I have zero respect for anyone sighting up in the us army for this overzealous "patrioticm" . They're prioritising military instead of taking care of their families, and then going somewhere they don't belong, to die for some lie made up by some politician somewhere to make the war legitimate.... mostly for "freedom" .

Try watching “Taking Chance” with Kevin Bacon… sad,beautiful, haunting… I did funeral details as part of a ceremonial honor guard during the beginning of my service decades ago. I never knew how much care and prep goes into each member who loses their life. Such deep respect and honor through the whole process.

I believe time is of the essence, they have to notify the next of kin ASAP so they don’t hear of the death on the news or by some other secondary means. It’s a courtesy to them, even though it’s horrific and tragic.

If I remember correctly they had just attempted notification at the residence with no answer and stopped by a local store and just happened to met the KIA’s next of kin there. Per SOPs they had to notify there or risk the NoK finding out before. In Iraq when we took a casualty, everyone in theater we’re on a combo blackout meaning, no Internet no phones until the casualties’ NoK could be notified. They didn’t even want a best friend calling back home and telling.

That is, actually, not a bad thing. I had to deliver the news of a soldier who died in an accident. Not on deployment mind you, but at home. Regular duty. When I looked his mother in the eyes I just couldn't keep it together. The father was angry with me, yelling at me that it's not my loss and I barely knew his son, yet the mother ended up thanking me later on for. "It means a lot to me to know, that (surname) left such an impact on your life, even if you barely knew him.". I was absolutely stunned, because I did expect everything but that. The rest of the movie portrays those different reactions so well that I am convinced someone who had to deliver these messages must have at least been an advisor in the making of this movie.

Maybe the man knew who they are because he has seen it before, maybe his father or another loved one died in a past war and he saw this same kind of uniform man arrive in his house to delivery the news

You don’t wanna do notifications. I’m a cop, I’ve had to tell people their children, sisters, wives, husbands, fathers, grandparents are dead. The living are worse than the dead. I’ll never forget my first body, sure, but I’m NEVER going stop trying to forget the first relative I had to tell.

@@Ajaws I'm a paramedic. I've forgotten plenty of deaths, but I will never forget any time I've had to tell a parent their child died. To even witness that much pain is horrible.
