I just wonder if you apply any kind of pressure un the mold after gluing the plys ? Or do the glue just cure like that in the shell ? Thanks a lot for sharing your amazing job !
Thank you. I've given a more detailed answer on one of the other videos, but quick answer. No, since we measure, cut and insert each ply individually, and very accurately, there is enough pressure within itself to more than do the job. Mass production do things differently and need the extra pressure to squeeze the ply together.
Thanks for the interesting videos! I was wondering - when adding the different plies to a shell, do you offset the seams in the layers?
That's right, the seam is always in a different spot each time.
@ thank you for the reply.
Great sounding Drums! Interesting that you vary the wood according to the drum. A bit like Pearl Reference I guess. In answer to your questions... Varied backing tracks are good. I watched the whole series of AC videos and it is nice to get some different sounds while I watch you work the magic. Having varied tasks as well as whole drum builds start to finish videos is enjoyable and educational. It is the wood shell building that I find the most fascinating. Watching your videos has inspired me to go out and buy some Maple, Bubinga and Jarrah plies to try and make a snare drum shell for each wood. I love craft and working with wood so I will find it most enjoyable. I've always fancied creating a stave snare out of some exotic wool. A Scottish Oak Whiskey Barrel perhaps? I love a challenge and it seems our interests are alligned. Watching you have plies glued together as you demonstrate flat constructed combinations pressed into the mould and cold pressed like that is great. From what I can gather, apart from the ready ply drums, combinations of Horizontal and vertical as one variant and vertical, horozuntal and vertical as the other variant is the way forward for flexibility and to get enough stiffness to construct the shell using the plies and the glues to press the shell seams together is genius! Nice to see real shilled craftsmen at work using his hands still - the shill seems to be dying out to the mass producers which is a shame. As a hobby, I've started prototyping veneer combinations with glues and ply combinations on scraps of maple veneer to see how many plies I can construct flat on the bench and having combinations or 2 and 3 plies above seems logical to me. As long as I only have one horizontal ply in any preglued combination I think it will be flexible enough to mould. So when using two outer two ply sheets and three inner three ply sheets to make a 10-ply shell for example I think it sits as follows (abbreviated) H, V, V, H, V, V, H, V, V, H. I guess with glue and up to a 0.6mm ply that would give about 5.5 - 6mm shell. I'll give it a go soon and let you know how I get on! Any tips or tricks of the trade on shell building in your future videos are greatly appreciated! Thanks a million!
Thanks for all the comments. The readyply Birch is already ply when it comes to us but is still a cross laminated, it's the only way for strength of any ply, it must have both vertical and horizontal. Don't forget with the veneer you have to press it, I may have only shown that once as it's in another room in the workshop. The hardest thing for me when I started out was getting to grips with moisture content and what it does, how to control it and when and when not to use something, that depends to some extent on your local weather conditions plus glue used, how it's pressed, stored etc
@@acdrumsuk Thank you, absolutely! I have tried a few small laminate samples using 0.6mm maple in 2-5 ply configurations using verious glues. So far Titebond III looks favourite but the water in it causes some movoemnt. Been using reinforced ply wood and G-clamps to press the veneers together flat for now. Looking to get a Vacuum Pump and a bag press to start creating flat cross laminated sheets eventually and make a 14 inch mould to start with. That is, when I have learnt the characteristics of the glue, moisture and environmental factors. It is complex alright, however AI helps me a lot! Even the latest Chinese built DeepSeek is awesome to get real answers. Doing lots of research and will probably watch your videos over and over until it sinks in! I will at some point in the near future get some shells from you guys so that I can learn to finish and build a drum once the shell is constructed. I'l start with Maple. Would you recommend 10 or 13 ply shells for hard hitters playing a range of ight to hard rock/metal?
Found it! Thanks very much! Must get one… Handy gadget! 👍
Awesome! How many plies are the drum shells in this video? Nice and meaty!
Very nich finish on this drum. I saw in a previous video you stained it and used epoxy for Mr Cherry. What epoxy do you prefer for drum finishing? Is there an obvious one?
The type of epoxy depends on the method of finishing, we currently use a brush on epoxy, we're currently making a machine for slow rotation of multiple shells at which point we will likely switch to a different epoxy
Nifty! The Makers Mark drums sound great! Are these maple? I think butting up the reinforcement rings squarely is better than diagonally for fit. Is there any need to clamp these or is the tight fit enough to ensure a good bond and no slip while the glue dries? It is great to see you guys work your magic!
Thank you. The Maker's Mark consists of Birch Rack Toms, Beech Floor Toms and Maple Bass Drum. Re the reinforcement rings, 1 clamp on the join is all we use.
It sounds great! 👍
Nice red ruler with adjustable pencil hole for marking out the lug holes. Do you have a link to a supplier or know what it is called so I can search for it please? Love it!
The brand is Saker, you can find on amazon. I don't actually use the hole guide, I may have done on one of these videos but generally just use it to rule a line down.
H! Do you use some form of pressure on the inside of the shell mould when all your veneers are glued and placed into position or is the tight precision cut enough pressure to create a good bond? Many thanks, great insights! The shell in the demo at the end sounds fabulous!
No, or rather vary rarely, we have inflatable bladders to do so but theyre not needed using our / the cold pressed method. Mass production companies use them as they insert all the ply at once ( in most cases), pre cut so they need some wriggle room, the internal pressure on their oven type molds is what pushes all the ply together but it also forces more glue into the wood with the pressure and heat which gives a shell with an unnaturally high pitch compared to the cold pressed method. We fit each ply individually, cutting each one to suit as we go so the pressure of the ply itself is ample to make a round cylinder.
@@acdrumsuk Superb many thanks! A further question on stability and veneer finishing if I may! Would the cold pressed shells use typical Titebond glues? If so, would the finished cold pressed shells be stable enough to support an exotic wood veneer that could be high gloss epoxy coated? If so what glue would you recommend I use for the finishing veneer to withstand heat/moisture resistance without veneer creep or resin cracking? Would you recommend I use a backing veneer also for stability? I have some very nice veneers I have been buying to finish several kits. Many thanks, I'm working through the series and I'm finding it very helpful and insightful!
Great insights, thanks very much!
Nice! Good work guys!
Brilliant to see you working guys! Nice to see how it is done and appreciate the work that goes into it! I'm going to watch the whole series now!
Thank you very much!
Hi.How did you pressure each other?
Additional pressure isn't needed, we cut each ply individually and precise so the plies own pressure is more than enough. Mass production use additional pressure as they (in most cases) put all the ply in at once and require the pressure to do the rest, or use a thicker ply that can't be man handled as easily - various reasons but yeah, we don't need it in most cases.
Hi, friend! tell me how you made the equipment for the cadle?
The cadle?
Having been in similar situations alot of these guys like to mess with people. Not going to name people or the company i work for but some will do this like your story others will meet with you and get you to make a snare or whatever and you send it and never hear a word. Had this happen several times. Now...they can all kiss my arse. They get nothing.
Thanks for watching!
Sorry to hear that they didn't follow up on the verbal agreement, bit of a let down but free tickets ain't bad is it! Great videos, always entertaining and interesting for me. Merry Xmas and happy New year. 👍
I never felt let down or anything, I'm sure Franck had his reasons, just a shame I never got permission to make the kit for myself!
Looking really really good!! Mr Cherry is one lucky so and so! 👍
It's great seeing how the re-rings are applied, handmade and given good care and attention, very unique in today's world. Mr Cherry's drum looks absolutely superb too, I have to say! 👍
Thank you very much!
Quality craftsmanship. 👌
Cool! Looking good from here!! Dave can't half play as well can't he! Slick hands and feet and a beautiful drum kit tuning and overall shell sound too! Top marks all round! 👌
You got that right!
@acdrumsuk yep been playing for 28 years and started late with joining up to serve my country in my teens, drumming was/is something I've always wanted to do, music kills a lot of ills and crosses borders, what's not to like about it. Great stuff
100%
👌
Great work there, some great sounding drums in the later clips.
Glad you like them!
These are nice to watch. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Yerrrrs!! 😁👌
Great work! It's amazing to see the different wood types you work with, snippets of the processes and tools. I'd really like to see some of your natural finish, high gloss drums, your sparkle finishes are the best! 👌
Thanks! There’s a couple of natural gloss coming up very soon and a couple of stain finishes , the next few weeks should show progress of those. thanks for watching
@@acdrumsukOh yes! Stain finishes as well, great stuff! Great skills to have and great that you take the time show us your work, another job in itself, much appreciated.
You've got some great tools and equipment, can you tell me, do you vacuum the plies to glue them together or use a inflatable rubber vessel and compressor in the relevant molds? I'm really looking forward to getting my floor tom in a few weeks! 👍
The veneer is vacuum pressed into ply, but I don't generally use any sort of internal pressure in the molds. As long as the ply is cut accurately, the pressure within itself is ample. Internal pressure systems tend to be in mass production as they: A) add all ply at once so it's not cut as accurately and rely on internal pressure (hence ply gaps you see in mass produced shells) B) the inner pressure system tends to be heated to speed up production. I have experimented with inflatable bladders but find the cause more issues than help
@@acdrumsukthank you 👍
I like the glue gun.
Beautiful drums here, I'm not huge fan of sparkle finishes but you really do get yours to pop when finished.
Thank you! Cheers!
🍒😁
Ah now I get the colour references!! Some great finishes here Carl 👌
