Miley wrote this song for her grandfather, but I think it can easily apply to anyone who's lost someone, whether that be a family member, a friend, or a pet. That one line, "even though it's different now, you're still here somehow" is so hauntingly beautiful and true. Even though our loved ones might be gone, they are never truly gone because they live on in our memories. In our day-to-day lives, and on special occasions, when we reminice or remember something they said or did. When we see or smell or taste something that they liked. When something funny happens or we're having a bad day, and we think of what they might say if they were still here. I'd like to believe, also, that there is an afterlife and that our loved ones are watching over us and know when we are thinking of them. Rumi once said, "Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form" and I believe that's true. At least, I want to believe it's true. No person nor animal can ever replace the ones we've lost, but life goes on and we meet new people and pets, and they help to somewhat fill the void that the dearly departed left behind. Years ago I listened to this song in middle school or high school, and it always made me cry with how sad it was. I could relate in that I've lost pets. Now, years later, I can still relate, perhaps even more so as I've lost both people and pets. In particular, a family friend of ours who was like a grandmother to me. Each Christmas I still think about how my mother and I would help her decorate her house, put up the Christmas tree, put out all the little animatronic Santas, and more. I remember the lunches we used to have, the mini frozen pot pies she'd heat up for us. I remember all of it and while it makes me sad, when I think upon those memories it feels like she's still here. I wonder if she knows I am thinking of her? If she knows how much she meant to me and my mother? I hope so. I sincerely hope so, and hope that one day we will meet again.
