Hidden SPD-SX features
The SPD-SX is the most famous sampling pad in the world and has changed the way drummers and other musicians perform live today.
In this video, I would like to introduce you to three functions that I find very useful, but which many users are not familiar with.
- Route the monitor signal through your SPD-SX
- Create backups and change the configuration without an SPD-SX
- Control other instruments via MIDI without using Ableton Live or another DAW

Greetings! It seems these replies may still be fairly active; at about the 2:15-2:20 minute mark when you mention how you control the "volume in the back" in regard to the IEMs for the band IN to the SPD, can you elaborate? Is that controlled in the interface in on the screen in the menu? Also would I be able to differentiate volumes between the band coming in as well as my samples going out? Cheers, and thanks for this, especially the second hint, lord that's helpful!
Hi. Happy to hear the video is useful to you :). As we are using the "Audio In" in the back for the monitor sound we can use the gain just to the left of the input to change the volume of the monitor input (2.20). From the front we can control the phones volume which will be a mix of the monitor input, the click, and your samples. With the master we can control the volume of the samples going out via the master and sub outputs. You also have to consider that the signal for your audio in can be very low or too hot so you have to check with the sound engineer too. I like to keep the gain not fully open so I can increase the volume in case we are louder during the concert then during the sound check or something changes on the monitor mix.
@@spd-sx-editor this was perfect, thank you so much!
I also like Spd SX editor very much. Can any one tell me, what the button "Default" in version 2.1.16 does?
The button you mentioned is a dropdown showing the tag assigned to the last selected wave in the wave list. Tags can help you to categorise and filter waves.
HI WHERE DO I GET THE SOFTWARE?
You can download the SPD-SX-Editor here: spd-sx-editor.com/#download
Love the program, would like to see the license compatible with iLok so I don't have to purchase multiple licenses when I need to do changes out on the road
Thanks so much for your excellent Editor!
Okay, I love using your editor. Have you considered expanding the software for other settings such as Kits Effects, Master Effects and other non-kit settings? I'm using your methodology of copying the Roland folder to my desktop to build and craft kits but when I copy that folder over to the Roland, any of the other changes on the unit itself (e.g. routing of effects through FX1) get lost.
Hi, would it be possible to control lights with the SPD-SX?
Hi. Using the MIDI interface it would be possible to control light. However, this requires additional gear and software. The most common way would be to send MIDI data to a computer where you run a light show software. In the software, you would i.e. prepare different scenes and map them to the MIDI inputs. The software would then send the command from the light scene via a USB/DMX interface to your light installation.
@@spd-sx-editor I did not set your response! Gonna try that at the club my band performs ASAP Thanks mate
Hey there, that s nice. I m looking for more advanced features such as setting multiple samples on the same pad that would play depending on the velocity. Is this feasible you think? Would be happy to contribute to the efforts in case...
Hi. Unfortunately, the subwave does not support velocity. However, there are two options to achieve this. 1. you can use pad link in order to play the sounds of two pads at the same time or 2. you can merge the two audio files together using a DAW such as Logic, Ableton etc. and export one audio file out of the two. Using left and right pan you could even bring them out of different outputs.
The work this Man has forged for the Editor program is Amazing!! Brilliant! I've purchased 2 licenses already and most likely will get a 3rd for my new M1 Big Sur Mac. Thank you for all you do!
Quick question?...how does FOH(front of house) hear what you are routing from the SPD-SX. I couldn't tell from video footage. It appeared as if you had NO outputs from SPD-SX. Did sound output from the MOOG?
@@immagood2 Hi Tom. Thanks for your support :). Yes exactly, the SPD-SX sends only MIDI notes to the Moog. So FOH needs only the mono output of the Moog.
Software looks nice! But is not wokring on Mac OS 10.15.7 ?
The software is compatible up to and with macOS Big Sur (11.1). Please contact support@spd-sx-editor.com if you need further help.
Great video
Love the fact I can work in the editor without having the SPD connected! Just alter the backup when I want and load this into SPD when done, thanks for this! 😊👍🏻
Never new you could do that. Using the Spdsx as a line in monitor for inears monitoring. That is So awesome.
Awesome thank you. Love your work.
Anyone else not having the SPD-SX show up as a virtual device no matter how many times you re-install drivers? My god. I'm gonna lose it.
Please make sure you have the latest version of the editor installed. Connect your SPD-SX via USB. After connecting, you will see a drive like a USB-stick called „SPD-SX“ on your computer. In the video it's called "Virtual-SPD-SX". Click the „Open”-button in the SPD-SX-Editor an select the mentioned drive. Note: The USB mode of your SPD-SX must be set on „WAVE MGR“.
I got the trial version but it won't let me drag and drop files or save any changes. Also, changes do not translate to the Spd sx. Have emailed and got reply....apparently these functions don't work in the trial version....I will buy the product and update this comment.
so any updates?)
@@ramms94 I have purchased the programme but when i put the activation code in and try to activate it, it sends me back to the purchase page....I'v been in contact with Basil (the developer) and he has made a few suggestions but as yet my purchased copy will not work....contact is still ongoing.....i'm using a Macbook Pro (dont know if thats the problem) I'll keep you informed.
I need to contact you. Basil. Can you please reply.
Hi I'm having issues with my pads. I really re edited my kit lists and now there's no sound coming out of the masters. I just updated the firmware to 1.8. Can you please help me. I'm at a gig and can't get the pads to get sound.
I think it is an abuse to have to buy a separate software, it should be included in the purchase of your spd sx
I think it is an abuse to have to buy a separate software, it should be included in the purchase of your sps sx
This is a 3rd party software. The spd sx has it's own software but it's pretty limited so this guys made their own
@@CzarCustom is not it true, then why is it on the official Roland website?
@@williammelowm The Roland software is the SPD-SX Wave Manager. This is developed by a single person, and he is not related to Roland.
I really recommend this software! It's smart, easy to lern and very helpful! The support is very kind! Well done Switzerland!

How is this different from the SPD-SX Wave Manager Software?
This lets you change SPD-SX settings using your computer which Wave Manager doesn't.
@@onesong2001 do you use this? Do you think its worth the fee?
@@darryldrums I've only had my SPD-SX about a week but I'm going to buy this because Rolands Wave Manager only allows you to load samples into the SX.
Just bought it. Definitly a step up from the old Wave manager !!!
is it possible to assign different waves to the same pad according to the dynamics (velocity)? ex. soft hit will play an HH closed, and hard hit will play HH open
Is there a way to arrange all wav files in alphabetical order on the SPD-SX? I know they can be arranged on the editor here, but it doesn't translate over to the SPD-SX when I save it on the editor...
Amazing app. One thing I do miss/can't find is an easy way to see (and possibly change) midi notes per sound/wave. AM I missing a function in the app or is it possible to have it in a near update?
Another tip/request is an option to copy a pad and option to paste it to another kit. This now works partially (only things like tempo sync, but not volume and such)
What's the difference between a subwave and a wave?
You can assign 2 samples to each pad. A wave and a subwave.
