    In February 2012, in Polk County, Wisconsin, an incident occurred where 81-year-old Stanley Johnson was refilling a small 1-pound propane cylinder from a larger 20-pound tank in his garage. During the process, the smaller tank ruptured, releasing gas that ignited and caused an explosion. His wife, 77-year-old Nancy Johnson, was present in the garage at the time and tragically died at the scene. Stanley Johnson managed to escape and was transported to Amery Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

    I watched your video and I totally hear what you're saying. You're just using the heater to prevent freezing. This is what I used to do with my shop until I started using it more often. When I started using it 6 to 12 hours a day the electricity cost started costing about $400 a month. Now I do have natural gas on my property. So I invested in overhead radiant heater 30,000 BTU. The whole install with the heater cost me just over $2000 Canadian. Now I keep it set at 71° 24 hours a day. This cost me about $30 a month during the heating season. Now, if I were to do this again and build my own shop, I would go with a natural gas boiler and in floor radian heat. Nothing beats the thermal mass of a 10,000 pound piece of cement. Now, if I was in your situation and building a new shop, I would still go with electric floor radiant heating and I would add a shop heater like you have.

    Hey that thing is pretty cool. I've never quite seen a setup like that. The converter plug that it uses is really interesting. I have a Hobart Handler 140 has the option to use gas on it that can make a difference but for a beginner that thing is really sweet. Using flux core wire makes set up so much easier. Have you ever tried your hand at plastic welding? I got a unit really good for plastic gas tanks water tanks anything plastic really. Also makes an excellent heat gun heat gun. Most people haven't heard of plastic welding but it's a thing. If you don't own one I highly recommend adding one to your arsenal. If you want to heat with electricity, the most efficient way is a heat pump. I heat with a mini split ductless unit with a typical COP of 2.5. This means for every watt of electricity I get 2.5 watts of heat. Install one of these in your shop and you will cut your electric bill by at least 50%.

    • @k6outdoors
      @k6outdoors 18 днів тому

      Correct and you also get AC! Buy no means is the unit I have the most efficient when it comes to cost per btu,however I wanted to highlight that using electric in general is not guaranteed to break the bank. I plan to install a minisplit this year so I can enjoy AC and heat. Days like today where it's-5 out and forecast to go to -11f make me nervous to use a minisplit, I'll just have to make sure I buy the best low temp unit i can. Thanks for stopping in!

    @danielmackenzie680 18 днів тому

    You actually keep your garage very cold. This helps with cost a lot as you lose less heat. If you doubled your temp to be comfortable. You would probably triple your costs. Gas or oil would be cheaper in cost per BTU. You have chosen the most convenient. It's a fine choice if you can afford it.

    • @k6outdoors
      @k6outdoors 18 днів тому

      @danielmackenzie680 precisely, i just want it warm enough to keep things from freezing. By no means is a coil induction electric heater the cheapest option to run, it however can be affordable if you are intending to use it like I do. Thanks for stopping in

    • @k6outdoors
      @k6outdoors 18 днів тому

      I forgot to add that LP vs Electric can vary greatly and in my area you could expect to pay around $1.50 for LP vs $3.75 ish for electric for the same btu output. If gas is higher or electric is cheaper then the scales obviously tip.

      @k6outdoors 18 днів тому

      @shawnwagers6061 based on that, it sounds like your heater is running alot to keep it at that temp, somewhere around 6 hours per day on average. I assume the building is well insulated?

    • @k6outdoors
      @k6outdoors 18 днів тому

      @VinceWaechter it definitely depends on cost of the inputs, LP drastically varies depending on location. Using electeic induction heating for a whole home would not be the best route. Electric heatpump with coil assit in extreme cold would be the best option for efficiency

    thumbs up ( I was going to say to put in a heat pump, but by the time you consider the initial investment, for how much electric you use, seems you are doing the most overall best thing ) We use a heat pump in our garage, but it was there when we moved in and until it breaks we will use it. Maybe consider something like a Mr buddy heater just in case the power goes out. I have also found out that Propane at about $3.50 per gallon cost me about the same as electric strip heat How much did it cost you for that interesting, easy to use, high tech heater ( mated to solar ) you are using? We have "paid off" solar also, it was a great investment , ROI, for us.

    • @k6outdoors
      @k6outdoors 19 днів тому

      Hey, i appreciate you stopping in! I too have considered a heat pump/ mini split setup for the shop; i still might as it would be great to have AC out in the shop. Theoretically I would be able to cool and heat it all year for a very affordable price. I have the same scenario here as well, my solar array is paid off and work very well. The heater really isnt specific to solar but its expense to run is 100% offset by our solar panels production for our property. I picked up the original King Electric ECO2 from a local home improvement store (Menards). The ECO2s+ can be found online and was sent to me by King Electric. I was able to pick the heater up for around $600 but its been several years ago, I am however impressed with its performance. Take Care!

    Thank for the great video. I have been trying to decided between an electric heater and propane. I currently have no LP on my property. Looking like electric may be the way to go. Like you said by the time you get a tank and then pay rental, and piping install. Electric I can pull all the permits and do the install myself. Plus no venting and no explosion hazard from fumes.

    DO NOT OVERFILL THAT ONE POUND TANK It has a safety release valve. As the tank warms up, it might build up enough pressure to release gas. If it finds a spark you'll have a fire or explosion. NOTE: That is why it is a violation of DOT laws to transport tanks you have refilled at home. Put some of those in the trunk of a car on a hot day and you can blow the car to hell and back. Whichever brand of tank you buy, weigh it full from the store and never fill it to be heavier than the store bought weight. If you insist on transporting those in a vehicle save the four way plastic restraint and the caps so you can make it appear they are factory, NOT refilled. The fine can be as high as $100,000.

    No way you heated your garage with electric heater for the winter for $150 no way yeah maybe if you kept a thermostat at 45°

      @Poncho758 correct, it's mentioned in the video i set it at 45 , above freezing at all times unless I am out there. Good insulation makes a huge difference. I know for a fact the units run time each month and the utility rates to figure cost. Thanks for stopping in.

      45 degrees is cold as shit. 60 degrees for a shop would be much more comfortable

    It ran 200 hrs. That's not .uch so i assume you only heat the shop when you are in there. Is that correct ?

      @cinderellaslifeadventures7269 200 hours is with the heater set consistently at 45 degrees and also includes if i turn it up when I go out there. For December of 2024 it cycled a total of 35 hours according to ecobee.

    Thank you! I just bought the 2020 model from W-Mart plus some accessories from AMZ and Lowes. This definitely helps with the initial setup.
