If this guy managed to lose a laptop with millions of dollars worth of research data, then its him whose in grave legal trouble. Theyre about to sue his ass and depending on when this video is set, he is also in breach of GDPR or the US equivalent if there is one and so is going to have to fork over his entire net worth in fines.

If I was in the class and stole the laptop I would think "this is great! I just wanted a new laptop but now I know I can sell the info on it to a foreign power or a rival company for millions!"

I've reinstalled the same copy of windows onto different computers (The old computer was being tossed) and I have never gotten a call from windows asking why there was the same copy of windows on the 2 different computers. The guy was a consultant for a multi million dolar project involving the federal government and yet he walks on the campus with sensitive data completely exposed in a laptop computer. But hey lets blame the thief for the integrity of the data! First, if the thief was in that room he would know how to not get caught: just dont turn the damn computer on. Also now he know how value that data was. Second, if the thief is outside of that room and get caught, how can the professor prove that the thief knew about the data??? NIH would have a field day knowing that private secure information was ever stored on a local laptop. This type of secure data should always be saved on servers and accesed through a VPN. Having worked with NIH, this professor should be heavily fined if he did such a thing.
