Using a knife safely at Forest School can open up creative opportunities, develop children’s skills, and support risky play. This is the full version of knife teaching from my Forest School training that I’m happy to share with you as a complete guide to using knives with children at Forest School. We even make a couple of tent pegs whilst we go through the techniques!
In this video we are using my 12 point system for using tools at Forest School using an acronym ‘A.C.A.D.E.M.I.C.S S.U.C.’. Check out this video first that explains it more generally - ua-cam.com/video/eOObnATJRkQ/v-deo.htmlsi=rvUs39zanNzUmNBN

    Hi Lou! I really appreciate your coverage of topics that could sometimes be considered "controversial" as a lot of people seem to shrug them off instead of discuss them. Thank you for another great video :) I was wondering your opinion on rewards at school?

    Hi luo. Your videos are awesome!!! I'm waching alll of them! About the bucket game, I didn't quite understand ‏the role of the grownup: ‏does he ‏stand by the bucket ‏the whole time ‏? ‏and if so, ‏how does he throw ‏the balls slow enough ‏so he won't win too easily?

    • @ForestSchoolLou
      @ForestSchoolLou 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. It depends on number of players - you will need more balls if you only have a few players so that it takes longer to throw them all out. If you are playing with a large group almost always the group gets the balls back in the bucket before you can throw them all out. You can also make it easier or harder by where you aim your throws!

    So if a child were to offer me a bit of mud tea, is it praise to say "yummy" or is that just playing along?

    • @ForestSchoolLou
      @ForestSchoolLou 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. I personally would say that their has to be some sort of positive judgement behind the statement for it to be praise 'well done, you're so clever to make the mud tea its so yummy' which I think is different to actively engaging in the role play 'what yummy tea, I wonder what the ingredients are?' I guess there could be a fine line between it.

    Thanks both. I'm wondering if what John is talking about is not fundamentally linked to what Piaget stated 150 years ago or so - childrens' brains are different to ours, not inferio , not underdeveloped; and ultimately it can be stretched to accepting that each brain is individual and it pays to try to listen and understand and treat the other as a partner, someone much needed in the 'team' (even if it's just a two souls gig), regardless of age or where they are at in their life journey....it's incredibly hard at times but I am very grateful to folks like you who keep reminding us and offer powerful tools for when things get tough in our lives. Thank you both again for your public conversation!

    • @ForestSchoolLou
      @ForestSchoolLou 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! Yes I think you are right - children's brains are different, but not lesser than an adult. I think that this is such an important point in our modern society that seems to be very adult dominated, where often children are expected to 'do what they are told' all the time without being offered choices or any agency over their own lives.
