Worst commentary I have ever heard. The two announcers had no idea how the AUST v USA Test Team format worked.
The Coke can was a quick thing in those days,, John did well in the EH. The footage is bit hard on my eyes, trying to work out who is who. Ivars FJ very distinctive
Some of those cars are still running as classics now in 2024. I went there once as a little boy late 50s
Ross took the opposition out by watering the track
As usual with these ... I was there. We stood near the fence in front of the commentary and officials box
Just think about it, it was a speedway in suburbia! I remember going Friday nights as a kid and it was as loud as phark, a friends uncle was Clarry the clown.
Garry Crash wins a B grade race!
🏁🏁awesome 👌 memories
Awesome 😎😎😎
Thanks for posting
Awesome to see this footage many years ago lol, I'm almost 54 & I went to Rowley park with my uncle when I was 5. Wow George Tatnell back then 👍🏆
Holy Hell l!
Talk about commentator's curse! That went horribly wrong in the blink of an eye. Wonder what they did with the old bleachers from Rowley Park? They were there when I made my only visit (from the UK) in 1981...
Different world back then haha 1:11:04
Hi, Was Peter Maltby at this reunion?
Clay tracks and speedway bikes don’t mix well usually
All closed …. Drove past recently and it was so sad to see
Geez, anyone know what became of the rider of that bike and his passenger that night? Seems to me that the whole bike just jackknifed. Nasty looking incident at the old Speedway City in Adelaide. BTW, what if anything ever became of the track? I've heard it's still there, though not in use. Is that right?
Never went but would loved to have done so. Also, I have yet to see what it looked like in daytime. All the clips are always of Rowley at night.
SAD NIGHT WHEN ROWLEY PARK SPEEDWAY CLOSED.----SEEMS TO BE A SIGN OF THE TIMES ---SYDNEY ROYALE NO LONGER WITH US.--- INCLUDING BRISBANE ECCA. AND WESTMEAD (SYDNEY) AND NOW ARCHERFIELD (BRISBANE) JUST TO NAME A FEW. I WAS LUCKY IN MY YOUTH TO ATTEND THOSE VENUES. THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF TODAY HAVE MISSED OUT ON THE GOOD TIMES. PETER WADE. SPEEDWAY FANATIC. THANK YOU FOR THOSE WONDERFUL MEMORIES.

Hey buddy, do you know the date of this race? I'm a bit confused by it (I'm getting old lol) I crashed my car there on Feb 14 1997 (see Video Craig Power 1996 - I had the date wrong when it was posted) so this has to be earlier than that or late in the year for the '97 '98 season I think. The footage mentions me but I can't see my car there. My other 2 cars are there driven by Mark Patton & John Mills so I can't even think why my brother wasn't driving his car. In this era I was driving the car in my Video and it won pretty much every race it finished and that isn't evident in your footage...messing with my head lol.
Hi Craig, nice to hear from you and I remember you racing at Speedway City (I was a photographer there) I have this meeting down as the final one for the 1996/97 season on Friday April 4, 1997. Wendy Turner (Promoter/Owner/Operator 1996-2016 for those who don't know) donated these Speedway City videos so we can all remember the good times and great racing. I will post the full meeting later and continue into the 1997/98 season where I'm sure you will feature.
Thanks heaps for that, I reckon then that I'm driving the half Black half White 5 car, which was a spare...that makes sense now, the crashed car was flown to NZ for repair and my spare wasn't anywhere near as good a car to drive. Once repaired that car only ran in Victoria until I destroyed it again in Hamilton...I threw the spare together again for my final race before retiring, so I probably wouldn't feature after this one.@@speedwayhistory
Very sad that there's such a scant crowd on hand to ser this fine racing.
Wasn't it "Brian" Nash? I really remember Nash, racing all around the Country at the time. And he had almost no competitors to speak of at the time. I don't seem to remember the name of his passenger, though. I don't know why, but then again, I don't seem to remember the Man's first name, much less that of his poor passenger!!
Id love to see that track back up and running
RIP Billy. That car of Rockys has been restored to original Steve Stewart spec very recently.
I was there, got home at sunup so a long night. Watching the first minute and saw a racecar I knew the owner of and the Adelaide Engine Service pushcar
Some of my earliest living memories are of being at Rowley Park with my parents and older siblings in the late 70s. We used to sit just coming onto the back straight near turn 2 on the Torrens Road side.
Did Cary race again after this ?
For many years.
At least these older Super Sedans looked completely different from one another and you could tell who was who at a glance. Now we have these things called "Late Models" that ALL look so much alike, there's barely any difference in them at all.
They looked bloody cool
Tattnell summed them up as garden sheds, stupid oversize cars that do not fit on most Australian tracks.
I love these things, although looking at what the blokes here are driving, and thinking of how much money they'd be worth, if they were in just half pie good nick, you'd be looking at a bloody fortune going around that track right now!!
was probably there for this one. SA had some great speedway shows around that time. RIP Speedway City, gone but never forgotten!
Another meeting at Speedway Park where I can safely say ... I was there, even at the re-runs 😁 So sad what's happened to this place 😢
Looking at the track on Google Earth. Track is now defunct. Should have kept Rowley Park open. Started going to Rowley Park in 1958. Yes, I'm Old. LOL
Unforttunatly I simply cannot watch this. It would be great if someone could restore this footage. I do at least know where the speedway once was,, Cnr Anzac Hwy and Morphett Rd, NW side.
I remember when they had USA v Australia and you had Minis, XU1 Toranas, Datsuns and Chevy Monzas. Also saw Johnny Rutherford in a speed car on the outside wall go from last to first.
Dudley was a very tall man driving a midget! So a little hard to get out of. And in 85 older than most. And still racing into his early 80s 20+ years later! That car had an alloy fuel tank, not a bladder tank. Phil Hereen driving again with blinkers on. And yes I was there as well
The Pines were accidents waiting to happen. Everywhere they raced. As for the rant,,, really never fenced other drivers?? Yeah right. That sedan bullshit should have had 12 month suspensions for the blatant crashing. Presenting the sport in disrepute
Russ Carlin in a Supermod, not a Sprinter. Benneches crash in the Torana killed the car.
Is Joan still going? I loved the colour pink as a kid, obviously the pink was my favourite. I'd follow that car every time dad took me. I remember meeting her behind in the pita after the race ans she used to make magnets out of can pull-rings and coloured felt weaved through. She gave me a butterfly once. I felt so star-struck for meeting her!
Joan died this year. 2023
These Aussie drivers are nuts. They run over each other.
Dumbs-ney ran into him
The algorithm sure does know me
Same 😍
Lmk once it hits your guys recommendation also 😂
A rare win for Gill Cameron in 17c. He usually ended up inverted at some point, though TBF it wasn't always his doing. Sometimes he got caught up in others accidents.
16 and 17. Search and destroy! Zeke and Vears. RIP.
They needed Billy and Graham [both RIP] against the Yanks. Bloomquist used the entire track inc entirely infield
Such a shame to see what's become of the speedway today in 2023 😢
Capitl city speedways?? Adelaide? No. Sydney? No. Brisbane? No, Canberra? No. Leaving Melbourne, Darwin and Perth with them. And Hobart has one near Hobart,
Ian Campbell should hgave been left in Victoria, the most annoying commentator ever!! RIP Mase, a genuine racer. And Trevor Knuckey still had most cylinders working at the end!!
And Tony Grove as the announcer. Search and Destroy living up to their name
I remember seeing the car on the back of a trailer at Warrnambool the following day in a big crumpled mess at Jubilee Caravan Park. I was 6 years old
