Thrift finds: 2004 Acer Travelmate 4500 laptop and Java text book

Some cool thrift store items I found today. Almost bought the laptop, but had to pass on it (no HDD or caddy). Here's the specs: Acer TravelMate 4500 series model no. ZL1 - Year: 2004 - Running Windows XP - Intel Centrino and Mobily Radeon 9700 graphics - Intel Pentium M 1.6GHz (32-bit single-core CPU) - 512 MB RAM - 80 GB HDD - Uses a 65 W power adapter What I did buy was the programming class...

      Yeah, it's hard to speak loudly in a busy thrift store... that's why I made the beginning part to explain what I found in detail. If I ever figure out how to replace the audio track, I might be able to create a vocal track for these kinds of videos, but it's hard to justify the time when I get paid $0.00 to make and upload a video like this :)

      @@CadeEdwards2013 Ive got the same issue as you man. Got a video in the pipeline that needs a vocal track but I cant find the right software to allow me to put it on the footage. Hopefully Sooner rather then later, you'll be earning from all these neat videos you make.

      @Theutmostgeek Thanks! It's really just for fun... It also helps me to learn about how to shoot videos and a little about editing them. I appreciate the encouragement and I hope you can figure out the secret to adding audio to videos so you can get your videos up.

      Yeah, I was happy to find one in good condition - this one is exceptional for sure. These laptops usually show up pretty thrashed when I find them, but every once in a while I find a winner. I love fooling around with these old notebooks and you can do quite a lot with them actually.

      It rewards copying the same things over and over... but each copy is inferior to its predecessors. Kind of like making photocopies of photocopies of photocopies... not the direction I like to see this platform moving toward. Just my personal thoughts and I'm fine if someone finds it useful - not judging, just speaking my mind :)

    • @CadeEdwards2013

      I totally agree... it seems to be an end of an era type machine - just before optical drives disappeared and batteries became built into notebooks. I was very happy to find this one since I don't usually come across these types of laptops at my local thrift stores these days. Hope your enjoying your ASUS ROG laptop - it looks kind of fun to experiment with, but I hate the sticky rubberized coating on those kinds of things. I've had success using a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and scrubbing the crap off of some mice and other items, but its a pain and a lot of work.

    Almost identical to my core 2 duo inspiron 6400's. Cosmetically it's in way better shape then my two machine's (both bought used and where not handled nicly by previous owners) Edit Oh hint for the hinges I used to fix mine. If the wiggle is becouse of loose screws take them out and use plumbers tape around the threads they'll never come loose again

    • @CadeEdwards2013

      Yeah, if the hinges get too loose I'll mess around with them, but it's a common trait of Dell laptops that I've come to accept. I have a laptop with the exact same specs (500 passmark cpu points, like yours), and I run Debian with Mate desktop environment (uses less ram) and Chrome. It works great with youtube at 480p, no lag. Another one to consider for this laptop, is Q4OS, it loads with the Trinity desktop (kde 3.5 fork), and it starts up at 350 MB of RAM, giving you ample space to use a Chromium browser with it.

    • @CadeEdwards2013
      @CadeEdwards2013 6 днів тому

      Yeah, I've used Q4OS and quite liked it before - very good for low spec machines or VMs. I have three Linux machines and a bunch of Linux VMs I use when I want to run a Linux project and quite like them all. For a machine like this, the original Windows OS is much more interesting for my hobby stuff. You see, I run older programs I find on the Internet Archive or use accessories I find thrift shopping that only run on old Windows systems. Linux is great for some stuff, but an old Windows OS like this is better for my hobby projects.

      Nope, keyboard is fine and it's pretty much in perfect condition so I really didn't have to do anything other than a OS and driver reinstall. The challenge with thrift shopping is that you never know what you'll find so you need to check frequently and then it's just random luck. This was the best ThinkPad I've come across yet, but that's also the charm of it - you never know what might show up.

    I'm performing some long needed maintenance on my dad's N5110 right now as well. it too has a 034w60 Motherboard with a Intel Core i5 2450M. I'm replacing the SATA HD that it came with it with a SSD, and I'm boosting up the RAM with an additional 4GB, for a total of 8GB. I was just thinking if the CPU was worth upgrading as well. I've seen multiple sites say that i7-2960XM will work with them if you get a higher wattage power adapter. But I see even used ones are around $50 apice. Can you or anyone recommend a less expensive (<$20) CPU upgrade? Or should I just stick with the I5-2450M? My dad doesn't do any gaming or anything. Thanks!

    • @CadeEdwards2013
      @CadeEdwards2013 Місяць тому

      I personally never have much of a problem with a CPU like this one. The graphics are usually the weakest link for this kind a system, so I can't recommend a CPU swap. If he just uses it for web surfing and productivity type things it should be fine. The SSD will give it a big boost if you are using Windows 10 as well. The other risk you might face when doing a CPU swap is the trouble of actually replacing it - there can be a lot of sticking point with this kind of upgrade. That's my two cents of advice for what it's worth - whatever way you go I hope it's a success. 👍

      @@flamestrxck That's crazy expensive! I get my mice for about $5-$10 and my keyboards for about $10-$20 at my local thrift store in Canadian dollars.

    I love the ambient background music in your video, where is it from?

      Try searching UA-cam with something like "music for sleep and relaxation" and there is a ton of this stuff. I have it playing all the time while I work and I find it quite pleasant in an office environment.

      I keep all the laptops in my videos (I'm not a reseller) and I do have better PCs for my real working life. I find these fun to use on hobby projects.

    I’m one of the very few people who won this TV series of all the episodes of this TV series beginning middle and end having every single episode 1987-1988 in American English on DVDs. John J York and Brian Thompson ( Eric Cord & Nicholas Remy ) are still alive to finish this tv series off. I mean Bill Bixby did when he was still alive he did it for the tv series of the Incredible Hulk with three tv made movies, why not Werewolf ?

      Hey EA, good to hear from you again. Yes, I totally agree - an SSD is key for real world usage of a Windows 10 PC these days. If that's what I was going to do with this one I'd definitely invest in an SSD. As a hobby system it's fine using a HDD since it doesn't make much difference for the kinds of things I use it for (running old software and connecting old hardware to it). Sounds like you've got a nice laptop there, did you get it thrift shopping?
