Waterman's STNY Nature
United States
Приєднався 2 лип 2021
Waterman's STNY Nature. Nature clips primarily from the Southern Tier of New York State, with the goal of promoting nature education and environmental awareness. Clips feature regional plants and animals, Waterman preserves, nature "how that works" segments, nature presentations, updates from Waterman Conservation Education Center, etc. "One Minute Flowers" are brief video clips of some current flowering plants in the region. Pitcher Plants
Quick video (less than 1min) on the native bog-dweller Sarracenia purpurea (Norther/Purple pitcher plant). Fused leaves form a phytotelma. Nectar and coloration draw insects. Downward-facing slippery hairs make escape difficult. Plant digestive enzymes, along with bacteria, protists, and mosquito/midge larvae ( host-specific commensalism) break down a trapped/drowned insect. Example of plant coping with the nutrient-poor bog environment.

Bulblet Ferns
Переглядів 2,9 тис.Місяць тому
Bulblet ferns (Cystopteris bulbifera, bulbifera clade) are notable for their long (up to 5 feet) tapering triangular fronds, which looks like a streamer or pennant. But they are unusual for the bulblet/bulbil capabilities. When a plant is in a good place, cloning may the way to go. The sori/spores are also shown in this short video; including a video of sporangia "catapulting". (-jcs, 10/05/202...
Walking Ferns
Переглядів 2,4 тис.2 місяці тому
We were looking in limestone glens for this Walking fern, which we haven't seen in Broome County. An undivided/uncut fern that looks very un-fern-like. Its name comes from its foliar budding ("leaf-walking") vegetative propagation (cloning). The process is not subtle, as this short video shows. Images from Filmore Glen State Park, Moravia, NY. Rock Cap Polypody
Переглядів 6 тис.3 місяці тому
On making a video on Polypodium, we immediately smacked into the fickleness or inconstancy of the genus, especially P. appalachianum (P.a.) and P. virginianum (P.v.), the regional representative. P.v. seems to be the normal local fern, which is a tetraploid derivative of P.a. and P. sibiricum the range of which now much further to the north. P.a. is known for more rounded pinnae, which are wide...
Maidenhair Ferns
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 місяці тому
Maidenhair ferns (the Adiantum genus) are ferns of unusual structure. This quick video shows some of these "irregularities", without being too technical. The concept of "simple acroscopic members of segment pairs, which alternate with pinnate axes" is shown and briefly described. More information can be found in "Adiantum Viridimontanum, A New Maidenhair Fern In Eastern North America", Cathy A....
Flowering dogwood
Переглядів 4125 місяців тому
A brief look at the native flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), noting what seem to be petals are actually bracts, the often-overlooked flowers being tiny florets in the center. The bracts (modified leaves, think poinsettias) do at least what petals do, and act as a very large signal that there are rewards within. They may do other things, as well. We look at the true 4-part florets within. Now,...
A Few Big Leaves of Spring
Переглядів 635 місяців тому
False hellebore, Skunk cabbage, and Ramps. Spring comes up from the valleys, and these plants are often on flood plains and less-frequently flooded terraces by creeks and rivers. The take advantage of the sunlight of the open tree canopy before the leaves shade the ground. This short clip (1 min.) also talks about the extremely poisonous vs. the poisonous vs. the (safely) delicious. (-jcs, 5/14...
Virginia Bluebells
Переглядів 3205 місяців тому
Virginia bluebells along the Owego Creek at the Bement-Billings Farmstead (Newark Valley, NY), and along the Choconut Creek (Vestal, NY). From the first week of May, 2024. Note: narration refers to Carpenter bees, but I believe the first (good bee) is a bumble bee (Bombus perplexus?). (jcs; 5/10/24).

Great blue heron catch
Переглядів 656 місяців тому
Great blue herons are back at Brick Pond, Owego. This 1-minute clip shows their movement through the shallow pond and a successful fishing episode requiring a little patience on the part of the heron and the naturalist. (-jcs; Apr. 11, 2024)
March at Brick Pond
Переглядів 3687 місяців тому
Spring is a tough time for animals. The fall bounty is used up, and new growth has not yet produced leaves and fruit. Here are some clips from Brick Pond (Owego, NY) of some early warm activity followed by some frigid weather. Geese, ducks, and muskrat are featured in this short video. Sound was recorded on the two days shown (warm vs. frigid). -jcs Note: Mallards breeding time is spring; narra...
Painted turtles
Переглядів 1,3 тис.8 місяців тому
The turtles are back at Brick Pond or rather, they're back up, after holding their breath for the many months they've been in the mud under the ice. Brumation and dealing without oxygen are turtle adaptations. Cloacal respiration popularly referred to as "butt-breathing" is another. On a warm sunny early March day, the turtles were up and basking at the pond. Too short a video to mention much, ...
Brick Pond Lodges
Переглядів 8478 місяців тому
A comparative look at the beaver lodge and a newer small muskrat lodge. Muskrats probably are experiencing a population boom at Brick Pond; while they almost certainly live in some banks there (with attendant underwater chutes), they also are present in the small possibly work-in-progress soft lodges, made of cattails and other plant stems in a matrix of mud. Muskrat clips show the odd tail, ea...
Marcescence - when leaves remain in winter
Переглядів 3359 місяців тому
Some trees hold on to their leaves throughout the winter. A couple obvious causes not addressed in this video: the tree has died or been subject to an early killing freeze (so that the active process of abscission never starts). Some reasons marcescence may be adaptive: herbivore deterrent (protect the buds through bad taste or predator-attracting noise), allow the leaves to last as long as pos...
Needle Ice
Переглядів 49510 місяців тому
Needle ice may be present when wet soil interfaces sub-freezing air, often when rains are followed by frigid weather. Sometimes they don't grow to be visible, and instead can be heard as a crunch when walking. They also tend to entrain a lot of soil/debris from the soil/water/air layer as can be seen in the striations in these images and can move soil and rocks around in ways that suggest sorti...

Thanks for sharing and educating us!
Lovely, Thank you
Beautiful ferns! Capillaire is a common bartender’s syrup which contains dried maidenhair ferns. Apparently, the leaves are poisonous unless processed properly. I was wondering if they were used in any other food preparations.
We sometimes read about the medicinal/food uses of various plants but don’t have firsthand experience with that end of things (aside from the occasional ostrich fern fiddlehead). Interesting info!
Really nice to see and learn
another great, informative video. It's a new plant for me. thanks,
You had me at "little baseballs"! Loved it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for beautiful video work and great education. What can we do to retrain those "Cheaters"?
Why are they called Virginia bluebells?
I tried planting Turk's Cap & Philadeliphia Red recently & just found a plant growing that has to be one of them. I'm just hoping there's more than one out there.
I was struck by the patience of the heron in catching a fish related to the patience in the photographer capturing the heron. 😀
These plant profiles are fantastic! I really appreciated the explanations of the scientific names.
Thank you for these insights into the natural world. So much to discover!
A great video, thanks for sharing!
This is wonderful. Thank you so much. I'm sharing with my family in Florida who always address their mail to me xxx E Main St., Turtle Town, Owego, NY, 13827
