An interesting fact about these flies is that they have the fastest reaction speed in the animal kingdom. They can perceive threats in about 5 milliseconds.

We have started getting these around our house in NC. They are so beautiful. They are usually gone by this time of year (November), but this year (2024), there is one that is still hanging in there. It is dropping to below freezing at night and we'll check on her in the morning and she'll just be hanging there. She will appear dead, just dangling, but a few hours later, she'll be awake. Last night in got down into the 20s, so we'll see if she survived. She did leave a fairly large egg sac, so we'll at least get to see some of her offspring next year. Thank you for the great video.

I spent a lot of time in the woods as a kid but didn't really care to learn much at the time. Now that I'm older, I'm really starting to appreciate it. These galls are something I saw a lot as a kid and always wondered "I wonder what the heck causes that?" before forgetting 10 seconds later. I always assumed they were some kind of fungal growth.

Questions: I have shell 8" long looks to be a wood turtle maybe box turtle but she'll is more flattened out anyway when it came into my hands it was faded maybe sun bleached out anx dry I had it stored with stuff I shed roof caved in everything soaked it'd been out of wetness for about few weeks or so and seems dry I want to lacquer ( since that's what I have on hand ) but the big shell scales are loose one xamd off altogether and not as attractive with out but yij can tap on others and hear they are detached in the center will a good coat of lacquer glue this down ? Should I bake it I oven low temp to assure all moisture is out before I spray

With bones if you want to clean them off collect potato bugs or called pill bugs some roll up in a ball some are more flattened but they will clean bones better than ants

Many species of flies are actually beneficial and they outnumber the bad ones. Hoverfly for example is a favorite insect of many, as they control pest and pollinate at the same time! ( plus they are pretty). Black Soldier flies may not be a glamorous pollinator or a valiant predator but they are an excellent recycler, turning the world's food waste into useful fertilizers and protein for livestocks

I got stung on the shoulder by one on a crape myrtle tree, it was pretty bad. I've also been stung multiple times by a saddle back caterpillar, they don't feel good either.

I got stung by one as a kid climbing a tree. It got me on my pinky finger. The pain radiated up to my shoulder. And it didn't start to go away for like 4 hours. Was over 6 hours before it went away enough for me to fall asleep. After that I always watched where I put my hand while climbing trees.

Wasp and Bee sting pain stops immediately and the swelling goes down in minutes when you put vinegar on it. I've been told by 3 people vinegar kiils the pain almost immediately.
