Why Ridley Scott's Napoleon Failed
Hollywood Strikes Again... as they demolish the almost mythical figure of Napoleon. Apart from multiple historical inaccuracies, the story itself is not even interesting, and the time jumps ruin everything.
Watch my 37 minute video explaining the actual history of this mythical figure.

The success of convoy raiding pre-1900 really doesn't come down to parity of fleet sizes so much as it does the speed of communications at the time. It could take weeks for a merchant ship to even be noted as late at the port she was due to arrive at, and months for messages to reach her home port. That made the practice of commerce raiding far safer as you could loiter in an area for several weeks and then simply move on. The Graf Spee actually had a pretty successful war in the Southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans for several months before she stumbled across Harwood's group. She probably could have won out in the engagement as well given the damage she had dealt out, but Langsdorf appears to have been shaken by the degree of aggression displayed against him, and allowed himself to be convinced that this was a small detachment of a larger force. Based on the assumption that there could have been a Battlecruiser lurking around somewhere, Langsdorf's decision to run for Montevideo was absolutely the correct decision if he was prioritising the survival of his crew. Also, to contradict the video narration, Cumberland was far from "almost obsolete". The County class was a class of 10,000 ton heavy cruisers upon which the York class was based. The York class was lightened primarily by losing 2 guns and their turret, but otherwise shared more or less the same design and equipment as the County class. Cumberland was actually the superior unit of Harwood's force, and I believe his usual flagship, but was conducting maintenance in the Falklands. I recall a naval historian expressing the opinion, possibly shared by more official commentators, that it was good that it was the Exeter present on the day because her loss/damage was less significant than equivalent loss/damage of the Cumberland would have been. Of course, had Cumberland been present as well as Exeter it is far more likely Harwood would have won outright, as a total of 14 8" guns versus 6 11" guns lends superior weight of fire to the British force.

You missed one of the most impactful parts of the movie - the very end. The German officer in charge told the Danes that this whole fight was completely unnecessary because our government had already surrendered about an hour earlier.

Think about how different things could have potentially been if Napoleon, knowing he was terminally ill, had lead the charge of the Old Guard at Waterloo essentially to martyr himself in battle "for France." If it's possible for him to be any more legendary, that'd have done it in my book.

Waterloo is another movie by the same creator and trust me war and peace has a much larger setting more variety and the uniforms are in more mass numbers then just 3 nations also most of the French soldiers just wear the same uniform minus the old guard and some are just reused like the 5th regiment of line you can see a few sprinkled everywhere as well as the Grenadiers

you missed the politics of why the Metropolitan army off france wore red- the colonial forces like the foreign legion had nice khaki colored clothes. France ket flipping between socialist and conserviative governments. the socialist hinted maybe they wouldn't have nay army at all, relying on citizen soldiers. in the face of this the conservatives refused to allow ANY relaxing of the uniform of the metropolitan army, in effect while every other army marching onto the field in WW1 has field uniforms, the british most noted to be very hard to see, the french governmnet refused to allow any relaxation of the uniform and so in effect marched to war in dress uniforms as if it were still 1814. The british had done this in the crimea in the 1850's "We're fighting a european power not natives" and learned how stupid it was.

It's ironic but the guns in the Oscarsborg Fort were made by Krupp in Essen Germany. So the Blucher got to find out just how effective German guns could be. The torpedoes were the old Whitehead type but they still did the job with the second one doing more damage than the first which hit near the bow. The second one hit amidships right in the engine room. The Altmark was the supply ship for the sunken pocket battleship Graf Spee and the men on board were all the captured merchant marine sailors from ships the Graf Spee had sunk. The Oscarsborg Fort bombing did little damage as it had deep bunkers where the soldiers stayed out of harms way.

Much better than the big budget and totally Hollywood ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Ryan was a well made war movie, but at base still a overly chatty soap opera, with modern emo, and angst coming out the wazoo. This movie spared us of that, and I for one am great full.

I think, you do not know Danish military tactics, as well as NCOs obey the officers. The Danish Army at the time was not 1940 current standards, they are fighting an Army that knew manouvre warfare- hence took Poland and by June took France also taught you Amis, and the Tommies how it should be done. They were reservists with a training was not existent. Secondly, you are looking through the lense of current warfare practices... Arm chair arse clown!

The Vietnam War did not go well for the Americans. Despite weapons more than 100 times greater than the Viet Cong forces and around 58,000 American soldiers dead, our American friends returned home with their “tail between their legs”, as we say back home. Another historical fact! Does this make Americans cowards?

Fun fact - Germany did in fact have two large undiscovered oil fields right on its doorstep Matzen in Austria and Schoonebeek in the Netherlands - together these fields held over 1.5 Billion barrels of oil + Hungary too had a fair bit of oil as yet undiscovered Algyő (84 million tonnes) and Nagylengyel (45 million tonnes). In my opinion this is the ultimate what if, and really the only way germany could have won or at least got some kind of negotiated peace. I should also add that this more or less solves germany's rubber crisis (yes rubber too was in great demand and after oil the second most sought after resource) - giant resources needed for synthetic oil would be freed up and used for the production of synthetic rubber, thus solving that problem as well.

9:14 The biggest gain the Italians made from World War 1, was that their chief rival (Austria-Hungary) was destroyed. 10:48 Russia suffered significantly, but from a large population base. France suffered significantly, from a smaller population base. It's one of the reasons that so many French soldiers were old in World War 2. They had to go up against a country with twice their population.

Wellington was a commander years a head of his time. He was obsessed with training and logistics, a consummate diplomat when it came to holding an allied force together (peninsula war). He never lost a battle in India or Spain. Napoleon had never fought the British and totally under estimated Wellington. He should have taken on the British first, if he’d defeated the Duke the Prussians would have withdrawn. A fatal mistake.

Some say he had duodeanol cancer or even lead poisioning.
