    So what exactly happened? It sounds like one gloved hand touched a line. But that wouldn't have done anything since the glove and bucket truck act as insulation.

      Near as I can reckon, from his description of his actions, he had the neutral (that they were pulling up) in his left hand, and was signaling above his head with his right hand, and he brushed the live phase conductor... thus a direct short from right to left. My question is: If they were putting back up downed lines, why was the phase conductor even hot? It's not quite clear from the explanation of the work (I believe that was what they were doing), but seems like if the hot-leg had been down also, it shouldn't have even been energized until the neutral was back up and re-connected.

    • @enzy6434
      @enzy6434 2 місяці тому

      He was wearing leather gloves and they don't offer adequate insulation. He was touching the neutral, so when he was signalling his hand to his coworker and accidentally touched the primary line above him (generally called a "live" wire / "hot" wire. Meaning that it is carrying electricity direct from the power source), While simultaneously holding onto the neutral with his other hand, his body then became part of an electrical circuit. This is because the neutral is a path to ground (has ground potential, you would say). So the current from the live wire (primary) wanted to arc through his body to get to the ground via the neutral wire.

    I think that coop’s are all the same great people work there help you do anything. My dad was a lineman for the coop SECO Energy in Florida he work there for 41 years it’s like a big family and I was a lineman for the contractor for that coop. When I see these people it reminds me of how it was.

    I’m not a lineman. I own a sign company and spend most of time in the air. Occasionally have to work around tension lines (safely of course). That being said, just curious…did Gerry contact the tension line, or did it arc? Also, was he holding the neutral with his other hand? I’m trying to visualize how it happened.

    • @honorbean2973
      @honorbean2973 9 місяців тому

      I was trying to figure that out too. From what I understood, he stuck his hand up to wave to another lineman and hit a live line above his head. I think he was waved in a circular motion above his head, so his is hand hit the line briefly.

XFINITY has held a monopoly and provided substandard service to the residents for years. That time has ended and a new age begins. He smiled the whole way through talking about everyone that loves him so much, and I was smiling too. I wonder what city he lives in where everyone is so kind? I wonder if he knew, ahead of the accident, how many people loved and respected him. (His hands are AMAZING)

I was lubricating a scissor lift in south Australia when my platform was raised by another worker. I took the full grunt. 3 years later im sitting in the royal Adelaide hospital after more surgery watching this. I hope you enjoy your happy to be alive day mate. Well done on your rehab your a strong man. Thankyou for this video mate.

    Gerry, Just finished reading your story. I was a lineman for 38 years and in my heart and head I am still a lineman. You are one strong individual and a true example of courage and determination. I personally know another lineman and friend who suffered through a similar though not exact injury. Both of you are great and strong men who are examples of courage. All of us in that line of work have had a day when just for a second something else comes in your mind and you are or could be in trouble. Sometimes, by the help and warning of a co- worker or the grace of god we escape and nothing happens. Those that say it can never happen to them are kidding themselves or just haven’t been in the trade long enough. I do realize that today’s safety rules are a lot more stringent today than they were in 1962 when I started and that is great. Anyway Gerry, my brother and fellow lineman, thanks for being the person you are and thanks to your family and friends for hanging in there with you. Stay strong brother.

For all Linemen, thoughts and prayers for safety and guidance. mmmm is like chalk board and teeth. I have had my teeth pulled and still get phantom pain, I cannot imagine, with both hands. Total Prayers. with ms absolutely bees, that is nerves. Burning, stinging. look to see a bee, or what is biting, and no bees no nothing there. Nerve damage of many kinds, is perplexing we are used to seeing something, a reason for the feelings, etc. That is very hard, and how frustrating for them, I am glad they have their home set up, and the help that is so awesome, treasured Blessings. Praise God he made it and that they have that faith, their church family, work family, etc. God Bless and be with them.

    I heard Jerry say it? He was complacent in his job. He was thinking of his next ten days off. Four wheeling with his wife. Working aloft & thinking of something else & not on the job. Question? They mentioned a man had to climb a pole in a right of way? I guess their work practice is to not get a clearance & ground the line? No mention of cover? Very sad for everyone involved. If it wasn’t his strong will & personality? He might not have survived? I guess I’ve been very fortunate not to have had a serious burn like Jerry’s in my over thirty years of doing line work? I used to wear leathers in the secondary zone. That’s where Jerry had his accident. The last eighteen years I’ve been wearing rubber gloves & sleeves. My biggest mis steps haven’t been my gloves. I jump in the bucket & realize I don’t have my harness on. Then I have to jump out & get my ppe on. I hope the co-op kept Jerry after his accident. He deserves a second chance!
