    Speaking of german expressionism, there are parallels here to the movie Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.. where one of the antagonists is a guy dressed in black who very much looks like Mr. X but instead of not sleeping, he is a somnambulist who sleepwalks and kills in his sleep.

    • @ComicsRotYourBrain
      @ComicsRotYourBrain 5 днів тому

      There was an interesting revival/fascination with German Expressionism in early 80s. I feel it had to do with Giorgio Moroder re-scoring Fritz Lang’s Metropolis with electronic music and re-releasing the film and associated aesthetic to the then-modern audience. Tim Burton capitalized on this resurgence, owing his whole aesthetic to Cabinet of Caligari and its peers. - Chris

    Just finished listening to this as a podcast, on a long drive so thanks for livening that up. I first got into ZOT! early in the B/W run, maybe issue 14 or 15. I soon became a regular reader and collected the earlier issues that I'd missed. I've loved the comic for decades and it was a blast to hear people talking about it at length who loved it as much as I did. I thought it was really interesting and perceptive that you talked about Zot's body language in issue 8 when the door opens as almost being a fourth-wall break. Scott himself once told me at a signing that his original plan there was to actually have a fourth-wall break: instead of "This isn't funny!" Zot was going to shout "MCCLOUD!!" But apparently Kurt Busiek as script consultant pushed back on this, saying "If you take down the fourth wall at this climactic moment, you're never going to get it back up again." So props to Kurt for having this insight and also to Scott for recognizing that he was right. (At the signing, Scott put this in terms of him nearly destroying the comic, and Kurt saving it, so he did recognize what a mistake it would have been.) One small point I'm not sure you caught: in issue 7, where Zot talks about how many worlds he's been on, and the publicist who said things that weren't true - that was a callback to the very first page of issue 1, which says exactly that about "dozens of worlds, thousands of lives." Later on in the B/W run, Zot saves a city from being nuked, so he earns that "thousands" then. I hope you go on to do the B/W run! Maybe three or four issues at a time, so as not to go on all day like this one. 😄

      Hey, so glad that we were able to keep you company on that long drive, and I’m super gratified that you enjoyed hearing such an in-depth discussion of ZOT! This is actually part of our mission with CRYB! …to have these types of lengthy, freewheeling discussions about comics that were once so beloved and are just not discussed much in modern times; we believe so many of these ‘80s comics are terrific, serious-minded works that deserve to be reckoned with and remembered… in detail! Thank you for sharing that bit of inside info regarding the 4th wall-breaking moment with the the door at the edge of the universe - that’s fascinating! Good to know we were picking up on something that actually was going on there, and thank God that Kurt Busiek won that argument behind the scenes! I completely agree with him that it would’ve been a grievous error, storytelling-wise, to have Zot break the 4th wall at that moment. All of that points to the critical influence of having Busiek on board as a story consultant, which makes me even happier that we made such a big deal out of that in the episode, haha. But again, good on McCloud for having the wisdom to seek (and accept) that kind of creative counsel. I wish more brilliant storytellers could integrate that level of humility into their process. Awesome catch on what the “PR person” said being a call-back to the very first page of the series! Haha, so Zot is kinda calling McCloud his “publicist” which I suppose is also a bit 4th wall breaky, but clearly not in so distracting of a way… Man, layers upon layers contained within ZOT! And yes, we will definitely follow up with an episode (or two) on the B & W run - I’m eager to read it again and discuss it all with Chris. Thanks so much for your awesome comment! Hope you stick around and enjoy some of our other episodes… We have quite the back catalogue and it’s growing on a regular basis! - Steven

    His name reminds me of Mark Starkiller from Star Wars and his look reminds me of Dominic Fortune mixed with Dreadstar. The science-fiction character reminds me of Commander Arcturus Rann from the Micronauts and the sci-fi story reminds me of the Starjammers. This Marvel Comics comic book and super hero character just seems to be a mish mash of cherry picked cool stuff from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, mixed with various other action-adventure and fantasy animated, and live action movies and T.V. series. Lol! What I'm thinking is that Howard Chaykin must've been writing this while under the the influence of hallucinogens, lol! Grant Morrison writing the Doom Patrol in the late '80s and early 1990s would be proud. 😂

    • @ComicsRotYourBrain
      @ComicsRotYourBrain Місяць тому

      I think Chaykin did Monark before Star Wars came out (1976 as opposed to 1977), long before Dreadstar, too, and he created Dominic Fortune (around the same time, maybe a year later), so more like a lot of creators were inspired by this (himself included)! 😂 Almost every commercial scifi borrows from Trek and the Time Lord (although, I don’t know what the Dr Who US penetration rate was pre-1976). Scifi mishmash is why we love it! Star Wars is Hidden Fortress mixed with a Jodorowsky comic (Meta Barons?)🤯😂 Thanks for listening - Chris

    Zot! is a wildly under-appreciated classic series, and possibly proof that talented writers can genuinely undervalue their own work. I always got the impression that Scott is happy enough with it, but doesn't consider most of it to be that interesting. But the series is full of characters, stories, and dialog that stay with the reader permanently. Even when McCloud used a plot device which was pretty stale in the genre, he injected it with a particular edge that let it hit. And anyone within the LGBT community and read issue #33, particularly if they read it back in the era it was written, will never forget the line: "Look what they've done to you."

    • @ComicsRotYourBrain
      @ComicsRotYourBrain Місяць тому

      It’s possible that Scott undervalued Zot! because he created it so young and it was his first published work. Agree with you 💯 re: his skill at injecting freshness into tropes. Ive yet to read the final 6 or 7 so I’m curious to see the context of the line from Issue 33. Thanks for listening and your comments - Chris

      @@bluedotdinosaur Yes, I also agree - very well said! I think it’s criminal and crazy how little ZOT! is talked about. It’s an extraordinarily accomplished comic book that works on so many levels, as we gushed over in the episode. I think that McCloud’s later work on UNDERSTANDING COMICS had such a massive impact that it overshadowed what would have otherwise (justifiably) been his signature piece (ZOT!). It was ahead of its time in so many ways. - Steven

    I have a soft spot for licensed properties from the late 70s to early 90s. All of these properties were glorified commercials, but a lot of them are surprisingly good. On a lot of these properties the writers and authors treated their titles like this was their one shot to make a name for themselves and it comes through in the story quality.
