I lived and grew up in Rome a vibrant city in 50s & 60s Sad to see how the future has changed it as times change & Bad decisions by leaders there changing many things including Downtown Changes leading downward trend of course NYS Thruway avoiding Rome for Syracuse

Wish i was around then. Now rome is practically a ghost town. A lot of run down factories. Vacant buildings. It's sad.

I was born in Rome, but moved to Florida when I was 4, so I don't remember much about it. My great-grandpa, Val Prossner and his company poured the cement for the Griffiss AFB. My dad worked at Rome Cable. This was a good visit to see some of the history of where I was born.

Nice video Peter. My dad, Donald McIntosh, in appx 1948, founded an Optimists Club in Rome, NY. Oddly, when he was about to form the club, the charter members wanted the club to be NON ITALIAN ONLY! Yep ROME, NEW YORK!! My dad, being of Italian descent on his mother's side refused and he got his club anyway. If anyone knows about the Rome NY Optimists Club I'd love to hear from you. When are they ever going to put siding on that house? It looks awful. The un even boards make it look bad. As much publicity that this has become, one would think by now that they do something positive to secure the house and make it look better.

wish that I saw a picture of the union hotel with the embargo hotel next door on Dominick st my grandma owned the union until it was torn down and ma Bell built on the corner .dad was a Rome police officer for many years

Thank you again for some great memories of Rome when I was a child. I am 63 years old today and am still upset the city and Urban Renewal of the 7 0's decided to destroy Rome's history. Many of those historic buildings could have been saved. Jim West, Phoenix, Arizona

This brought tears to my eyes. I lived in Rome, New York as a child until I was 10 years old and the family moved out west. I have fond memories of many of the beautiful and ornate victorian buildings that gave Rome its history and character and it was all.....or most of it.....totally destroyed to the Urban Renewal wrecking ball....!!!! What a travesty! You can't tell me that many of those historic structures could have been saved and re-furbished. Great building such as Stanwix Hall and the Arlington Hotel were GRAND and beautiful and should have been saved!!! It was bad enough they tore down the great old mansions to build Fort Stanwix. They over-did it and literally destroyed the heart and soul of this city. I've been back only once or twice in 40 some years but will not return again. The Urban Renewal destruction was over-kill and I fear the city will never recover from their short-sighted decision. It's just a damn shame. Jim West, Phoenix, Arizona
