Cans go through fine here unless they’re really smashed up, even those sometimes go through. For some reason 7up doesn’t behave here.
I find those machines have hard time to read the barcode for all kinds of reasons. Too glossy, too dirty, too wet, too small, not enough contrast, etc. Sometimes flipping the can or denting/flattening the barcode portion do help. And all the codes have to be registered in the machine to accept them.
Yeah they have to be in the database. I’ll eventually try 7up at another Meny location and see what happens there
Happens even when te can of beer is the supermarket's own brand. Just a bad system for collecting cans. Smelly, gross and doesn't work. Better to throw it in a recycling bin as we were used to do.
@@TheShellshock67 Doesn’t happen here (Norway), i know the US has a lot of problems with crap like that occurring. Ireland has some similar problems, and i know there’s been messes in the Netherlands and Germany with deposits like this. We had them since the 1930’s (!!) so we know how to run it. Heck, Norwegian company Tomra made the first reverse vending machine, the Tomra 1A in 1972.
