Hi. All those three books are amazing. I understand the frown upon reading Amish. 😄 I felt the same way and it took me 50 to 60 pages of reading before my mind began ignoring the flippant use of language. But after that all books became eminently readable.

Quite chilling about the madness bit. In the movie 'The Changeling' a character in the asylum says that in this place you have to work to look as normal as possible. Any form of protest or emotional outburst from the women in the institution is read as being mentally deviant. It is so terrifying to think that till date mental institutions are being used to control a woman. The moment someone is deemed mad they are utterly discredited and anything they say, any complaints they raise falls on deaf ears. Foucault's "Madness and Civilization" summarises it best - notions like madness are socially and culturally constructed in any given age and place. The criteria for madness are made up, by us, they in part are invented for particular social and political purposes.

I've been in a reading slump since I finished college in 1989..... I think the one about the Bengali Mashi who doesn't stop would be a good fit!

A lot of children can handle dark things and sometimes prefer them over rainbows and unicorn and all-the-time happiness type of stories. Children need sad stories too because bad things happen to children all the time and they need something tangible (like a physical book written by someone they don’t know) to relate to.
