HOW 6 YEAR OLDS CHILDREN DESIGNED A PUMPSTATION .... WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM AN ARTIST
About the Artwork
"The idea is simple. The Pump Station design team is to be lead by a group of 6-9 year olds. The pump station will be will be a piece that embodies the inhibitions of youth and the magic of imagination." - Hanna Benihoud
This project stands out for its unique involvement of local youth who were engaged in leading the design process, reflecting Benihoud's inclusive design approach. Through a series of workshops, Benihoud facilitated the collection of ideas from children, which were then integrated into the project with the help of architects, landscape architects, and engineers.
The artwork for the Boundary Road Pump Station features imaginative elements such as gargoyles and a colourful landscape mural. Gargoyles, originating in the medieval period, were designed as ornate waterspouts to divert rainwater away from the sides of buildings, merging practicality with Gothic architectural aesthetics. The Boundary Road Pump Station gargoyles, whimsically designed by children, engage in playful antics while the pump station diligently safeguards the surrounding community. A vibrant painted quilt enveloping both the site and its structures transitions from fluid to orderly patterns, mirroring the pump station's own rhythm of operation. This imaginative approach has resulted in a landmark that is both a functional piece of infrastructure and a testament to the potential of collaborative, inclusive design practices.

Hello, I'm trying to find work here in Miami Fl. I have Bachelors Degree from FIU. I'm tired of being exploited by these Architects for one to two years, and I cannot find a stable position. I need some representation, to become an Architect, so I can afford to become an architect? Most these Architects cannot tie there own shoe laces, and hire others to do their own work. I have ten years of construction experience as a carpenter, and ten years of experience as an Architect on Autocad with CD's, and learned Revit as well at college? I want to be apart of an Architectural Union, so I will have a stable carrier?
If I may ask, what was your expectations before embarking on the journey to be an architect?
I was 17 years old when I applied for architecture school so I don't know how much I thought about it to be honest. I never knew any architects and you don't study it in school. I chose it because I was good at art & maths!
love your work Hanna!
Rogue!
This video is of outstanding quality and definitely deserves more views!! Keep going, this was super helpful. Subcribing xx
That's so kind thank you x
I graduated 2 years ago.. took up some courses ,worked for a year and got laid off...since then i kept trying to work in different companies but the past trauma from my previous company is too much....i quit my second job as well and decided to quit architecture totally but now since I am trying to prepare for another competitive exams something holds me back as if I have purely wasted my 7 years and when i see my other friends still continuing in the field i feel very bad about myself for giving up...does anyone has any suggestions what should I do. Should i go back into architecture ?
There are lots of examples in the video that show there is SO much you can do with a qualification in architecture. Unless you pivot into something completely different you have not wasted your time! And even if you do go into a completely different field, please know life is long and not a race with your peers. It's OK if it takes you longer to find your path. Good luck ❤
@HANNABENIHOUD thankyou so much 💓
This video helped me so much!! Thank you❤
You're so welcome! :)
If anyone wants discouragement on architecture from a an architect I am here to help. But to make it simple , if you are not sure about going or not to architecture, just serve coffees for 3 months in 3 practices and see how the day to day is like. Talk to the people there and really thry to understand what they do on a daily basis. Don’t go to architecture school without really understanding and SEING different architects work. But you you want my honest to the face advice : Run from it as fast you can.
THANK YOU
Thanks for this Hanna, I've been studying / working in architecture for last 13 years and I desperately want to escape to do something more creative
More than 15 years here and just about reaching my limit. Enough.
Awesome coverage!
Way to go! Great info! Thank you 🙏!
Try landscape architecture, much more satisfying than architecture. Trust me.
Are you a landscape architect?
this is so true
Rejection is inevitable, but my (maybe counter-intuitive) advise that always seems to help is--uplift others. When you offer assistance or help someone else out of any kind of jam or problem it transforms your attention and gets you focused on solutions and next steps from a place of generosity and strength. It's a powerful thing!
is there literally any architect that likes being an architect.
Ik dude, I no longer want to be an architect anymore. The only people enjoying their jobs are either the richest architects or people who run their own firms
@ so how do i get really rich?
@@chunkymonkey170 Higher degree, get into Business, work a really long time and climb the ranks, either start your own firm or move firms to get a pay increase
@@jumpy2783 okay but what about getting rich QUICK??
@@chunkymonkey170 In architecture? Heh. Idk about that man.... Well you could do 3D visualizations for people online. You could do any of the alternatives in the video. Also, if you're good at using Blender, you don't even need to stick to Arch-viz. What I'm doing is making a social media presence of a virtual avatar. No, it's not AI (God forbid).
I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this vid. Keep it up
I have an architecture degree and I agree with this message. subscribed
I was so excited to become an architect...not anymore
As a student who wanted to study architecture however wasn't sure in staying in one career forever, following your channel has helped me so much (especially your jack-of all trades video), I wish you luck on your parenting journey! You are who I want to be when I am older :) I am delighted to be your 1000th subscriber.
Thank you for your kind words you've made my day x
You know whats wild it seems like for every career path that exist there's always a video like this one about them
Very good advise you give on the three most important tools to use. I agree 100 percent.
I can relate! I work 45 hours behind a computer and trying to freelance on the side is exhausting.
Love your content Hanna ✴️
Thank you. :)
I don’t know why yt god has decided I need to hear this but here I am. Many of the things u discuss hold truth. Great artist who made it this far are playing a different game, I think mainly because of AI.
This is a sign for me not to do architecture I got into university of Manchester for architecture but not taking the offer now :)
Thank you for your channel. I am interested to build something but I am intimidated and question my capacity to do so. I get frustrated sometimes because I am dependent for men to do stuffs which I think women can also do. I wish that women can be exposed about these things at an earlier age. I am not that strong physically and so please continue to have more of these videos that will encourage women like me. I am taking notes so I can eventually buy all the needed tools you are recommending. More Power!
A year late. I'm a sis dude... but I want your husband!!! 🙃
Im an interior designing im planning to change to an animator career soon! 🗿
Good luck! Sounds like a great switch!
Love this! How did you get the digital art onto a mural if you don’t paint?
I design murals digitally the paint it onto the wall. I have a vlog with the process :)
i graduated from Architecture 2 years ago, I was an active artist during my student days and i earned a good amount of money and follows with my art . however after graduating I was unsure what to do, so like everyone I got into an architecture job rat race. and it felt like hell for me, low pay, over time almost everday ,no overtime free, low salary( I used to earn 2x more as a student that I earn by doing a proper job). I lost all my art clients and followers. I was severely depressed . last month I suddenly snapped and quit as this isn't letting me any time to continue my art. I quit Architecture to pursue art. Everyone is telling me this is a terrible decision but i am so traumaized by architecture I never wanna go back again. I'm slowly trying to restart my art career but having difficult to do so as 1 year of architecture job kinda killed the artist in me. But I am trying to revive again. i was severly depressed when this video came to me, Your video acted as a therapy for me. Now I am feeling hopeful again that I can restart my art career .Really thank you for this video. Don't know what the future holds but I want to take the leap of faith to becoming a full time artist ( Even though dangers of AI taking over Artist's jobs is looming ever closely )
Hey you're not alone! I worked for 1 yr in the interior design industry now im shifting to an art career. I got traumatized as well in the industry and a lot of ppl think my idea is terrible. Im currently jobless and slowly building my art portfolio and gain again recognition online. Im also Planning to enroll in a state university to get a finearts certificate to persue my dreams to becoming an artist! :3
Looking forward to 6weeks with you both ❤❤❤
Woohooo let's go! 🤸🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️
I have an impact driving but it’s not doing the job when it comes to drilling into concrete and brick. I read or watched something that suggested a hammer driver instead. Is this over kill, should I be more patient with the limitations drivers when drilling to these materials. Just takes a looooong time. Even with the right drill bit.
I have found it can still take quite some effort when going into a really tough material. Also, it depends on the quality of the drill and the bits you have. Maybe also check you have it on the right settings. There is usually an screw and impact setting and you can turn the power up! If it's cordless make sure it's fully charged. If you have an extra handle, you can attach that so you can use 2 hands use that too to help steady yourself. Good luck, you got this! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Unless if you just need to drill a small number of holes you need either a hammer drill or a rotary hammer to drill into concrete. An impact driver is not designed fr that. As a matter of fact, you might even break the impact driver if you try it with concrete.
You got this Hanna!
Thanks for hanging with me. I look forward to seeing what the next year has in store for me! 🥰
Some interesting and helpful points there. Yes. I would be very interested for a follow up in a year.
I´m in my first year of being a junior architect, and I´m so underwhelmed unfortunately. It´s been anti-climatic. (and I wanted to be an architect since grade 6, school was great but work...?). My goal is to be a full time artist on the long term. This video is perfect thank you!
yup, im also a ronin architecture and found a new master in art.
Freshman class is 100. You graduate with 25, 75% failure rate. Out of the 25 that graduate less than half get their license. Of the registered architects, many get the hell out of this profession. I have been in business for 36 years, registered architect for 44 years. My main goal as an architect was to make a profit, and go as fast I could possibly go. I did not dilly dally over the design of the front door. I did not spend 90% of the fee on design. I soon realized most people don’t care what the building looks like, only architects care. The BIGGEST problem with architecture is it too tied to the economy. No money to spend no need for an architect. There are other ways to make a living. One other problem is most see an architect as a draftsman who makes blue prints. You better be in the top 5 of your class or get out ASAP.
You speak a deep and painful truth of the profession. You eather work fast and have at minimum 4 projects going at the same time or get the hell out fast 😂
Thank you for sharing your insight and experience 👍🏽
People do care what the building they live in looks like. It's the companies that do wholesales of the same cheap building projects that don't care. And since most people are not rich or knowledgeable in design they just settle for those cheap badly made designs. Yep, many architects/businessmen main goal is to make a profit and it definitely shows in those disgusting ugly buildings with horrible planing and bad use of space. lol. My honest advice is that if your main goal is getting rich, then don't waste your time with architecture. You'll be spending 6 hard (expensive) years only in university and then who know how many years to actually be able to build your own business which will be a lot of hard work and you might not even enjoy it, (or even have success in it). There are so many other easier and less time consuming ways than this to make money. Basically, do a lot of research and be sure of what you want to do. PS to all architects: If you consider yourself an actual architect, please, as much as possible try to make the project's design at least a little decent/interesting and not just an ugly block of concrete (of course also pay attention to the planning and the use of space).
Jesus Christ man way to lay it down easy
@@scoott8605 its a tough life. If you look at all of the famous architects, even Wright, they all go through tough times. Wright went broke a few times, although he had WW1, the depression and WW2 to cope with. But, many of his clients had money during those years. In 1986 I was a project manager for the largest architectural firm in the country. I went to a meeting with the Managing partner of the firm. After our meeting he said “this business is too difficult”. Since then we added the handicapped code, stricter energy codes, more site and environmental restrictions. It never ends. And the person with the most power is the building inspector who has a high school education, and is certified after a 16 week nigh course. If you like it and you can draw, go for it. I was the best draftsman in our high school for 3 years, 10-12 grades. And i was a very fast draftsman. I haven’t drawn anything by hand in 30 years, except for small sketches. If it wasn’t for cad I would have quit a long time ago. Copy and paste are the best commands.
First 20 seconds and I am so happy I found this video! ❤🤩
Yay! I hope the rest of it lived up to the first 20 seconds! Lol
You suck as an architect that’s why you say that. I bet you’re not creative at all. In order to be a great architect you need to have knowledge and an imagination. But you clearly lack that. And I bet the stuff you design already sucks.
I have so many questions! Do you ever approach deleveopers, and have you found pr or other helps works for bids or direct commissions? loving the content
Yes, I have approached developers directly. You just need to find the right person who is interested in public art, which can be tricky. I would say the jury is out regarding PR as it's usually a few different reasons you people approach you to work with them and often you never find out why.
Love the vendiagram and reminding me that b2b is the space I want to be in, AND love your presentation, what a wonderful idea to get your idea and your art and brand out there! Brilliant
Thank you. So glad you are enjoying the videos :)
love, love, love this video, thank you for sharing your experience as an artist :)
You are very welcome. So glad it was useful :)
It’s inspiring to see someone who is so local to me succeeding in creating an art business. I’m currently trying to start that journey and finding my niche. Your story is uplifting thank you! 🤩
Thank you so much and good luck on your journey! :)
Been feelin like this for 20+yrs
Awesome! Your comments about emotions being a super-power made me cry! Thank you :-)
An appropriate response to this video I think! 🥰
