Head Halter Introduction- Luring & Shaping Intro
This is an introduction video to getting a dog comfortable with a head halter. I am demoing two approaches: luring and shaping. The main focus will be on shaping where I am waiting for the dog to approach the halter in some way and I will mark and reward him for doing so. Ultimately the end goal is to teach Baci to place his snout in the halter on his own so that we can clip it. (That will take a little time and patience!)
Sorry for some of the sloppy training and timing here. It was a little difficult to multi task in this one!

I love the “Free!” command🐾❣️🐾
Wow!! Looking good 🐾❣️🐾
She’s a beauty 🐾❣️🐾 Her enthusiasm for everything is amazing 😁 You are one lucky guy to have her in your life. She’s living her best life with you. Bless you both 🥰
Aww thank you so much! She is super enthusiastic for sure lol. I truly love her so much.
I ❤ Quest!
thank you! lol she is pretty cool! and cute!
Thank you for responding. This little girl of mine just picks up everything.
lol, yea managing the environment is key for sure. There is another video of mine on this channel that I uploaded within the past 3 months where I go over steps 1-3 for teaching drop it. I think it is in the "shorts" section or "puppy" section on this channel. You may find that helpful!
So do I have to carry treats around with me forever
Nope this is just an easy way to introduce this concept. Eventually you would move to asking for a drop and if puppy does it then reward puppy for doing a good job. Eventually over time and practice the dog should understand to drop. I wouldn't worry much about treats with a new dog if you're teaching basic concepts to start. Over time with consistency and practice you would fade out food.
Throwing food away teaches the dog to pick up food from the ground. I used the method and am now trying to train the dog to not pick up random bits of food even if I drop them. I wouldn't suggest using the toss food away method if you are going to be training the dog to assist with blind customers.
Agreed 100%. I wouldn't use this for a service dog. I mainly use this for dogs who are pressure sensitive or nervous. Or for some dogs who find movement and chase rewarding. But you are not wrong, this can, just like with any training, come with its own set of issues.
Love this!!!!!
Thank you!

Hi Anthony. Thank you for this video. My dog was diagnosed with tethered cord earlier this year. As he is my first dog, i didn't know his pain behaviors were not normal. It's very helpful to see your experience and the videos. He was initially noted to have anxious/reactive behavior when he turned 1 by a group dog trainer. The journey began from here into anxiety medications and related training. As the training was not progressing, then the medical assessments started. Have you considered the surgery or had it completed? My dog is now 3 and I'm exploring the surgery to primarily help ease the pain and anxiety/fear related behaviors.
Thanks for your message and for sharing. Journey had surgery 3 months ago. He is now 5. Part of me wishes I did it sooner, but I waited only because the surgeon had only done about 5 of these surgeries at the time of his diagnosis. We are only 3 months in, but at the moment he has recovered well and seems to feel a bit better then before surgery.
@@DeMarinisDogTraining thank you for the response! I too feel surgery is the right step to help address the pain, however have the same hesitation given how new medical research is in this and the limited resources in my locale. I'm glad to know the surgery has helped Journey. I'm curious if Journey had any anxiety/reactivity related to the pain and if you've noticed changes so far? In the video, you shared that the sound of accidentally dropping something impact it had on Journey - my dog is similar and gets very scared and sensitive to noises. I'm cognizant that you are a trainer and respect the limitations you may have in replying. I've had to pause Mutsy's training plan with his current trainer while i explore this diagnosis and hope to make the best informed decision for his health and quality of life.
Our dog was just diagnosed with tethered cord as well and we have observed many of the same things as in your videos. I always disregarded them as allergies or anxiety but now see them very differently. Are you managing with meds only?
Hi! I was using medication for the first couple years but as Journey has gotten to be 5 years old he seemed to be slowing down so I finally decided it was time for surgery. He is 3 months post op at the moment and has been doing well so far. Meds definitely helped the past few years but it got to a point where it wasn't enough anymore.
@@DeMarinisDogTraining interesting. I'd love to continue following your experience with Journey - did you document his surgery and recovery process somewhere? Did he ever develop lameness? And who performed your surgery? Sorry, lots of questions, we're just beginning our journey :)
My family’s command phrase for this is “Go Home”. It’s a fantastic thing to teach a dog.
yes it is so useful! Makes life easier.
Such a good example
thank you!
Very nice patio view 👍
LOL I wish it was mine. It was a cabin I had during vacation.
We say HOUSE but same effect.. took some training and lots of treats to train my stubborn Boston Terriers
such a helpful skill!
I just tell my pit go and she goes to her house
some dogs don't need any training. The training is just what is occurring in that moment and then with continued reps and consistency it just naturally occurs. I love dogs like that!
The way my dog always does it is takes the toy and runs away 😂Do you have any advice on what i should do to play with him? I really like your videos because i find them informative Many thanks 🎉
Sorry I missed your message! without knowing you and your dog it is hard to say, but I might have a leash on your dog to help guide him back to you and stop him from running off. Or I might trying running away to get him to come after you. There is a video on my channel with a black lab where I go over how to get him to bring the toy back to me. It is a full session. It may be helpful to you! Wishing you the best of luck with your boy.
Cool😃😃
My dog will learn something and the next day act clueless what do I do
Hi Lisa! It's hard to say without knowing your dog, but generally you need to pratice and be consitent at the step your dog is doing well at before proceeding forward. Practicing in quiet or low level distraction areas is the first thing I do before taking those skills out on the road.
Labrador Retriever DNA sport/gun dog breed
This is invaluable, especially the video footage. Thank you for sharing.
One of my dogs has an autoimmune condition that attacks her spine (among other parts). Some of her symptoms look similar, including the non-specific pain, licking before episodes, sudden tensing of the body, sniffing a leg, jerking a leg out repeatedly and hurriedly laying down. Luckily not as severe as Journey's sensations, and very responsive to meds plus good traction.
@@carefreecaninetraining Thank you so much and also thank you for sharing your story. That is so interesting! I had no idea autoimmune issues could also cause similar episodes.
Would you do these steps if the dog is a frustrated greeter type of a reactivity is it all the same? Reactivity is reactivity
Love this!! So good, play skills and strengthening your recall relationship! Win Win!
yes totally agree! Play can be helpful for so much!
I'm not sure if this looks fun or tedious, but either way it looks effective!
Cropped ears are so dumb and ugly
Before I saw the dog, I thought it was going to be a shiatsu.
Initially, I was confused as to what purpose this served then I realized I must be very lucky, I've always had dogs in my life and understood how to play with them very naturally. It's cool there's stuff like this out there for people who may not have been so fortunate, and wanna go about the joy of dog ownership responsibly.
@253lou, thank you for your comment! You are correct some people have dogs that want to play but the owner doesn't know how to engage or play with them. Thanks so much for the comment and for being open minded to the video! I appreciate it.
@@DeMarinisDogTraining keep up the good work!! Thank you for showing our 4 legged friends the love they deserve

Don’t make sense
That's how I train my girlfriend, i throw her the meat then I tell her to come.🤣🤣
So cute 🥰
Thank you for making this video I didn’t know dogs could get tethered cord, I have it now I wonder if my dog also suffers from it she has these symptoms I thought at one point she was having seizures but she’s not. I know my sweet dog and I suffer from another syndrome which is Ehlers Danlos syndrome (people) in dogs it’s called Cutaneous asthenia, I know EDS causes tethered cord in humans so I wonder if it can cause it in dogs.
This is very interesting thank you! I didn't know this. Tufts University Vet school just put out a article on Tethered Cord which you might find interesting. It just came out a day or two ago.
😍😍❤️
Poor little dude sad to see his discomfort will share with other vets
Yes please share with other vets!!!
Well done, also love the beautiful pics
I feel so sorry for Journey. It must be so hard for you to watch when he has these episodes. What sort of treatment is Journey on? What is the prognosis?
Hi Cindy! I am actually going to be posting a blog post that I wrote with more detail about all this. The Prognosis is trying medication to start, but that surgery might be needed.
Thank you SO much. I have dog training I g experience but I’ve NEVER dealt with a dog like this, now OWN dog. He’s always done attention seeking behaviors since he was 12 weeks old. We have been doing the EXACT same things with that the lady you described was doing. It’s so hard to know what to do. With our dog, an almost 11 month old Australian Cattle dog (that indeed has a job learning herding cattle and is exercised constantly mentally and physically) he’s seemed to learn the brunt of it from our in-law’s Australian Shepherd (no contact now) that has major aggression and attention seeking behaviors. Now we are trying to do damage control and make him a dog that is confident in his own without obsessing with especially me. Our little dude does what you described with this client and more. I do have the Dogtra Tom Davis No Bad Dogs edition E Collar and it’s amazing for off leash work and we really only ever use vibrate to reenforce recall or to break attention from something overstimulating. Would you recommend that we also include the E Collar in every day life at home and with curbing attention seeking? That way none of the attention comes from us, reinforcing the behavior? He’s not aggressive, possessive, or disobedient by any means. He does amazing things and knows so many commands, but especially at his age right now, it’s becoming very tough. So far we have worked on just keeping him placed and watching us do everyday things without him interacting with us. We also have made sure that anything that is our domain (couches, chairs, beds) have become our space and he’s only allowed when invited. He was throwing himself all over furniture and crawling on people, excessively licking etc. All other parts of his life have structure except for the attention seeking. Do you have any tips? Anything is appreciated!
