Reflections from Hurricane Helene: Simulating Climate Impacts and Solutions
In this Climate Solutions Workshop using the En-ROADS Simulator, a powerful yet accessible climate model, discover how today’s actions can help reduce the devastating effects of climate change on our communities and natural environment.
Executive Director Andrew Jones shares his personal experience with Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina, and delves into the trends behind extreme weather events to explore how climate models can help us prepare for them. He also introduces two new graphs in the simulator that demonstrate how climate solutions, such as phasing out fossil fuels and expanding carbon removal, can impact the extinction of endemic species and the decline of marine life.
Developed by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan, En-ROADS is a system dynamics model carefully grounded in the best available science, calibrated against a wide range of integrated assessment model scenarios, and used by over a million people in more than 160 countries.

Dynamics of Renewable Energy Subsidies, Hydrogen Storage, and Emissions Reduction
Переглядів 1639 місяців тому
Why is it that when adding a subsidy to Renewables, greenhouse gas emissions get reduced in the short-term, then increase slightly, and finally get reduced again in the long-term? Subsidizing renewable energy leads to its growth as a larger share of electricity demand, thereby reducing emissions. However, the increase in variable renewable energy from wind and solar requires more energy storage...

This is so so so cool. THANK YOU FOR DEVELOPING SOLUTION ORIENTED simulations. We need to discuss real solutions if we're going to reach real solutions. I had an amazing time doing just that with my fellow NOAA young changemakers in DC in july '24. 🙏🙏
This video showcases how the En-ROADS simulator can facilitate engaging discussions about climate solutions.
This condensed version of the En-ROADS Climate Workshop demonstrates how effectively we can use the simulator to explore and understand climate strategies even in a short timeframe. It’s a great example of how we can make a difference with limited time and resources.
As a participant in the En-ROADS Climate Workshop program, I’m excited to highlight this insightful session from COP 25 in Madrid, where Ellie Johnston, Bindu Bhandari, and Dr. Elizabeth Sawin present the En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator. This workshop provides a valuable opportunity to explore how different climate strategies impact our future. Note that there have been updates to the simulator since this event, reflecting the latest advancements in climate modeling.
This interactive workshop provides a dynamic way to explore and support impactful climate strategies using the En-ROADS simulation model. It’s an excellent opportunity to see how we can collaboratively address climate change.
These Kaya Graphs provide a powerful visual breakdown of the key factors driving CO2 emissions from the energy sector. It's fascinating to see how global population growth, rising GDP per capita, energy efficiency improvements, and the shift towards cleaner energy all interact. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for tackling climate change and shaping a sustainable future. 🌍💡
This is how can we subsidies the efficiency of renewable energy, and innovate new way to reduce climate change around the world.
Yes! Thank you for posting!
Ha! You got here before me!
This is just what we need to establish better, more effective policies at all levels of government. You guys are awesome!

Creating enroad scenarios
En routeing road to climate Vs capitalism and changes
der Ton ist leider etwas knisternd sonst sehr gutes Video für ein wichtiges Thema.
Impressive. What's missing in all the equations is the cost of chosen futures expressed in energy and raw materials units. E.g. when considering direct air capture (DAC) technologies, the astronomical energy requirements to deploy these at scale make them unrealistic as a solution (they make great propaganda, but they are unrealistic as solution). Raw materials also needs to be taken into account. Driving the Renewables slider all the way up produces simulated outcomes that look attractive, but once the associated amount of copper, lithium and other raw materials is taken into account, the same problem as with energy requirement comes up: unrealistic scenarios (the price of copper is already being pushed to record highs due to the energy transition - rising prices can make certain simulation scenario's unrealistic). Conclusion: please add energy and raw materials requirements into the equations. Great work!
Thanks!!
I believe that there is hope for the problem with the younger generation's leadership. I believe that carbon taxing, quicker additional reforestation, and public works that will help the addition of greater amounts of public works that will enhance electrification and/or hydrogen fueled vehicles.
I am trying to see how it works! thank you very much for letting people learn!!!!
Thanks - Perfect timing! I raised this a few days ago. Knowing that current fossil fuel subsidies are specifically factored in is great. Is it accurate to say that taxing fossil fuels is the same as reducing subsidies? Clearly local/national tax policies are not an adjustable variable in a disaggregated model. could you suggest a way of presenting that local element to an audience, when what the domestic end-user sees is high taxation at the fuel pump? To what extent - i.e. dollar for dollar - does moving the carbon tax slider correlate with the fuel tax sliders?. I'm presuming the assumption is they're taxed at the producer end, rather than the consumer end? Great to see the model being so actively developed.
This is so reassuring! Confidence when we step outside the door with the model will go a very long way to presenting it it confidently, and it being received confidently. Virtuous circle!
Drew, you are a wonderful clear presenter, but I would ask just one thing: please STATE what you are clicking on. Remember we are watching this on many different devices, some very small. And we are trying to learn how to lead people through the same thing. So if you would just speak exactly what you are clicking on, that would help so much!
Linda Cheung!

Yo, there is money to be made in the climate business. Nice.
That's a good thing
@@jfreed27Indeed, climate activists are not parasites of society. I repeat, they are NOT parasites. Ok.
I’m looking and I am not seeing unmet demand factored. Isn’t or use of direct thermal energy storage and/or thermal energy direct human justice applications. Are these unfortunately unable to meet in the middle? Or get counted through to this end of the spectrum of the problem solution definition scope? Where might the toggle be for instance for thermal energy networks, which can be as grid stabilizing as nuclear radically improve the security of humans and shunt us off the impending conflicts between “energy efficiency and environmental justice and “energy poverty” - nope nothing there as a priority climate action. What interactions do you have? Built radiant heaters plus humidity from trees and watering that is otherwise marked as great, for cooling as well as the improving small water cycles when added to urban pollution in heat causing ozone that is not due to GHG. Without a full palette of deep systemic actions ( i mean TES (thermal energy storage) its forms, distribution and networking, whether in the form of ground source heat pumps, or phase change thermal batteries above ground, as well as other thermal energy forms, in architecture, in new and old human housing, I am digging and I wish I saw that included in this model for me to use it, Otherwise I’d love to use this tool. Is it excluded because its such a direct approach that monetizing it is not as clear? Please prove me wrong on my disappointment imagining why TES is not included in this very inclusive tool here. The DOE is a TES fan- why isn’t it here? Maybe im a hotheaded thermal nerd and cant see it as fast as I want: maybe you can just point me to the TES here and I just missed it. There are renewables that are not solar and wind. There are renewables in TES that are always on, and don’t grow but shrink scary duck curves and canyon curves, and that actually will amplify the humanly deliverable more, faster of the justices and resiliences of wind and solar. We’re building tons of housing right now. We are building in bad consumption patterns right now. And occupants silently are set to be left holding the bag alone and not be counted. Why cant i find TES here at all?
