NIUE TAKALO PROJECT 2020 - PONATAKI E ATU TOA NIUE
Monu, Monu, Monu Tagaloa!
This takalo is a solutions-based project that seeks to address the common narrative of language loss and cultural disconnection for NZ born tagata Niue.
Rather than be overwhelmed by the stigma and shame of not being connected with Vagahau (language) or disconnection from knowledge of our Aga Fakamotu (culture), we take strength in our collective efforts to unite in uplifting each other and reshaping our narrative as NZ born Niue men and Toa Niue.
We are fathers, uncles, brothers and sons who are determined to not wave goodbye to cultural pillars that make us tagata Niue unique in this world.
We are grateful to our asafo, Lavea Puheke for gifting this taoga for New Zealand born Niue men to connect with their heritage language and culture. We are grateful for the leaders for recreating the maaga (village), which is often the cultural classroom where cultural exchanges occur that strengthen and maintain important relationships. We have seen that through projects and platforms that bring our people together, we achieve more, rather than being disconnected by historical tribal wars and grudges.
As Toa Niue, the time for us to make a united stand is now. If not for us, then for those who will follow us. We stand as one, on the shoulders of giants - Paul Fuemana RIP, Phil Fuemana RIP, Mark Pilisi RIP, Tigilau Ness, Che Fu Ness, Malcolm Lakatani, Shimpal Lelisi and others that have laid the foundations. Now, Diggy, Tommy, Leki, Haanz, Brandz, Lexyan, Siuni and others will carry on the torch.
Our story does not end here. Tama Niue - Stand up!
