It is hard enough to learn an instrument, crafts songs, record and mix them but when you add in marketing, social media, streaming platforms, and so on and so on, it seem improbable or impossible to make a living doing music.

29:26 Telefon Tel Aviv is great. I ran in similar circles, though I never got to know them. I actually got my Oink invite from talking with someone about them. TTA came up in a conversation, so I mentioned I lived in New Orleans too and the Oink member told me to go check outside my window to see if Telefon Tel Aviv was there. Sadly, they weren't. I didn't even get to see them perform live until after Charles died unfortunately.

Regarding responses to demand letters... I'm in a position in life and finances where I literally have nothing to lose. So if I got an obvious shakedown demand letter, I'd respond with "Okay. So basically you're demanding money with menaces. That's a criminal act which I'm sure your bar association and state and federal police would take an interest in, especially if you continue to escalate further. I'm sure your legal license makes you a lot more money than you're demanding from me, so perhaps consider your personal hazard in making such demands of me, who has literally nothing to lose. If you are operating under instruction from a client, that makes you simply an accessory for hire, which will still get you disbarred, but you might not go to prison for as long. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes." If the company concerned is publicly owned, I'll offer to go to their shareholders and remind them that the veil of incorporation has limits in the case of criminal acts, especially where receipt of proceeds of crime are concerned. If they're privately owned, I'll offer to go after their owners. "But this is a civil matter!" The minute you made a financial demand without a clear legal basis, you made it an act of criminal extortion. You want the opportunity to open this up for discovery of incomes derived from similar demands? Be my guest. And if a conviction is recorded, compensation and punitive damages are in the table. Integrity is such an underrated stance nowadays. Being "retired" I realise that choosing to remain a semi pro musician and support myself as an audio engineer was one of the best decisions of my life. That meant I could take the gigs that were interesting in some way or another. Either because they were really good music, or because I learned something valuable from them. Never to just pay for food or rent. Highly recommended, Happy that others feel the same way. "Don't give up the fight" ✌✌

I missed the live stream, but the replay was blissful to listen to. I've been making music for more than 25 years, releasing everything under Creative Commons, and I have a job unrelated to music. So I completely understand what Ben says at approx 30:00

TikTok has shown me algorithms designed for the end user is why it's so popular. In western apps end user satisfaction is a distant secondary to advertising data and advertising money. I've never had the hundreds of thousand views on other apps like I have on TikTok.

It surely wasn't 1985 (Imogen was only 8 years old), and it couldn't have been 1995, because she hadn't released her first album yet (1998). It's possible that you are thinking about 2005, because she would have been on tour for her 2nd album 'Speak For Yourself'? 🤔

Fell in love with Synthmaster3 during beta and it replaced pretty much all other synths for me - love the sound and the usability. Does everything I need in a nice package and has a great workflow with the dev improving it constantly. Can really recommend spending some time with it. Great presets too.

Oh nice, 2 has been one of my faves for a long time and i've been impressed with 3, love to see Benn explore it. Can be a bit quirky around the edges but damn is it a lot of fun for tinkering. One thing to note is that SM3 is one of my favorite MPE synths, modulating granular voices per note is pretty rad.
